Thanks Will, I’m just about to buy a 5D mk ii and whilst people are raving about the 16-35mm zoom lens I’ve always been drawn towards having prime lenses..aside from the quality I think it forces me to have shot discipline and also create a simpler shooting experience…could you recommend any specific primes for this camera? best

I have 24, 35, and 50mm prime lenses that I can use on full-frame, APS-C, or micro 4/3 cameras. However, my full-frame cameras do not do video. I do most of my video with APS-C digital cameras with two zoom lenses and three prime lenses. The 16-55mm f/2.8 and the 50-140mm f/2.8 are the two zoom lenses I use. A 12mm f/2 or 12mm f/2.8 wide-angle, a 55mm f/3.5 macro or 105mm f/2.8 macro, and an optional long telephoto lens are the only three prime lenses I need to use for video.

Not much difference between 3 and 30 BUT there is a clear image difference when it come to the 6.

Been toying with wanting to buy this for a while. I've been able to dial in a 95% similar look w/ filmconvert which I already have so I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I thought halation was amazing until I saw it everywhere lol. Love the range limiter and kodak positive. Shoot w/ BPM 1/8 instead of bloom but bloom would get me past the reflective artifacts that the BPM can cause

Its 1080p is also absolute garbage too.

Wouldn't a 40 mm be a sweet spot between 35 & 50? Here are the three lenses that I'm considering on an APSC system: 15 mm (23 mm equivalent), 27 mm (40 mm equivalent) & 56 mm (85 mm equivalent).

I am on a BMPCC 4k with a Metabones EF-MFT ultra .071x. I am assuming the 35mm recommendation would change based on the MFT setup. Is that the case?

This video came across my page while looking for 50mm lens review for my ZVE1. Sony came out a new lens no which consist of your three focal length, Sony 24-50mm g lens. I guess, if i want one lens for the suggested focal length, i might as well just get this new sony lens as it is cheaper than GMII and lighter for my setup.😊

Mate, this is awesome. The last 2 minutes is exactly what I needed to hear. I’m trying to use my skills to benefit God’s people, and therefore serve more . I prayed about this recently asking God what he wants me to do for him, and asking him to show me, given I run a successful advertising agency, ( after all, surely God wants me doing more than advertising) and then this opportunity presented itself to help a Christ centered rehab, which was an answer to prayer. I love that your video spoke directly to this, it almost felt directed at me.

Did you consciously choose this Zeiss 35mm lens and not 35/1.8 or 35/1.4GM? I have this 35mm Zeiss and it’s not the first time I see people choosing this Zeiss for the video. Some people think this Zeiss is not that clinical as GM. Personally I’m still with this lens is just because how bad the focus breathing in 35GM. And with focus breathing compensating it make a huge crop to compensate this amount of breathing.

Or you could place an adjustment layer above everything and crop that to the size you want and then nothing will cross that threshold no matter what.

Do you use the Sirui Adapter as well with your Sony FX6?

I just got an fx30 and shooting 1080, not using slog, my footage has considerable noise even in lower iso like 1600. Any recommendations?

The lut probably built differently. What you should have done is to use the lut provided by sony or use ColornSpaceTransform on them to have a more baseline comparison

Ofc the noise levels will be bad since 120fps is 1/240 shutter meaning you have 5 times less light entering the sensor compared to 24fps. So if you're already tight on light and can't increase your exposure through aperture, shutter speed or actual lights on set, do not use 120fps. It's not the fault of the fx30. It's simple physics. Fx3 handles better because of the low read noise of the sensor plus the high noise reduction in camera.

For me, I use a 28, 50 and a 100. Covers everything I'll ever need for narrative. For my documentary work, there is a Sigma Art 18-35 f1.8 pretty much as a go to, although I'm transitioning more to narrative these days so I can play with the ideas in my mind. But where primes are concerned, for my narrative work, I use just the 28, 50 and 100 lenses. They're all older lenses converted to cine as well, I should add. I'm a follow focus junkie haha. That being said, I think there is a lot to be said for the 35mm lens, too, as you've covered in this video. I'd be equally happy with the 24/28, 35, 50 trinity I think. this video was immensely helpful. I currently own an FX3, and I’m trying to decide whether to get another FX3, and FX 30, or bite the bullet, and get the FX6 as my new A cam. As much as I would love the internal NDs of the FX6 I’m probably going to hold off until I have more business to justify that and purchase an FX30 as my B cam for the time being.

Very good sound from the Hollyland - rich, full and clear, the dji sounds cold and sharp.

Gain is too high at 6:00, sound is clipping. Not the mic's fault, just an adjustment.

Nice photos, I remember about 10 years ago I took my ff Nikon with 35mm prime and knocked the camera on the kids heads a few times 😂 - go light and enjoy!

Hey Will. Great video! Late to the party, but I just got the FX30 and I’ve had no issue with the 120 in terms of noise so long as my slog 3 is overexposed up to +2.0. And I was up to about 6400 iso. Not saying it was totally clean but once the shadows were darkened in post it looked great. That seems to be the trick to nailing the 120 conundrum. The huge issue I had was more with rolling shutter at 120. It’s god awful!

Did you shoot in log? If so, how did you color correct?

As a photographer slowly doing more video, I’m really starting to appreciate these 3 focal lengths, and how something like an 85 is just too tight for most video situations. 50mm is plenty for nice tight shots, and the 24mm is my favorite overall
