Hi! I'm Jason, aka The Grumpy Penguin. I'm basically an amateur mechanic, and I enjoy building and restoring cars, from classics to modern sports cars. I started my path down the carcaine addition road when I was 16 and worked at a private car museum, I was lucky enough to have the owner take me to the track and introduce me to road racing and motorsports. From there I took my own journey in motorsport, from drifting, to road race and autoX events over the last two decades.
I've recently started documenting my builds and motorsport adventures and want to be the inspiration for your next build!

Radical Prosport DRY SUMP SETUP!
In this episode, I dive into the fascinating (and slightly intimidating) world of dry sump oil systems and their maze of oil lines. Why go dry sump, you ask? Well, because it’s clever. It keeps the oil exactly where it needs to be, even when you’re pulling Gs that would make a fighter pilot jealous.
I’ll explain how it works, why it’s better for high-performance engines, and, naturally, I’ll bumble my way through some installation bits-because no project is complete without a moment of me questioning my life choices.
If you enjoy learning about engines, engineering, or just watching someone struggle with a spanner for your entertainment, then stick around. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and comment on your favorite (or least favorite) engineering marvels.

What coil over shock did you use, can you give where you purchased them and spring rate / lbs, specs? Does yours have eyelets for the top and bottom, if so what size mounting point, 3/8 or 1/2?
I’m using QA1s as dampers, DS304. The mounting sleeves are 1/2 or 5/8 (has an insert). The springs I have are far too stiff, and I haven’t found a good spec yet. But my guess it’ll be somewhere around 200# springs.
@ thank you
what is the length of the single brake line going to the back brakes? and where did you buy them.
That was a 100” hose I had custom made by Pegasus Racing. They allow you to choose ends and hose type
Glad to see you got the evil energy wrenches and that you're liking it!
Thanks man! It's a game changer.
Radial was part of radical, but they decided to drop the C and separated from the family. Great video Jason, could've used this when trying to make my first AN lines lol!
Ha! Great catch man. Thanks!
That "fuel cell" terrifies me. No bladder and right next to the driver. I'm surprised any racing organization would allow that.
According to the rule book it needs to be in a “firewall” which it will be, and is basically how radical made them. The only difference is it was a wedge behind the driver. If you are a tech inspector for the SCCA shoot me a message, would love to chat about it.
Great work man, you've got a knack for fuel systems from where I'm standing 😂 still appreciate your help on that. Great video and great editing! You're absolutely right, it should be fun..I have had so many projects lately that I just haven't enjoyed for one reason or another. Here's to 2025 being a good one!
Agreed! Let’s hope 2025 is a great year for racing! Glad I could get you s30 up and running!
Build it looking GREAT man! Good progress so far too!
I appreciate that!
7.1 lbs per hp crazy
Nice work! I'll be doing the same on the dyno this spring for my high compression U20... modified, ported, fuel injected, crank-fired and controlled by Microsquirt. Power is in the ignition timing, and a dyno is the only way to go... good luck going forward!
That’s a great setup! What are you using for FI? I always liked the Jenvey heritage DCOE setup but I know there are more cost effective ways of doing it.
@thegrumpiestpenguin Thank you! Yes, Jenvey Heritage 40mm TBs. I wanted to keep the vintage look having had everything from Mikuni to SK Racing to OER and finally Dellortos previously (owned 38 years). Because of the modifications and high compression (running on 92 pump gas) the engine required a computer to work best/safe. I love the control of EFI, but it is a steap learning curve. Then again, that's part of the fun! I need to finalize my timing map on the dyno, hopefully this spring. Love your car and I bet the power becomes addicting! Just keep her pointed straight when the boost comes on! Congratulations!
Thank you! Yeah the power is amazing, I can’t wait to turn up the boost!
Hey man, you interested in a k24 mini? I know a guy.. Man, the Datsun is so cool. Wish it'd been running and driving when I visited last summer!
I’m down! Let’s go mini
😎👍🔥
Mine weighs 2500€
What about Multiair filter?
Like the air filter? I swapped the factory one out for a K&N for a little added boooooost
great so see it running! can wait for a track day video and see it in action... hopefully real soon.🏎
Thank you! I can’t wait either haha
DUDE!! so happy to see this bad boy on the dyno! When you were backing off the trailer too it looked super mean with those big meaty tires under it! Hope to see some follow up about the next steps with this build! Keep it up!
Thanks 👍
Which screws go where when putting the cover back on? If you forgot to double check before taking off 😢
Oh no! I forget off hand but I think I figured out the first time I did that by trying the thicker screws first and if they didn’t tighten down I moved to the next one.
What spreadsheet did you use for the geometry for the 4 link?
Its unfortunate that almost no one i found near me can reset the mile service intervals, only the oil light lol
Come on down to NC; I can buy some parts for the NC Miata, and the E46, and you can make some content providing free labor; I can play a mean Doug, haha.
That ending is hilarious!! Great video overall! Car sounds good!
Haha, that is good!
Glad you liked it!
Very good video and clarification. I agree, Is a very good and funny car. See you soon. Marco from Florence Italy.
Thanks! 😃
Do you have any details on the frame modification? I am about to do the same swap
Yes! The Spriso kit comes with very detailed instructions. I would 100% recommend it. If you aren’t doing a 6 speed then the mods are minimal
@@thegrumpiestpenguin what I om really unsure about is the placement of the motormount seats. Doest the Sprisokit include this information without the use of their jig? I live in Norway. So no way renting that jig 😅
You would have to ask him about that! I just did the jig rental program since I’m in the states haha
Honestly, I'm more impressed with the trailer. Looks like a great accessory to any track day adventure.
Yes it is!
Hellllllls yes! I am super excited for this!
Looks like a Hot Wheel
Thanks!
I’d love that JAAAAGGG!
Are you available to contact offline? I cut my tunnel like yours for my Autech SR20 & 6 speed, and have some questions with what you did. LMK
Shoot me a message I’ll swap some photos with you
Very interesting on how Alfa make their money from a customer. I have a certificate in auto mechanic and also willing to learn new things. Would like to know how much the kit cost as well as software updates, thank you.
The software and cables are around $100. So pretty reasonable considering the capabilities!
Damn man! The way you just chopped into it my stomach sank lol! It looks super good though I’m excited for the final painted build! It’s going to look great! Excited for next videos!
Thanks! Have to come see it in person soon
This is actually a really good idea IN GENERAL. I think people’s lack of organization in life, finances, car projects can really put a damper on life long progression! Nice covering a topic like this!
Thank you! I couldn’t agree more!
Thank you so much for discussing this topic! I’m yet to start my project and Ive been dying to try hear how different people plan their builds to try and make them easier and save time and money. I also intend on creating a document like an owners manual with all the details on parts used and manufacturers numbers etc to make servicing and maintenance in the future much easier. What sort of HVAC unit was shown in the photo? I’m looking to do AC as well, so always trying to get info on different option to fit in our tiny cars. Again, this topic may not be so exciting or sexy (or get the views) but it is sooo important! Thank you x 100000
You’re welcome! I’m glad it helps. That HVAC unit was actually not from my build, I’ve chosen to omit any HVAC as it’s a track car, but let me see if I can talk to that owner and see what it was!
Where do you get the torque values for Giulia? I mean not only for the engine oil but but other nuts and bolts too. I haven’t seen it in the manual.
The website I was using as a reference seems to now be shut down. I’ll post another source if I find it.
skin a cat? Where, sir, is your cat? nice work, even if the chop-chop hurt to watch.
Not to worry! Steve-Dave the shop cat is 100% safe
That's a relief! @@thegrumpiestpenguin
For snow you need to ditch those wheels and go for at least 255 70 16s or 285 65 16s and go for a proper snow tyre seeing as that’s what you want it for. You need the talker tyres on 16” rims so that you can air down. These two tyre sizes will keep you speedometer accurate rather than if you go bigger. Ideally you want a mild lift to avoid bellying out in snow say 2-3” don’t go much more than that or you’ll use the good on road manners it currently has. I would also add at least one axle diff lock. I assume this has the centre diff lock? That’s about all you need really unless you’re going in for serious off roading, but then you lose some comfort and handling plus poorer fuel economy. So keep it mild and you’ll love it, go too far and you’ll regret it if you want a daily driver. I have a 2004 7 seater TD5 and do a 160 mile round trip twice a week so have kept mine only just above standard and it drives beautifully on the motorway and is pretty good for mild off roading and excellent in snow. It is the perfect all round car for loading up with kids and going camping or comfortably devouring miles on the motorway (freeway to you) I love it! Hope you enjoys yours as much as I do mine.😊
Thanks! Yeah we only get about 1” of snow a year it seems haha. So no worries there.
What if my Alfa doesn’t have adaptive suspension button but new selector has it?
That’s no big deal, pressing the button won’t do anything! The selector should still work just fine once programmed
Funny the rest of the world doesnt buy american cars .because they are laughable junk.😂😂😂
Awesome! Did you had any issue with the pedal response? (I heard that the pedals may stay in default curve)
I did not! I’ve also heard that, but didn’t have any issues. I think the MY2017 might be the sweet spot to mod these
Very good to hear, thanks! I will investigate a little more just to make sure. Good job!
Dang man that looks so clean! The hard lines are really cool and look good under the hood! I would say no way this thing won’t stop insanely well….but with the possible power to weight ratio it may just literally fly away! Excited to see the end!
Thanks buddy!
I see you are trying to expand your audience by catering to the viral cat crowd... not sure they have the attention span for the rest of the video!
Probably not! Why I left it at the beginning of the video haha
my thoughts exactly! captions were good!@@thegrumpiestpenguin

Thumbs up for shop cat.
Yeah he’s great!
You have to feed the algorithm.. it loves cats!
Awesome car and a cute cat! 🐱 Thanks for the information and inspiration. I’m keen to see any part of the project you film.
Thank you!
Love this car, man! Such a rad project, coming together so nicely. Ah the ole shop pet judgement, I feel that when James walks around the driveway while I work 😂
Sooo much silent judgement
Looks like you've whacked a shaft or two before. Good to see some progress!
Ha! Yes the car is moving along behind the scenes as well. With the busy holiday season I’ve had to trade editing time for garage time
Happy holidays!@@thegrumpiestpenguin
total insanity in every way, strongly considered the Alfa until seeing the catastrophic maintenance requirements, difficultly and cost. No wonder this company is nearly bankrupt
It’s really not that bad? It’s a little specific in some ways, but my friends 2019 ford fusion was honestly worse to do oil changes on. I think most modern cars utilize under trays. As for cost, the oil and filter are no cheaper then other cars. It uses rear brakes quickly, but they aren’t terrible for expense.
Shit sounds sweet.
Thanks! It’s one of the best sounding cars I’ve heard in stock form!
Geil 👍😎
