Tilt Antenna Mast
Building your own stand-alone ham radio antenna mast can be a fun and exciting project - especially when you get to do it over and over again. In this video we share with you our trials and tribulations of building different antenna masts to hold up a horizontal trapped dipole that we use with our Icom 7300.

What are Radio Waves?
Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 роки тому
Conceptualizing radio waves can be tricky for a lot of reasons. In this video, we explore the essence of what a radio wave is. We did not attempt to address the nuanced differences between various models of physics as this isn't a comparative analysis. Consequently, there are some details which will be saved for another time. In future videos, we will explore the math and science of how radio w...
Icom IC-7300 Settings for SSB Voice
Переглядів 93 тис.3 роки тому
Nothing terribly significant here for those that have been using this rig for a while, but it may be helpful for some new owners. This is a quick rundown of the voice (SSB) settings that I use to get on the air with the Icom IC-7300. I'm not attempting to teach you how to use the radio, or even set up the radio's physical connections; This is mostly about getting on the air with settings that w...
New Icom Time Adjustment Software - Check it out!!!
Переглядів 17 тис.3 роки тому
ICOM just (11/30/21) came out with a new piece of software. Now you can sync your radio's clock using a Windows or Android operating system. The manual states that this works for the Icom 705, 7100, 7300, 7600, 7610, 7850/51, and 9700. The ability to do this has existed through independently created scripts however, this is the first rollout from ICOM. This is version 1 of ST-4003W. *NOTE: In o...
Building a 2 meter Dipole Antenna (from a broom)
Переглядів 15 тис.3 роки тому
We built a 2m dipole antenna out of a broom handle, pvc and some other small pieces that we had laying around the house. Ham radio is such a wonderful hobby in part because simple builds like this are possible. No need for complicated and expensive builds... unless you want to! This amateur radio antenna's SWR turned out to be between 1.2 and 1.5 across the whole band, so not too bad.
Intro to Coax Cable Feedlines for Ham Radio
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
In this video we explore the basics of coax feedlines for beginners. Starting with the anatomy of a cable, we break down each component and briefly touch on their composition and purpose. Please note: I know that I use some oversimplifications - this isn't meant to be a comprehensive analysis, rather a quick start for someone new to the hobby. In a future video I'll give my recommendations of f...
Our First SOTA Activation - Baker Mountain
Переглядів 4693 роки тому
Our very first SOTA activation was at the summit of Baker Mountain in Saranac Lake, NY. As a part of the Adirondacks, Baker is not one of the taller mountains, but it is one of the steepest ascents for new hikers. KC3RPH, KC3RPJ, and AC3DS took on the challenge and made some surprisingly distant contacts for only operating on 5 watts.

Getting the Icom 7300 into the field is made easy when you have a nice travel case for it. Here we show the step-by-step process of turning a normal pick-and-pull foam case into the perfect road ready storage solution. We refined the box in these steps: 1. Pluck the pick-and-pull 2. Bonded the foam layers with contact cement 3. Sealed and hardened the foam layers using spray plastidip 4. Adhere...

Love that you and your son are working together. There is no better way to learn or to bond. That Alpha-Delta center section is a great choice. Thanks for the confirmation that dog fence wire does so well. I've considered it for experimenting as well because it's so inexpensive.

Thanks for the video. The manufacturer of my 12.8v lifepo4 battery suggests charging it at 14.4v but the balance charger only outputs about 13.6v. Is that ok for.the battery, will it fully charge?

That's a great linear supply, but the output generates a bit of common mode noise, especially at lower frequencies. I made a video demonstrating it, and showing a few ways to mitigate that noise: ua-cam.com/video/lQQHlbOMOuw/v-deo.html

I did find a perfect case including 32 Ah LiFePOs. It't a tight fit and nothing for longer walks. I thought about going out with two separate boxes or maybe a backpack with the same size. Walking with this heavy case is no fun and should be less than 1 km better less than 500 m.

Thanks for the useful video Drew. I hoped you were going to mention running costs, am I right in thinking that a linear power supply uses more power? I have both types and prefer the linear for its quietness. If you have a power supply with a fan and a rig with a fan, the audio noise in the shack rises.

To use this device as a balancer on LiFEPO4, wouldn't multiple wires need to be connected to each battery? Since you only need 2 wires (since you're not using the balance feature), I'd rather use a simple DC_DC converter with current and voltage adjustment than spend that much money on it.

What coax would you recommend for jumpers inside the snack to hook up radios etc. for GMRS frequencies (462-467 MHz)? I am talking 5-8 feet at most. The rest of the antenna lead is 400Max (18 ft) but that is too stiff to do what I want.

As a longtime IC-7300 user my main gripe was the noisy fan. It drove me nuts until I ripped it out and replaced it with an extremely quiet NOCTUA fan. It's a common mod now. The clock backup battery is a joke. I replaced that with a pair of supercapacitors. I'm told sales of the IC-7300 have exceeded 100,000, so Icom must have done something right.
