Yeah who would have imagined back in 1993 that Shivan Dragon would eventually be in the same game as a 1920s cat demon crime boss and giant anime-esque mechs?
All sets that I played with and remember well except alpha and beta, which were before I got into the game in '94. Even at that time, sets like arabian nights, legends and antiquites and an aura of mystique around them, because it was hard to find boosters for them at your local cardshop. They were printed very briefly, relatively, then discontinued it seemed like to me and my friends, who, at the time were playing 3rd edition or "revised". So those three sets and a very mysterious feel and whenever we happened to run across some of the cards from those sets we were in awe. You have to remember this was before ebay or amazon, so you couldn't just see the entire set online and order what you wanted. You had to hunt for them in the real world. Fun times! XD
Just wanted to thank you for producing these videos. I recently got into mtg and really wanted to know more about the history. There's so much content out there but its typically either for complete newbies or people that are assumed to understand the entire history. Its nice to have some middle ground.
Thanks that's very kind of you. :) Yeah that's the sort of demographic I was shooting for. I try to be complex enough that it's not just information which you will already know, or could find out with a quick Google search, but simple enough that I don't lock a lot of people out of the loop.
@@macreadymusings I am very much so enjoying it. I just recently got into Magic, and because of these videos, I can actually converse with older fans and have an understanding of what they're talking about
Getting back into MTG after a 27ish year hiatus. I haven’t played since fallen empires/ice age. Getting back into via Arena. It’s changed quite a bit, but bones are still there and I’m having a blast.
all of these were out just before I started playing, my first cards ever were a 4E starter and two chronicles boosters! I did eventually crack one that got me my first elder dragons I was so shocked! I did eventually collect all five, but more recently I gifted all of those to my wife they're still in the binder (along with the time spiral throwback version of nicol bolas) definitely my favorite subset of MTG cards like ever they were all so cool and just felt really special, you know?
I'm not sure what it is as I was never a MTG player back in the day but I love the 1993 beginning history of the game and watch as many videos on it as I can find. Just something about how raw and powerful the base Alpha/Beta/Unlimited set was and how iconic/banned/restricted/Reserved Listed many of the cards are still today.
@@macreadymusings I think I'd be more into modern MTG if it wasn't so multiverse focused. I'm more interested in the high fantasy/dark gothic style it surrounded. Sounds like MTG is now going to Marvel for 2 years and that just doesn't sound like MTG to me, no doubt the rare 1/1 card will be the Infinity Gauntlet or something lol
Interesting card choices for the sets, subscribed :) Your video currently stopped at what I consider to be the Silver Age of Magic, but this one is the Golden Age!
@@macreadymusings Oh, to be honest with you, I still follow it, but I sold and gave away all of my Modern cards in 2018 so I mostly play 93-94 and sometimes Premodern. In my opinion, it's impossible to keep up with the current changes and be competitive. Also, even though the new cards are numerous, there are too many restrictions and they somehow feel shallow, almost AI-generated. But maybe I'm just old :)
In terms of a them making a set like The Dark with modern sensibilities; that is kinda what they did with Planar Chaos. They’re both philosophical explorations of the colour pie that stretched the limits of what the colours could do right to the breaking point. I can’t see them ever trying that again since the formation of the council of colours though.
Tivadar's Crusade is also a good pick because it illustrates the growing importance of tribes in Magic, and Goblins in particular. Prior to the Dark there were only 4 goblins in the game I think (if you include Goblin King) but the Dark more than doubled this number and had multiple Goblin payoff cards (Shrine, Caves, etc.).
The efficient creatures are the most iconic cards in Arabian Nights, but I think something like Diamond Valley or even Library of Alexandria would have made a better pick because that was the first time there were lands that either didn't produce mana or did something other than make mana. The only lands in ABU are the basic lands and dual lands. Very good choices for Antiquities and Legends!
That's very true, the utility lands of Arabian nights are an iconic part of the set and they could easily have been chosen to represent it. With a format like this I'm not always able to mention every single development and innovation, so it's good to have comments pointing out other developments I might not have been able to cover. :)
@@macreadymusingsI look forward to seeing what you pick for the other sets. I think you have some really hard choices on your hands! The ones that are hardest will be when you have to choose between a representative card, an iconic one, or one that really defined a metagame or Magic for a long stretch of time. Like for Ice Age, do you choose the iconic Jester's Cap, the face of the set for so long, Necropotence, the card that defined an entire summer of Magic and then Extended years later (and had awesome art!), or something like Blinking Spirit, which exemplifies the slooooooowwww nature of the set ("glacial" is highly appropriate lol)? Or maybe Brainstorm. Because it's Brainstorm lol and Ice Age introduced the entire concept of cantrip to Magic (and how important has that been?) Can't wait to see what you pick!
I really like the content, and want to see more in the next videos. But as English is not my first language, it's a bit difficult for me to understand some phrases due to the speed of your speech, and captions were not available. So I suggest you talking a bit slower in the next videos, so everybody could understand it. Thanks :D
I'm glad you liked it, and that's a solid tip. I'm quite an excitable person so I tend to talk quite quickly. I'll try and talk a bit slower in my next videos. :)

I got a New Capenna ad when I watched this, it’s so interesting to see how far this game has come. This innocuous little card game.

What about Revised?
Like I say in the video, I don't cover sets which only contain reprints so no Revised, or other Cores Sets until Core Set 2010.
