Whether you are learning drums at 30 or learning drums at 50, are you too old to learn drums? This is a question that seems to come up a lot online.
I can understand the frustration of wondering if something is worth it or not. It can feel impossible when you start something and especially at a later point in life.
The fact is, I go over some in-depth reasons of why you are NOT too old to learn or start playing the drums.
Starting drums at 40 or 60? No big deal. If you are physically well with no pain or limitations on your movement, drums are waiting with open arms.
I hope this video encourages you! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

    Hahhaa! I just bought my 7pc kit- I’m a few months short of 55. Lol! Which means- yes I grew up when Metallica Slayer Iron Maiden etc. were all starting. Back then I did try to drum for a month or so and sucked so I quit. But of course I dig other genres and all. But starting now is a blast. I’m not going to headline with some band, but just have a positive healthy hobby. Thanks for posting this video. Keep on rockin’.

    I pick nylon for feel rather than sound. I always figured the difference in sound is subtle to begin with and pretty much inaudible in a full mix; but I like nylon's solid feel on cymbals.

    Hey man- I am one of those people that has played drums since..I pulled out pots and pans. Literally. I was 2 and by 3 my mom and dad say I was scatting along jazz saxophone solos by Michael Brecker . However, my mom, dad, uncle, half brother, sister in law, are all professional musicians. So…I couldn’t escape it. heh. I mainly taught myself. it’s also like I always say “yeh- how many parents out there are going to want to buy their kid loud drums? And we lived in a duplex apartment!!! We were very poor too so, got a snare , then maybe 18 months later a hihat, then next Chanukah I got a bass drum and my older mentor gifted a (actually awesome) late60s ziljdian A 22” ride. So I could type so much about this subject but instead of writing essay here, I always tell people, and students “it’s never too late to learn!!” And I had to basically relearn how to play 1.5 times, one because I sure could shed and play along and developed 4 way coordination and good time keeping. But my HAND, muscle technique? At age 17 My drum mentor said “dude the amount of gigs you’re playing already if you don’t let me teach you change your technique, you’re gonna have bad carpal tunnel and or serious injuries by 21 and he was right. Also-what you say about all things being more developed and all and how the mind changes as you get older, something great you pointed out. *Last point ; total openness, there’s…. A “liiitle” bit of drugs and alcohol in the music industry, right? Idk maybe yall never heard of that 😋 I became a heroin addict for 8 years. Just got 15 months clean. I play for the love of it now, and even though I am blessed and greatful to have 2 gigs this weekend? I turned down a third just because- it wasn’t enough money for the hassle and long drive each way. Etc. so I’ll starve a little and be proud of where I set my boundaries as a musician- and know that even at 30, I AM getting old man!! Lol. So I have a gig at 8am tomorrow? I m not gonna play a gig til 1 am tonight. get to sleep maybe by 3:30am and show up to a church gig for somewhere I’ve just been filling in for, all tired and unprofessional. And that’s another thing (last I promise): Most people can be more professional as they get older, they having gone thru different experiences, etc. So. Starting so young and leaving high school to tour ? I was very unprofessional at times. Now I meditate every day , (don’t shoot heroin! Or anything else) , and , well, listen to those around me more. Which is half of what -playing - actually is, anyway right? Thanks for your great video! Cheers from Philly!

    My ears can't stand B8 cymbals, except for Paiste (never owned any but they sound great). Started 20+ years ago with a Sabian B8 cymbal pack, the only okay cymbal was the ride. Also playing drums sounds different from where your sitting than the front of the set

    I feel like my setup is pretty good. I've moved my ekit 3 times now. I'm terrified moving because it's like I'm so anal about getting it back perfectly to were it was before. For days I'll move things 1 mm haha. The only thing I'm not sure about is my ride. It's right between my 2nd Tom and floor tom. It's fairly low and tilted enough so I can hit it fine but I often tap the edge which makes it crash when I'm just trying to ride on it. I just need to practice on it more I think. 90% I'm on the hihat. Everyone is different but placement of the ride would be a cool video.

    • @AttunedMusician
      @AttunedMusician 21 день тому

      Yea, finding and keeping the perfect set-up can be annoying! I can understand what you're talking about with the ride. It can seem out of place with everything else sometimes (especially with 3 toms). I can add that to the 'video to make' list, but it can kinda vary for each drummer, especially with ekits. I feel like sometimes they can mis-trigger. You may have to come into the ride cymbal with more of a straight wrist if you want to ride vs. crash it (vs. a bent wrist which will kind of force you to play with the shoulder of your stick on the edge of the cymbal vs the bow with the stick tip). I'd have to see how the set-up looks, but there are tons of little tweaks. lol

    What's the lowest price you think is possible without compromising quality and/or sound? I know it's a tough question to answer, but I'll be fine with your best guess. $600 is a whole drum set. Lol. Or is paying as much for your cymbals as you do for your set the nature of the beast?

    • @AttunedMusician
      @AttunedMusician 28 днів тому

      Sadly, It honestly is kinda the nature of it all if you want quality. If we are talking B20 cymbals only, you could spend about $700 as of this writing and get some decent Sabian XSR's (performance set). Or, you could spend a little more and grab the Sabian Stratus cymbal pack ($850). Those new Stratus cymbals sound fantastic for the price-point. I know Meinl makes some decent B10 cymbals that are a bit more affordable that you could look into (Classics series). I think they sound pretty good (a little around $600). There are tons of other cymbal companies that make great cymbals. Even more under the radar who aren't as well known.. Honestly too many choices lol.. Makes my head hurt. Sabian, Zildjian, Paiste Meinl, Dream, Instabul, Stagg, Wuhan (just a few you could look into) Saluda cymbals is another great company. You could build a cymbal pack with their different lines and probably spend around $600-700 on a decent amount of B20 cymbals. Hope that helps you!

    • @LEOsoulMonarch
      @LEOsoulMonarch 28 днів тому

      @@AttunedMusician Thank you for the info and the advice. I'll have to check em out. It's sad that that's the nature of the beast. 😔 But I have heard of Wuhan before. I'm gonna try them out soon! There was a Zildjian K Crash/Ride that I really liked, but it was around $400, at a USED store!!!! I'm looking into Wuhan because they might be able to give me the crash/ride I want for an affordable price. The other crash/rides I've seen at the popular stores are too thick and clunky for my taste. The whole crash/ride idea was inspired by a Gordy Knudson instructional video in which he started the video with a BADASS groove. He had a 2 piece, hi hats, and a crash/ride which I thought sounded very smooth. And I had a hard time trying to find that smoothness with the crash/rides I found. Also, I'm not starting out as a drummer. I had some good experience drumming (I played at church pretty well, then I took a hiatus). I'm getting back into it, and I thought about trying this video (thanks again). I've been getting cheap and used cymbals overtime to fill my inventory, and I'm in the process of setting up two kits: one with the works and one that's more "minimalist" (it's a Ludwig Breakbeats set). Thanks again for the info fam. 😁👍

      @@AttunedMusician favorite is a hard one. I really love the kerope. That is one that never leaves my setup. That being said, i think the k sweet ride is probably more versatile. In most cases in the studio and locally, I would use my kerope and k con but I don’t think I would tour with them. The road is too hard on gear to use cymbals that expensive in my opinion. I’d probably use my sweet ride and either A crashes or k custom dark crashes if I ever toured again.

    tbh, I dont hear a difference at all... I researched into the matter since my tips shattered all the time. I found out you definitly can hear a difference between different stick models, like if it is a 7A or a 5B, but these two are so similar with the only difference being the tip, I dont hear a difference. Maybe in person it is more pronounced and the subtle difference doesnt translate in a youtube video, but to my ears, no difference. But the thing you say in the end, that nylon sticks dent drum heads, keeps me away from the nylon tips... I often play on backline kits and I dont want to be the douche that destroys the heads...

    • @AttunedMusician
      @AttunedMusician 2 місяці тому

      Yea, I wish the way my ears heard it could be captured in the mics because you're right, the difference is pretty minimal. I don't know if a lot of other drummers have had the dent head problems due to nylon sticks, but it's just been a common theme for me anytime I've used them over the years. I think I'm the problem 😆

      @@AttunedMusician funny coincedence, I found out that my local musicstore carries its storebrand sticks with nylon tips too so I bought a pair of regular 5A and a pair with nylon tips. On the practice pad they sound pretty much the same, not really a difference. They also feel very similar. I will try them out in the practice room now and see, if the nylons hold up. If they do, I might switch permanently.

    If it's been 8 years, what got you back into it?

      That's a good question! I think to help differentiate some of the videos I put out. Compared to drum videos where I talk, these take a lot less time overall to film and edit. I had been thinking about it for a bit and my wife helped me decide last minute too with this cover vs another video idea I had going over drum heads lol

      @@AttunedMusician Well, that's a good idea to diversify content, and viewers do like covers--not to mention, we as drummers like to play them. I hear it doesn't work so well with monetization 😂🙄 but it gets you out there to more viewers.
