    I literally had to pause this video at the 4:00 min mark, because I am completely baffled. this podcast, this whatever, the artist you are abt to continue to portray, has me fucking internally screaming. what in the fuck??? the best I could say is, "thank you for doing what you have." more comments and more eyes are needed to help this grow. art is everywhere, but great artists are few and far between. again, thank you ( ).

    re: the Tenderness part of the quote, (and hearing of Ty's experience when older artist were unwilling to help), reminded me of a Lou lyric I think about a lot when making my work; "Anyone who's ever had a heart, wouldn't turn around and break it." (Sweet Jane)

    I love the conversation around the 25 min mark where you guys talk about re-using work that is overdone by painting on the back or painting over it or cutting it up and using it for another piece. I totally agree! I agree that you may have ruined the particular iteration of a work but it still has a future. We still have the opportunity to experience artistic redemption by using broken work for future masterpieces. Blessings guys. Great discussion as always 👍

    Reminded me of something i once heard a gallery owner say, 'Dali is the most loved Surrealist because he was one of the last "Masters", he truly understood the rules of line and perspective and distorted perfectly within that rigidity.' (Shout out to you guys from Steel City, UK)

    Who are you & where did you come from??? So happy that the algorithm sent you my way! I’m a new artist who’s still working on my style, but I know that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, if I can let go of the fear & internal judgement and just FLOW!! But I’ve got a leg up because I’ve quit my job, so I have a lot of time on my hands. Just need to hunker down & commit that time to creating. Glad I’ll be able to listen to your channel as I do so. Glad to have new creative friends (even if only online, lol).

      I hear what you're saying, but I personally disagree. Don't keep it short. I want to hear the chit chat and the real organic conversation surrounding the questions. I don't like listening to clean-cut reporter style content. I like these Ling conversations that aren't edited down. Just my personal opinion.

    Guys! You nailed it again!! You can't imagine how much you've helped me. Sometimes it's like we get stuck and we just can't move... stuck with our limiting beliefs, stuck with fear, stuck in solitude ... like a circular conversation... Stuck!! So, I started to get unstuck by rearranging my studio. I'm making way for the creativity to flow... and yes! I will follow your advice on communicate more and get out there! I talk on instagram with a lot of artists but none of them are portuguese, all from different parts of the world. Also, the part where you talk about "style" was important for me because I do not have a style. I need to let art take me a go for the search of the unknown. That's the spirit! Thank you so much for answering my questions! You made my day! Take care! Can't wait for the second part!

    Thank you both. I loved your answers to the question about what to draw on if you haven’t had major trauma in your life. It’s so true that the world needs beauty and good things to aspire to and be inspired by. Even a single flower in a cup can be beautiful, or shadows cast by chairs or branches, or subtle colours and shapes artfully arranged, or the curve of a bowl, or the texture of clay. All these things give pleasure to the eye and lift the spirits and all present the artist with challenges and problems to be solved. That’s the never ending wonder of making art.

    Thank you both for all you've shared. I feel enriched. I've recently realized through life and the spiritual practice I've been following recently that pain and suffering can sometimes restore me. Not that I welcome it. In fact I often say to my Source, "Remember, I do NOT want to be a martyr, I'm NOT martyr material, NOT interested!!" But sometimes it's like going through the fire and coming out renewed in some way. It's like the Leonard Cohen song, where the refrain goes Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in. Thanks again guys! Take care.

    Nice job on the podcast. Patience, Courage and Honesty. Patience has a lot to do with just digging in and suspending judgement. Like I say from experience, 'patience is a virtue that can only be developed once you have run out of it'. Things take time and when you are at the beginning the view ahead looks daunting so don't look ahead, give yourself permission to take refuge in the present. That's where the courage come in - to keep going without knowing if you have the staying power to see it though and not enough trail behind you to see where you have been. It all looks so clumsy because you are poking around in the dark. But that means you are about to discover something. This is where the honesty comes in but honesty in this case means following your inner promptings and feeling out the subtle rightness or wrongness of things and of your responses. "No that's wrong, no that doesn't feel right, oops wait, I think that feels better, oh, I like that. what makes that feel right?" You have to spend the many, many hours it takes. You have to reach self abandon or selflessness where you are not there while your working like the great quote from John Cage "When you start working, everybody is in your studio- the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas- all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you are lucky, even you leave." John Cage You have to make, and make, and make. This is the only way that you can get to a critical mass of micro decisions. You 'voice' emerges from the thousands and tens of thousands of tiny decisions, tiny lessons learned, tiny problems solved, tiny choices made, tiny revelations and insights that culminate in revealing exactly 'you' over time. With enough practice only 'you' can emerge in the end even if you start out as a disciple of someone else. Without those endless hours in the trenches you can't get to the accumulation of the ten thousand little gems that will make you who you will become. So be patient, take the time, have courage, and listen to your inner truth, your intuitive knowingness which is your self honesty. Trying to rush it slows you down.

    • @JustMakeArtPodcast
      @JustMakeArtPodcast 2 місяці тому

      yes yes yes to everything! I believe I use that John Cage quote in one of the episodes somewhere, I also use it regularly in my mentorship program, it is one of my favorites because that is exactly how I operate every day! @@JustMakeArtPodcast I am also a big fan of Robert Motherwell's work and it is my personal view that there is a correlation in the work of both these artists, in the sense that they invoke similar feelings in me when I view them. This is my personal opinion and I was pleasantly surprised when I recently saw that Clyfford Still's evocative 1951-T no.3 hangs adjacent to Robert Motherwell's huge Elegy to the Spanish Republic, 108 1965-1967 on a corner wall in MOMA's permanent collection of paintings, an affirmation in some sense that the curator thought so too. I am not sure Clyfford would agree however.

      I should qualify that it does not hang there permanently, but it featured in an installation view of the exhibition "Selections from the Permanent Collection of Painting and Sculpture" in 1993.

    Just found you guys. Cool podcast and now added to my list of good listens while working. And I can completely relate to the love/hate relationship with deadlines. Being free to create as you wish is great however having an actual deadline forces the mind and body to be in the "uncomfort" zone which is where some of the greatest growth occurs. Thanks

    Great episode! Did not realize I could see you here in UA-cam. It's so amazing to understand your steps until the present time and even relate to some of your emotions or feelings because sometimes we are convinced we are the only ones, specially on matters of not making it in our art life. Loved Nathan's description about how he felt on his first exhibition because I relate a lot to what he felt. When I started to paint in 2020 I decided to have a goal that was making one solo exhibition every year. That would push me to work really hard. Since then I did 3 and every time it happens when I look at my paintings hanging for everyone to see... man I tell you... it's really overwhelming and I feel so proud of myself. Of course that I did these events with "a little help from my friends" by lending me venue space. As you talked about, the key is to work hard every single day because it's the only way we can move forward in our process. I love coming to the studio and stay here with my "studio directors" and since I have 4, they never come to an agreement! :). This is my safe place. Also you talked about the boomerang effect and that's vey true. What we cast we get it back and I've worked so hard these 4 years but 2 weeks ago I got 2 likes from Jerry Saltz on 2 posts about 3 paintings! What about that guys? I almost had a heart attack! These little victories... Ty, I sincerely hope I can one day do mentorship with you. It's on the top of my bucket list. For now I wish you guys the best of the best and please keep on bringing these amazing conversations that ignite all artists lives with hope, determination and self trust. Thank you!!
