I’ll have to try this out next time my kids won’t play with me. I made up my own solo play where I play all 4 kingdoms at once, tiles are determined by rolling my meeple and ordering them based on how close or far from me they land. Then they just take the tiles in that order. I must build all 4 kingdoms as full 5x5 with no gaps and the castles at the center of each. Theoretically I’d score the game based on the standard scoring rules, but if neighboring kingdoms happen to connect their tile type across boarders their tiles can be counted together. I say “theoretically” because the occasions I’ve had the time to play to the end, each and every time at least one tile in the final round will not fit. My last time attempting to play like this the green and blue kingdoms each ended up with a double tile they couldn’t use, but had their tiles been reversed I would have won.😢

Where in the giga rules does it refer to the owner getting a credit if someone places next to his special tile? Thanks

I've been playing the Princess Dorothy variant for years and I love it, but I like the look of this with its simplicity. I look forward to trying it.

i like game mechanic where you get some resources by placing tile adjacent to the resources rewarding tile, BUT ! i think its a flaw making that tile playable by players, and this is why during the game of terraforming mars sometimes one player push his strategy to achieve a lot of mc production and plus find another way to get a lot of mc like selling steel or plant for 7 mc, while other player focused his strategy on his plant production, drawing a lot of cards and he is lets say broke and will stay broke for few more generations and lets say this other player who focused on the plants drew card which allows placing special tile, and he needs so bad to play that special tile to gain just one more plant or two so he can advance in mc a little bit because he is so broke so that special tile is so useful to him BUT he cant play it because the other player with a lot of mc will build a kingdom of tiles around his tile and use that tile he placed completely in his benefits so the point is, by placing rewarding resources on special tile you made that card unplayable in many cases because it will make you more harm than good so the solution for this is that those rewarding tiles should be neutral, at least that is how i made it in my custom terraforming mars game i added radiation, anomalies and pressure to be dealt with like with oxygen and temperature i added mars rovers for picking up special bonuses on the mars and cleaning radiation, mars construction robots for building factories and mars banshee for hunting anomalies on the mars and those anomalies grants you varies of things like resources when playing next to it or they produce some negative effects while on the map, when dealt with anomaly, mars banshee anomaly hunters scale for anomalies goes down one level and you collect this time bigger reward for clearing that anomaly from the board, anomalies can be placed anywhere and not interfere with other tiles, you just put anomaly always on the top of everything that it is on that tile anomaly terrorising or bringing joy for example some anomalies doesnt let you build factories or cities near them 2 spaces away and good anomalies gives you free scans when you play tiles 3 spaces away from it what are scans? thats another story :)

i added a lot of things from other games in my version of terraforming mars just like in assassins creed brotherhood when you send your members to go and do some missions, i inserted ships in TM which you can send to complete missions and if successful you earn rewards will ships be successful depends on the upgrades you developed on the ships, this mechanic i inserted from the well known board game eclipse then from mass effect two i added scanning of the planets, through scanning you can discover a lot of materials and stuff, every player gets two scans for free every generation, you get extra scans by developing things also added few more planets which you can scan and you develop things by placing 3 classes of scientists on the blank spots which mechanics i took from board game on mars also added astronauts from asteroid mining and stuff like that workers for factories, scrap metal and other stuff you can process through factories to get steel, titanium and other stuff astronauts and scientists you earn by completing missions with your ships, or by scanning planets, they are very valuable you can also get military strength to conquer some well defended planets without war and collect reward, this mechanics i added from the legendary hit called race for the galaxy also added these scales: pressure, dust storms, radiation, anomalies (there is anomaly hunt science facility which hunts anomalies on mars and you need to reduce the scale) on some other planets you can place river tiles and smaller cities if you discover them in the pile you draw with scan of that planet also every planet has few VP scoring tiles and required materials on those tiles you need to gather through scanning, if you find those materials you can trade and earn points and scientists, this mechanic i added from the game called finca also anomalies spawn randomly every turn like monsters in board game witcher thats about it so far, i really upgraded this game to be big and complex

Can this Ares expansion be played as part of a solo Terraforming Mars Game? I just set up the board as a 2-3 players game and plan to play it solitaire tomorrow. Or is that not a good idea?

Really appreciate this kind of content. Some of the fan-known stuff deserve more recognition. Also VERY good rule explanation, short & to the point. One thing: use something with the same color for the background, instead of cloth with patterns.
