Let's over-analyse some card games.
Reviewing Every MTG Thunder Junction Commander In Two Sentences Or Less
In this new series, "Brew it or Bin it", I very briefly review every new legendary creature introduced in Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
I announce whether I would personally be interested in making a deck based on the Commander (brew it) or I don't find them compelling and would sooner chuck them out (bin it).
For more from me, check out some of the writing on games I have done for Superjump Magazine: www.superjumpmagazine.com/author/benjaminmacready/

Let's Talk About Treasure Tokens
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
There has been a lot of discourse recently regarding treasure tokens and the role that they play within Magic: the Gathering. I felt that I should make a video outlining this debate and summarising some of the arguments which are being made. This video has an accompany article which can be read here: swlondoner.shorthandstories.com/treasure-tokens-an-analysis/index.html The article goes into mo...

but very good work here with these videos! must be an enourmous piece of work but it's the best youtube list so far
Thanks :) I'm glad you're enjoying the series.
I liked magic but with the plainswalker it went all donwhill from there...
Part 3 - includes the strongest editions in the entire game
Hearing the bit at 5:37 after the release of Thunder Junction.... 😂😂😂
Pronouncing “thrashed” as “frashed” is peak th fronting 13:30
The creator of MTG knew exactly what would happen
I really appreciate you putting so much effort in to make these. They bring back good memories.
Thanks :) I appreciate you saying that and I'm glad you're enjoying the series.
You forgot the Revised series. The most important one.
Like I mention in episode 1, I don't include any sets in this series that only contain reprint.
"In response to your declaration of attack, I remove my pants." Quote from people who aren't allowed within 500 yards of a school
Though a cameo mechanic, Storm has finally shown up in Standard with the new Ral!
Kamigawa is cool
This series was phenomenally helpful as someone who played back in 4th edition and then missed like...two decades. Hope it continues into future years!
Thanks :) . Yes once Duskmourn is released I will make a video covering all of the sets that came out in 2024.
jace doesnt get rid of your library and hand. it gets rid of your library, and your hand becomes the library.
Interesting lil video! I somehow had missed the spoiler for modal spell tribal!
Thanks :) . Are you going to brew around the new Riku?
Good video! Just that the representation of the Delve mechanic was a bit off. It was fetchlands and very efficient low costed spells that made them busted in older formats, not dredge.
No way you called the wild west set!!!
Thanks :) although people had been speculating about a wild west set for a while before I made this.
14:40 No. Ninjutsu doesn't work so that "when a creature DAMAGE an opponent" you get to use the ability. You use it when an unblocked attacking creature with the ability is declared. Then you switch that creature with one from your hand
This is such a great series. It really helped getting me up to date when I reentered Magic around Midnight Hunt after having left it as a teenager just before the first Kamigawa block. It is a shame that not more people are watching this.
I really appreciate you saying this, I'm glad you enjoyed the series. :)
"What's he gonna pick from Homelands? That set sucked." "To represent Homelands, I have chosen a card that sucks."
Yeah Hungry Mists was a bit of a memey choice. If I made this series again today, I would probably choose a different card to represent Homelands. I do still kinda see what 2020 me was driving at though. 😅
Geological appraised basically makes it a yuhioh deck 💀
I love how mutate is basically just digivolving
I'm not sure what it is as I was never a MTG player back in the day but I love the 1993 beginning history of the game and watch as many videos on it as I can find. Just something about how raw and powerful the base Alpha/Beta/Unlimited set was and how iconic/banned/restricted/Reserved Listed many of the cards are still today.
Yeah those early cards have a genuine sense of Magic and wonder to them. I know exactly what you mean. :)
@@macreadymusings I think I'd be more into modern MTG if it wasn't so multiverse focused. I'm more interested in the high fantasy/dark gothic style it surrounded. Sounds like MTG is now going to Marvel for 2 years and that just doesn't sound like MTG to me, no doubt the rare 1/1 card will be the Infinity Gauntlet or something lol
Innistrad is the reason why I’m A magic fan now
It is one of the all time great sets. :)
This was really fun :D
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Built a mill/ Kareverk deck. Yup. His graveyard recursion is insane. Nasty af
I'd love to see more of these videos for other sets, even past sets would be cool
Thanks :) . Yeah I think I'll put some more of these together.
Lol brew it on Vial smasher and not on Jasper, Jasper has crazy outlaw potential because it also turns opponents stuff into outlaws when you get it. And ping when outlaw enters, is that not boring?
You are on theme with the set as binning Bristly Bill is a crime.
I really like this format. I'll subscribe if you make another one for when the next set is out. 🙃
Yeah I think I will put another one of these together, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Another video! We’re eating good this month
Yeah, I only released 1 video in 2023, so I wanted to be more active on here for 2024. :)
Riku is the non-storm spellslinger commander that players have been asking for. It gains so much value. It has become my favorite brawl deck on Arena.
Glad you're enjoying playing with Riku. Yeah I think Thunder Junction gave Spellslinger a bunch of fun new Commanders.
2:05 why not for commander? it seems fine
Essentially it's a power level issue. The restriction of not being able to cast spells from your hand, on your turn, is really interesting and definitley opens up some fun deck building possibilities. You can Foretell cards, Plot them or fill your deck with a bunch of flash cards to cast when it's not your turn. Unfortunately the reward of drawing one extra card a turn for doing this is a bit weak for the work you need to put in. Definitely still build around Jem if you'd like to, I just personally wouldn't.
@@macreadymusings Tbh I think this card of card is made for the multiplayer format. because there are more turns that aren't you instant and cards with flash are more valuable.
Just found your channel this series really helps new people like me understand what the hell were looking at lol thank you so much!
I always love getting these sorts of comments. Thanks a bunch. :)
Funny thing you mentioned about Cowboys and here they are at Outlaws of Thunder Junction and Cowboy Jace - this aged wonderfully
Aw man, I was looking forward to showing this one to my Gran ;)
You're still free to show it to any and all of your other relatives. 😁
All of my goodwill towards unsets was burnt away with Unfinity.
The way your voice breaks at 25:50 shows just how hilariously convoluted unfinity's legal mechanics ended up being 😹
Haha yeah I was tempted to redo that take, but I kept it exactly for this reason.
In my opinion, they really should've kept the silver border on Unfinity cards that wouldn't be eternal legal. And, stickers probably shouldn't have been eternal legal either.
Yeah, I agree, keeping the Silver border would have a much better solution than the acorn stamp. It would be much more clear, and it would keep a piece of the game's history alive. Non-eternal legal stickers also would have riled people up a lot less.
29:15 Yes, of course.
Even acknowledging the difficulties of stickers - should have been clips - they really shouldn't have attempted to institute TWO Extra Deck mechanics in one set; at least have Attractions be more Contraptions or something, geez.
Yeah clips would have worked nicely. I think there would have been a lot of ways to modify cards in the same way that stickers can without risking potentially damaging them. They could also have used semi-transparent plastic sheets, with text and pictures on them, that could be placed over the top of the cards.
25:35 you don’t draft the sticker sheets, you just use the 3 you opened.
The chicken costume story was so good, I texted the script of it to my friends. Plus...that is the "cheese stands alone" music for sure, and its IS the card that represents the set as decided by middle schoolers everywhere in 1999.
Haha it's just some royalty free electric guitar music, but I'm glad it worked as a theme song for Magic's cheesiest card.
Great video! I I’m always excited to see your posts
Thanks for saying that, I appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :)
Bad Time Spiral choice. The block was about Time. Should have picked a Suspend card since that was the mechanic of the set. I’d choose… Errant Ephemeron. A limited powerhouse.
Haunt isn’t remembered. It’s been forgotten. Dredge is the problem mechanic from the set. And if there was a 2nd problem one, it would be Transmute.
