Well done. Great short with interesting content, needed visuals, and engaging pacing.
Could some of those principles not be applied to digital photography? Obviously not the film part, but experimental, imperfect equipment and the like. I've started moving away from "optical perfection" and into weird stuff (like adapting old, imperfect manual lenses).
I have never been interested in photography. I have never been interested in art. I do not go out of my way to find videos about either subject. And yet, you've convinced me to check out your other videos!
@@oberynne5043 mission accomplished! May you develop at least a passing interest in the art of photography 😁😁

Wow $300 plus for what looks like a total hot mess of terrible camera design. Hard pass Lomography.
omg shoutout mtl im following
I'll admit, the Lomo'Instant Wide Glass is tempting, but not at that price point! As for the comment about AA batteries, it's so true! I was photographing a War of 1812 event in Midland, Ontario, in full 19th Century civilian garb with my F5, and the batteries died, so I rushed into a grocery store while the battle raged in the streets, got a big pack of batteries and was out in no time at all with a fresh set of batteries.
@@AlexLuyckxPhoto yessss I love a rechargeable battery because the environment is great and all but the convenience of being able to re-up on battery life anywhere any time is nothing to scoff at
Nothing about the remote control in the lens cap ?
@@erwindegroot8760 mine did not come with a lens cap 🤷♀️
@@YvonneHansonPhotography Ok, valid reason.😄 The camera comes normally with a lenscap with an integrated IR remote for the shutter. One button activates the shutter and the other button activates the selftimer.
@erwindegroot8760 damn that sounds really cool hahaha, I wish I had known that was a feature that comes with it! I guess because mine was a loaner camera, someone else had already lost the lens cap hahaha
I know you said you like to eyeball the exposure, but in case you find it useful, there are free lightmeter apps that work well :)
I’ve been pronouncing “lomography” all wrong …I’ve been wanting to try out instant film for a while so thank you for this great video.
For inside shots with the flash on try putting the camera in f 22. It should reduce the the the wash out.
I would love to try shooting either instax square or wide but not having a decent choice of an SLR camera is a complete deal breaker for me. Which is why I end up just shooting a refurbished Polaroid SX-70 converted to shoot 600 film, even though Polaroid film is really expensive and vulnerable to heat, cold, light, dark, time, space, and basically any conditions whatsoever.
I want to say this is a bad camera design, but I don't think it is completely. See from what you said about this camera I can picture many ways they could have fixed many of these issues. Having an option to do everything manually could really improve this camera. I know this is for beginner/intermediate photographers but even just having full control for professionals would be nice. I am a manual SLR kind of film shooter so to me, not having manual shutter/aperture controls and the like make it hard for me to use cameras like this. I recognize this camera is not marketed towards consumers like myself, but to a more casual market segment. However some of the design choices are pretty terrible in some ways. Why only F/8? With a big 90mm that has a film size this big that seems pretty disappointing. Also that tab to open the camera should be on the bottom portion of the camera, not up by the top. I could easily make the mistake of exposing the film if I never saw this camera. The viewfinder as you mentioned is also in a terrible place. Perhaps they could make a viewfinder like Leica did where the focus ring is connected to a linkage where it focuses the viewfinder too. I don't imagine making this an SLR would really be easy so this is a good way around it. Also why not move that to the top? I'm curious Yvonne, who is this camera really pointed at in the market? It seems very large to be a simple point and shoot where a lot of the appeal for those cameras is to be small, (the size may intimidate beginners) and it doesn't have all manual features for an advanced photographer, and it shoots pretty expensive film. The size of the film plus it being instant seems strange although I understand why someone would want that, but can it really compete against the other wide cameras lomo makes? Let me know you're thoughts. Great video as usual.
I agree with the question of who this is pointed to. I saw all the features, and thought it was pointed at Formal Consumers™, but when I tried to use it in more advanced ways, it backfired. That said, I do really think the weather conditions held me back. Perhaps someone living in a climate with better weather, or even just a better season, would have done all the same things I did and still gotten better results. So I'm not sure. Its definitely more than what a beginner would need, more than a point and shoot, and stacked with creative options. In a way, I do feel like I am part of the target audience for this camera, which is maybe why I still like it even after failing so hard with it.
There's a few posts in Instax groups on Facebook about the distancing and it turns out the markings on the camera are not completely true. I really want it (once it's available again) but will probably have to spend a few packs to calibrate/mark the correct distances on the camera. As well ass adding a viewfinder on the top (centered to the lens),
📷 engagement (i'm lame)
@@dawnx8096 hehe thank youuuu
It's sad that film for the old Polaroid Folding cameras is no longer available. Because if it were these toy cameras would not exist. First thing I thought when I saw this camera is "where is the optical rangefinder?". Obviously there is a real need for one of these devices and having it linked to the lens is a problem that was solved over 100 years ago. Then there are the Aperture and Shutter controls, which do not exist. What are we doing with Waterhouse Stops from the 1880's? I would suggest that you tell Lomography that this is not a camera, it's a child's toy that they are charging way too much money for. BTW, I would value this as a 15 USD toy.
You ARE dazzling🎉. For the macro shots, distance is measured from the object to the film plane, not sure if that helps.
Thank you!!! I try ;) I have four more shots left in the camera, I'll take them in macro mode measuring distance from the film plane and reportt back!
Thanks for the review of the new glass version. I have the original and love it. A camera like this is best used as a fun camera with some cool features. A "serious" camera with manual features would cost 3 times as much, which exists in the Mint RF70. Otherwise I think its best using a Fuji camera that can print directly to the other Instax share printers (SP2, SP3). That way you get manual controls and don't waste any film. That's what I do.
2:52 how do eat your film leader and not notice
This is a very questionable review. You showed us mostly awful photos and proceeded to claim you like the camera 😅 Please try the MiNT RF70, if you get the chance!
I KNOW OK!! I agree lol. I DO like the camera, I just wish I had understood it better from the start. I'll try the MiNT, a few folks have recommended it to me!

aye thank you!!!
happy new year keep watching ur video in 2025 fans from taiwan
Yvonne, one way around the caveat of the viewfinder, is to put a cold shoe in that position, allowing you to put a small viewer (like linhof, Leica and a few other cameras have), allowing composition at lens axis, horizontally, and if you have a complex viewer like the linhof one, parallax compensation(for the vertical distance).
but in that case the film ejection is in the way. The frame being ejected upwards is the big issue.
@@hfiguiere not if you think laterally by making it swing-away, or the mount on the front edge, so no obtrusions.
Yvonne, Lomography doesn't make a "instax Wide" camera...because they make the Lomograflok back for 4x5" cameras, this takes the wide, so no need to make a camera, as the lomograflok can work in most LF cameras, as long as the back can 'spread' wide enough, and you can use the focus spacer (as the film plane is 1-2cm behind the standard one (most double sheet holders)); besides, you are limited to asa 800 anyway, so if you are in bright light, the wide is no good, it would flare like crazy.
Get the MiNT instax cameras.

Instax Wide is a fantastic film, unfortunately the off the shelf camera options are unimpressive or buggy, sorry the Wide Glass was so temperamental for you, I was hoping to see some great shots per your usual. I have a 'hacked' Instax Wide 300 with a Mamiya Universal Press lens mount by Alin of Analogue Studio DC. All functions of the actual camera have been removed except for the eject motor, running aperture, shutter speed, and focusing through the Mamiya lens. My current favorite lens setup is a Mamiya-Sekor 100mm f2.8, and I use a laser "tape measure' mounted on top for my focus distance reading.
They are much to expensive for what basically is a Fuji Instax 100 from ebay at 20$ but new for 200$ because Fuji
Median hourly wage in is 28.75 CAD in Canada, so the camera costs the median Canadian a little more than 13 hours of labor. In the US, the median wage per hour is 23.11 USD, so it costs the median American a little more than 12 hours of labor. So, not great, but a far cry from what Kyle McDougall talks about in the UK, where film is 50% more expensive than in the US, and this camera would cost ~13.5 hours.
This is great info, thank you for breaking it down! I'm surprised to hear film photography items are that much more expensive in the UK, I haven't visited in some time but I'll have to bring my own film next time I do D:
Lomography is always a “quiero y no puedo”, a nice try but meh 😩
I just want Fuji to make an *actual* manually controlled instax camera. Almost all the "off-brand" ones are either stupidly expensive or half-assed. If the lomo wide camera were compatible with proper lenses and real controls we've have a second christmas upon us.
Same! Give me a proper shutter speed> The old Polaroids that shot fuji fp100 had manual focus, bokeh and decent shutter time for 1960's
For macro mode, are you doing distance from the front of the lens, or distance from the film plane? Focus distances should be measured from the film plane (indicated with a circle with a line through it on the camera body)
@@flcon16 this is a great point, I was doing distance from the lens 🙃 I have 4 more shots, I'll try distance from the film pane for the next ones
Yeah, I was thinking the same. Unless one actually do macro, measuring from the front of the lens is usually close enough that you probably could go a lifetime not hearing about that detail. In old cameras, especially for motion pictures. There was even a hook at the film plane so you could attach a measuring tape for accurate distancing. Also, I have been tinkering with extension tubes on my own cameras, and found that not only do I have to measure from the film plane, but if I overdo the extension (surprisingly easy).. I quickly get to the point where the infinity focus is inside the lens xD Also, as you focus closer you also get narrower depth of field (why tilt shift lensing done "wrong" looks like miniatures), and as these are big film planes, so I guess they are equivalent to medium format in DoF characteristics, so for tests I would suggest, instead of objects, using a ruler sticking out from the front of the lens to figure out how much the lens might be off, if it's not a problem with how it's measured.
You'd think that if they're gonna have a viewfinder that offset, they'd at least put frame lines in the viewfinder....
The flash being too weak to trigger the strobes is a huge bummer. This could be so cool for studio portrait sessions... Macro seems like an overall poorly executed idea? Ideally you'd have a lot of light for F/22 mode, but you can't trigger it. You can't see anything useful through the viewfinder either. Does it at least have a film plane alignment guide??
@@Grumskiz I had an idea for macro mode lol, it should come with a little measuring tape that pulls out of the front that represents the exact distance at which macro mode will focus. I think there are ways around the trouble, but I struggled with the wasted film! What would an alignment guide be?
@YvonneHansonPhotography i don't know the proper name for it. It's the circle with the horizontal dash through it that is printed on some camera bodies. I've had pretty good success taking self portraits with a measuring tape sticky-taped to the horizontal line and holding it up to my temples to make sure I'm in focus. Granted, that's for 5ft not 1 foot...
@@YvonneHansonPhotography Early Minox sub-mini cameras actually came with a little measuring chain for doing exactly that, being at the right range to take pictures of documents and stuff.
@@YvonneHansonPhotographyI can't remember which one, but a recent camera (I think it was an instant camera) came with a hand strap that was specifically the exact length to also serve as a measure for the macro mode. So clever!
There is a PC sync to trigger strobes from the camera. It works along with the 1/30 mode. It works great with strobes.
The 1st story had me dying 😂
Your camera is clearly defective, the lens is quite misaligned and the vignette is crazy high in one of the corners as a consequence. I have one of these cameras, unbranded, quite a bit cheaper than the price of the flick film, and could get good exposures with iso 320 film with the flash at 2 to 3 meters. I also wouldn't recommend using phoenix with it.
Hi! I'd really appriciate your answer to my questions. What settings are you recomending to indoor shooting? With warm lighting (like a roof lamp), no day light. L setting, flash or no flash? And what setting to indoor with some daylight and warm lamps? And whatis your best tips on when to use flash and when not to? Thank you so much in advance!
@@93Jejje indoosr I always recommend using flash! If you're inside or in any kind of dark conditions, use the flash. Flash off only when outdoors in full sun.

If Paris is the city of Lovers, and London is the city of Bakers, Buenos Aires is the city of dreamers. I love how the buildings and streets began challenging your impression of the city. It is an amazing place to be especially after a rain. Security is a concern as in any large city but not really safety. Typical crime there is petty in nature, a stolen phone or bag when not paying attention. So it is good to be careful without becoming paranoid (many Argentines are a bit paranoid). I have been there dozens of times and never had an issue, but I pay attention. Great video, thanks for sharing.
