IBM Training Video: PS/2 L40SX Laptop
Recently I got a box of IBM Laserdiscs, and here's the first post. This video introduces the L40SX laptop and includes an overview and teardown.
Future videos will be a mix of training videos including products, deployment info, and other randomness.
Note that these disks were pressed by Technidisc, so the quality isn't as good as it could be. The signal/noise ratio in the early part of this disk was relatively low, and some earlier disks in this series have considerable rot.

Pioneer Reference Disc - Light Years Ahead v2
Переглядів 7832 роки тому
This is a circa 1990 Pioneer demo disk - made in Japan (I think) but issued for an American audience - there was also a version with RCA branding with the same disk. This new version is made with ld-decode (almost)-rev7 from three different disks, with digital sound taken from a copy that decoded perfectly. ffmpeg was used for encoding with the relatively simple bwdif deinterlacer, upscaled to ...

(Redone version without a sudden bug-induced cutoff at the end. There's some crosstalk at the end since the disk was warped before purchase, but original source isn't of the greatest quality and I'm not sure if stacking would help that much... even if I could get more copies.) This is a 1995 LaserDisc from Pioneer's Service Department. While the S104 is probably the cheapest/simplest LD player ...

Do you have anymore Pioneer LD player service video for the CLD-D704 era?
No, I think this was the first (and likely) only one they made for LD's.
@@happycubeI see thanks. Btw I left a comment before asking about is this service video multi-audio like English on Digital channel while Japanese on Analog channel?
@@Retirednolongeractive I'll check someday but I'm pretty sure it's only in English.
22:40 The 50mv/div for the Y channel is wrong, 100mv/div is correct. So that 4.8 div on the oscilloscope corresponds to 4.8 Vpp.
Very nice! Please tell us about your equipment.
Chad, do you tune-up/re-calibrate LD players for others? I have a DVL-909, which far from a great player, I'd like to get running to its best capability. I dabble in electronics. I'm considering trying to do it myself just to learn, but I may wind up paying someone to do it. I have a small "pocket-style" digital O scope. Is that sufficient? Thanks! Btw...I'm located in Georgia, USA.
Even if it's not widened ,it's beautiful
Looks good! Will (could) you be able decode in realtime to such a level with software in the future ?
i can't believe you pulled a prank WITH THE BAIT BEING A RICKROLL
It was far cheaper to get *several* copies of the Karaoke disk than one copy of the legit LD... *sniff*. That said, someone rickrolled me with an .ldf with the actual video this April Fools :)
I recognized an identical shot from another video! Check out 17:31 in this video, with the colored string. I knew I had seen it before, in the Ikegami HL-79E demo tape. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/G-tVJTiTFzE/v-deo.html I guess they used the same footage.
Wait a minute, it's not just that! The whole end of this disc, starting at 22:37, is very similar (including the music and timing), but with some of the shots being different.
What's the first song that plays???
"All You Got To Do" by a band called Baenzaei
I can't find the song.
@@user-xg3ks8jx9s I think this song was not released except on this LD. I found the song title from an image of the back cover. The Japanese release is called "ロック・アドベンチャー 音楽と映像による冒険野郎の叙情詩", and you can find pictures of the back cover on auction sites.
1:32 "You can diagnose the mother ass'y in this position." Pioneer please behave yourself this is a service manual
Actually that *might* be useful for adjustments with a 12" GGV. If it could be turned around 180 degrees, it could certainly be used to adjust the pots on the main board at least.
Is this audio digital or analog? And are there 2 audio language in this ld?
I think one of the striking things is the dynamic range. The normal composite output from my laserdisc player is much more washed out
Whatever happened to that Earth, Wind & Fire video you posted?
(Village people voice) Ddddd mmmmm cccc aaaaa aaaaa'd.
@@happycube Holy moly, you actually replied. Didn't think I would get one since it was so long ago that you posted that video. Sad to hear that It got removed but, will there ever be a time that it'll go up again? It's been on my mind for a while now.
@@Sean-dz8qu Maybe somewhere else, someday. But probably not on YT.
what movie is that your play on your laserdisc?
It is called "Rock Adventure", and the uploader has also posted the full version
Can I get a flac of the disc?
Try to fix the dot craw
It's tricky, the way Pioneer did it sort of bakes the dot crawl in.
What year this movie is from?
1981, according to eBay.
Hi my LD not function no power
Thank you. What capture card you used?
Read the bottom of the description of Chad's video.
Thank you for the full-length recapture of the service guide. I remember I read your good comments on S104/D406/V880 that they produce a clean and sharp analog composite video output as they employ digital TBC as well as skipping further video noise reduction. Also the composite video does not pass through the additional lossy S-video Y/C separation and recombination as what D50X/D60x (X=3,4,5; x=4,5,6) and DVL's do. In your opinion, do you think the picture quality of these post-1995 analog-composite-output-only LD players (CLD-S104/D390/D406/V860/V870/V880 etc) is comparable to or even exceeds 97/99/79/704/S9/X1 provided very good 3D comb filters are already built inside modern LED TV's (e.g. Sony Bravia)?
There's a low-pass filter before the composite output that introduces ringing - which is true for pretty much everything with a few exceptions like the X0. Once that's removed it'd be pretty good but the mechanism and circuit quality of the really strong players (97/S2/X0) is a lot better.
Thanks for this!!
Amazing video! Is there another part to it? I’m trying to diagnose a fault in my CLD-D704, which has stopped playing. The startup procedure at the end of the video looks super helpful, but it cuts off at the end.
It was a decoding glitch - check the service guide for the 503/703 on manuals.lddb.com (it may be mislisted as the SM itself), those often have the flowcharts. I just re-cap'd this disk with the Domesday Duplicator, so I'll update/repost this sooner or later.
Are you saying you didn't use an external 3D comb filter here? This is done via AVISynth. If so please leave the script.
Wow! The quality is mind blowing!!! It looks as if it has been ripped from a remastered BD/DVD!!! Fantastic stuff !!
Happy April Fool's Day!! 👍👍

Looks like quite a lot of disc rot.
Hi, Chad Page. My name is koyatenn and I am researching the file conversion of LaserDisc and the production of digital archives. The other day, I happened to do the same video file and up-conversion test. Please have a look if you like. ua-cam.com/video/eFgH_8G50P8/v-deo.html
Can this video help you to fix this exact unit if the disc tray doesn’t eject properly?
I have a Pioneer CLD-1730K Laser Karaoke player which shows "No Disc" especially if a disc is loaded after the unit warms up. Starting from cold is mostly ok but also shows "No Disc" sometimes. It seems the laser mechanism is trying to read the disc but not succeeding. What can the problem be?
Nice vídeo! Very good informations. I wish you could help me, Sir. I have a LCD Pioneer player CLD S201 model which can play only one LD because it's overheating in some part I unknown and technitians where I live here in northeast of Brazil prefer not to check it. If you could tell me the part of this device that causes this problem I have a friend in Japan who could help get this part. Thanks for your attention.
Thank you for this video! I just got my cold-d604 working because of this video. Thank you so much!!!!!
This is awesome! I have only one of four Pioneer LD players working now. I learned from your video the slider motor broke away on my 504 causing the E3 error. Now I better understand the basics and maybe able to work on the other broken players. I have many discs that were never released on DVD that we enjoy especially during the quarantine. Thanks for sharing this tutorial.
Absolutely great tutorial video . I subscribed your channel and wish you post more great stuff on youtube 👍🌷
hello i have my pioneer CLD S104 with problems will you fix it i live in brazil
Is this the best explanation of how compact discs work? Certainly the best one Ive come across thank you for posting. Narrator is fine sounds better at 1.25x
How do comb filters know if scan lines correlate with each other? It seems mathematically impossible to me.
Is it actually rallies in 0:20
i haver a DVL -919, what could be causing a pixellated washed out picture?
Dang it I keep forgetting that we've had 60fps since the 70s
60 Hz has been standard since the 1930s
Thanks for uploading these, it was one hell of a nostalgia trip.
Is this from UK ?
hahaha the narration is sooo bad! good content though, thanks for posting it :)
If you'd simply Widen it a little maybe we would get better quality.
It doesnt work that way mate
Amazing.
How about increasing brightness, sharpness and colour to it's Maximum?
Ever tried using a 1080p HDMI-converter?
Somebody Got any 1080i-laserdiscs?
If you haven't found him yet, I think you'll be excited to find Reely Interesting's channel: ua-cam.com/users/ReelyInteresting I must think that he has the largest collection of analog HD content on the web. (19 videos at the moment)
I'd love to see a ATSC-Conversion of all laserdiscs.
This looks awesome, better than V1. What video processor did you use?
