Welcome to M J B Engineering's UA-cam channel!
We are based in Essex/London - although we travel all over the UK undertaking onsite welding & engineering challenges.
Hopefully my UA-cam channel will provide some insight into what we do and some useful tips on welding, fabrication & engineering.
We generally serve the aggregate & cement industry. We regularly carry out shaft repairs and cast iron repairs.
These videos and content are intended for entertainment purposes only, by no means take any of my comments or opinions as gospel they are simply my own. Do not try this at home. Spiral Mixer Repairs - Mechanical Engineering, Machining & Welding
Переглядів 46914 днів тому
Over the past two weeks we have carried out a number of repairs to two separate spiral mixers from one of our bakery customers. The first is a 60L Italinox spiral mixer. 230v Single Phase. The bowl had developed a serious wobble which we thought could be the bearings but turned out to be a snapped weld on the shaft. The second is GAM 60L spiral mixer. 400v Three Phase. The bowl on this mixer wa...

Harrison 140 Lathe Upgrades - Bigger Pulley, New Belts & Clutch Rattle Investigation
I’ve just got 1 of these as my 1st lathe. Can’t see the reverse switch on mine though. I need to find an instruction manual somewhere
runs nice and smooth
Terrific. Looks better than a new one now. Wouldn't have thought I'd spend lunch time on a Monday watching a mixer get fettled but it was entertaining. Subbed
Great repair. I enjoyed watching the process. How many hours have gone into the repairs? I guess I now know why some people just replace the machine. Hopefully, the machine lasts a lot longer now with the repairs and upgrades.
@@Jan_Raap Oh blimey a good day in it in total i would say Jan. This machine can be bought for about £1500 when it's on offer from one of the box shifting catering suppliers like Adexa or Nisbets. It does almost make it an uneconomical repair, however a small bakery such as this one can see the sense in repairing at ⅓ of the cost of buying new. And also, it's much better for the environment.
Do you need to drain the gearbox oil first? Or are people just idiots?
@@gatto789 The oil had already leaked out of my gearbox so no need to drain.
@@gatto789 you wouldn't loose much pulling the driveshaft out without draining the oil, half a litre or so I reckon.

Good video. I need a 2 speed timer for one of these mixers multi pole motor do you know to any
@@stuartmorris4694 Almost impossible to get original mechanical replacements now stuart i'm afraid. What's the machine? Best alternative is a pair of Finder or Schneider timers but your machine will need rewiring most likely.
impeccable job! i enjoyed the video
Nicely done 👍👍👍
Good job 👍👍👍
Nice save! Phil
Feedback ??
What was the reason you jacked up the control arm ?
i think i've got the jack on the subframe just as extra support. I don't trust the Halfords axle stands 😂
what a waste of time , will never last
Still in daily use three years later. Seeing the customer tomorrow as it goes, i'll grab a video for you 😂
Hello, interesting probing mechanism, can you please share and explain how it's work?
Unusual to see someone with bare hands in a workshop today. Everyone seems to be wearing gloves. I didn't see you align the top and bottom pulleys with a long straight edge to minimize belt/pulley wear. Maybe something to consider with soft metal pulleys like aluminum. I'm hoping to start a refurb on a similar model pretty soon. I've spent years looking for a Harrison as it was the model I was taught on in school metalwork classes 60 years ago. Happy days!
@@johnj4860 I think it may be in another video but i done exactly what you've suggested and aligned the pulleys with a 1m steel rule
2 pole synchronous motors run approx 2900 rpm. 4 pole motors 1450.
Sending a motor out to have it meggered is intriguing. A used megger from eBay would save you money in the long run.
@@johnj4860 I have a insulation tester it's in my other videos - a customer of mine is a motor rewinders so there was no cost to having it checked.
Oh for the joys of taperlock pulleys and bushes. 😀🖖
Good jobs, guys. Nice machines there.
I done before used nicel cr
Brilliant stuff! Good to know that these skills still live in the UK Cheers, JJ
A good mix of jobs in this video. Watched it from start to finish while I was having my lunch break. You got me motivated enough to go back out and do some more work now. 👍
Mine has the same problem too!!!

Some big machines in that shop. Thanks for sharing.
My issue is a magnetic starter that got wet ?

Cool piece of kit. Logical presentation of issues - the usual "simple job" becoming a bit of a pita ! Thanks, enjoy your videos. JJ
I used to do machining and welding about 3 years ago. I do inspection now, but I miss the days of doing this stuff. Thanks!
Lovely man
It's a bit of a pain needing to bore Solid Bar to such a large size. But for a couple of Bushes it's not too bad. Thankfully my most of my suppliers are only 15 to 20 minutes away. I can usually sneak in and find a few offcuts to get things moving 👍
Do you use reverse cut?
Just a small correction to add to your post. Fronius has a jobmaster welding torch for at least 25 years!!
@@larseniaqi8702 Not with a digital screen they did not.
Thanks for that 👌👌
keep up the good work
thanks for sharing. keep up the good work.
125 Pounds ??? That crazy expensive. At those prices I would be sticking with a Metal File and Emery Paper. I'm assuming you must have a particular use in mind for your latest investment 🤔
Yes specific task to complete. Emery tape on lath is not allowed at this place.
The world and me turns on a Colchester but still miss my DSG
Love this video. Making simple parts to fix a machine. I learnt a few things from your video. Thanks for posting.
Great work! Interesting to see the process. I have only tried to repair a motor shaft once before but it was unsuccessful. I was still very green at operating a lathe when I had a go. The soft jaws seem to work very well!
Very nice work sir. Some precision work there
You do some interesting stuff
You did a good job giving a new life. Will this be sold or is it going back to a customer 🤔
@@weldmachine Back to customer. Some more bits to do onsite yet i've just not had a chance
I'm guilty as well of lifting Lathe Chucks, knowing I shouldn't 😬 The Chuck lifting attachment you made will make a huge difference to working smart, not hard 👍
I'm gonna make a Mk2 version, that has a tube that rotates in order to make lining up witness marks and then tightening the cams easier. But yes my back is a lot better this week! 😂
It's not easy to find work where you become The Guy that can get it done. But it's good when it can happen especially for jobs like the Roots Blowers. Nice straightforward work that can be easily sent to you 👍
Using Soft Jaws is definitely the way to go. Nice work man👍
Pat? Lovely Pissed Off Postman Pat? I knew he has class, Matchless are cool bikes. Tell him I said "Hi", Good job, Mate
Very nice work sir.
Interesting video. We do similar work but on ammonia compressor screws. We normally shrink on sleeves where the mechanical packing runs. My boss doesn’t like metal spray shaft repair so we use a metal epoxy product called Belzona 1111 to repair all of our bearing fits. We do a lot of repair on large electric motor end bells using cast iron sleeves but we use an interference fit of .001 per inch and shrink them in using liquid nitrogen. Cheers
@@pvtimberfaller yes i know the belzona product, not sure Id trust it for a bearing seat. Do you machine it or use a former? Metal spray can be hit and miss if done incorrectly. I would have liked more of an interference fit but no liquid nitrogen here and it needed to be able to tap into the bore whilst still setup in the mill. Won't move with the loctite 638, unbelievably strong.
We freeze the sleeves in with the end bell still in the machine, the only drawback is you have to wait until it come up to room temp to finish machining. We machine the Belzona. Just mask the area with black electrical tape.
@@pvtimberfaller Interesting, i've drilled and tapped belzona but never machined it. Sod's law i'm actually having trouble with the metal spray on some small shafts, god knows why. I've got to try some other powder. Thought i had rectified the powder feed issues the other day and then bam did it again.
Just ordered a set 👍🏻
@@gingermiller9886 i can't believe they're actually available at a very reasonable price! Cheaper than buying a diamond wheel and attempting to grind your own
Good job looking forward to the hbm working
