Great series. I have spent 32 years with almostly daily Net, "Rag Chewing", and serious SOLP contesting, primarily on 40 meter SSB, and find that a SLOW (as opposed to fast ) AGC receiver setting enhances receiver quality, and ability to hear what is being transmitted. This is especially true during increased QRN, typically occurring during the summertime months here in the U.S. This is however, my first SDR rig, so I am open to learning more regarding this topic. 73, N7MZW. Cheyenne, Wyoming.
When you use the tune function or check the SWR the radio defaults to a low power CW signal. That is why you don't find a difference between RTTY and SSB when you tune. You also don't have to reduce power because the radio does it anyway. Great videoand very helpful for people that are new to the hobby.
Very nice presentation :-) And timely for me. I bought a new 7300 about a year ago and have never opened the box. My sis passed away about the time the rig came and I just abandoned ham radio. I'm feeling the urge again so will be unboxing my 7300 soon and will use this video to help me start from scratch.
I’m sorry to hear about your sister and glad that you gave life the time needed. Hobbies can wait. As you get started and think of anything that might be good for some explanation, please let me know. I’m happy to help. Best wishes to you as you begin this new journey. 73 - AC3DS

Great video. I've had my 7300 for a couple years, and have only been licensed for about 6 years. Love this rig, with a mini G5RV run around my HOA controlled back yard. I just got my DXCC using FT8, and now am working on renewing my 50 year old CW skillz. Will keep watching your videos! 73
Go into the 7300 and select the Tuner Function in the menu and set it to Emergency and don't use more than 50 watts... It will allow you to tune your G5RV on 30 and 18 meters and 12 meters. Enjoy
Hooray! Just passed my General and so unboxed my 7300 today. I have watched a number of videos on getting started with it, and this was by far the most helpful Thanks!
Congratulations! That is great news - welcome to HF! If you start to feel a bit overwhelmed (or underwhelmed) by the radio, just keep making contacts and doing the things you've thought about doing. What you may find is that the versatility of the 7300 makes most of us very happy over time. I hope to hear you on the air sometime soon. 73 - AC3DS
My 7300 is back ordered but will be here by the end of the month. The first thing I shall do is use these settings you suggest. Than you, Drew👍🏻……….Don, AC4OK
Check the SWR with the tuner off to get actual antenna readings. With tuner off you will se a difference between SSB (no power because of no modulation) an RTTY (full power)
Brand new to HF, just got an ICOM 7410 yesterday. Am I supposed to leave the tuner on while transmitting? Because when I take it off, the SWR goes to 3 to 1.
This was great as usual. The only suggestion I have is with regard to ALC, Mic Gain and Compression. It would good to show the viewers how to properly set ALC at somewhere between 30-50% and then set compression so that ALC doesn't cut back on the transmit power.
I bought and programmed a Yaesu FT-60 about 2 years ago. Been listening on and off but more here recently. Planning on getting my Technician license next month and just purchased a 7300 today. Will be using your videos to help me get started.

Thanks for the video. I have a technician license and I am working towards my general. (at a somewhat glacierly pace) Been doing some on my part of the 10 meter band when I can. I like your videos and the way you explain things. The ones on the NanoVNA really helped me use it to fix an SWR issue I had. Some day I'm gonna move up and use my 7300 to its potential.
It sounds like you are making the most of your Tech license. The 10 meter band can give some great experiences, and the 7300 will be there for you whenever you decide (or have the time) to work to the upgrade. Several things you forgot to mention, for example, you advice to set the mic gain between 50 and 70, wrong, you should say that has to be set looking at the ALC meter when talking normally and then move the mic gain from 50 down until ALC be three quarters or less of the red bar below, most of the times is below 50%, the 7300 has a lot of gain. Mine is set at just 20%. Something else, leave the TX EQ on zero for bass and treble will leave this radio with lower intelegibility, you have to explain how to get a better TX audio. Also, compressor level should be set by % but by reading compression level read on the meter not to have over 10db compression, otherwise TX audio will be saturated.
OK when I first got my 7300 (about 8 months ago) it worked great on both voice and ft8 and I never had to change anything in the menu when I went from voice to fT8. Now for some reason (Opperator Error I guess) every time I switch I have to refer to the Data Mode settings and switch from USB to Mic or it won't transmit. What did I do wrong?
On my 7300, power set at 100%, modulation set at 50 % I can put out 100% power on RTTY, or FM. When i switch to SSB the most power the radio will put out is 50%. Do you know of any internal setting that will allow the radio to put out a full 100% power on SSB ? Turning modulation up to 100% does not seem to help.
@@Upnorthguy2024 This is because when you transmit on SSB there is no carrier and your voice doesn't hold peak power when you talk. The modulation envelope shows the average power - usually around 50% of the maximum. If you looked at momentary peak power, you may see the 100w peak hit (.eg, a quick burst of sound like a whistle will briefly show peak). When I used to sell ham radio gear, I had this come up all the time. The phone rings at the shop, "Help! my radio will only produce 40-50 watts output" . No dude, it's fine, it's just showing you that it's doing 100W PEAK but averaging lower. A mode like CW or RTTY will show lots of peaks. BTW, you can buy an external power meter that is capable of showing peak power, but not really needed for most hams.
