Приєднався 15 вер 2020
Edged Combatives is the online presence of PTK-SMF NOLA instructor Guro Reny Ramos. We are the local greater New Orleans area chapter of the global PTK-SMF Organization under Tuhon Tim Waid teaching the authentic Pekiti Tirsia Kali system of Filipino martial arts.
PTK is designed for real world altercations and is used by military, LEO’s and private citizens world wide. If your knife "defense" does not originate from a blade fighting art, it may be ineffective.

Tuhon stopped in New Orleans for a last minute seminar at my school and we sat down to discuss some Pekiti. This excerpt he addresses why he uses the "Authentic" term when describing his teaching of Pekiti Tirsia Kali. After years of studying with some Grand Tuhon's 1st generation Students/Instructors, he realized he was receiving conflicting information on the system which GT would have to cor...

However the drill itself is unrealistic in terms of how an actual engagment may go down. BUT individual parts of a drill can be applied to real life scenarios with little or even no modification. Here we explore a few options to such drilling segments. What other options can your or ...

Pharaoh. When he pulls that arm upward you could come in with the knee to the rib. Why doesn’t anyone show that? Why isn’t the blade going into the artery in the thigh to take out Balance and under the chin? What’s this kind of fight called? Thank you why doesn’t anyone go into the armpit? This is very get into the armpit for me. Thank you
I've only ever seen clips, but you're improving by leaps and bounds. Tuhon is the GOAT
@@PopTart698 hard not to improve your game under the guidance of real swordsmen!
Got to disagree with Guru a bit here. I say that as someone who has trained with him a number of times and has the utmost respect. But I believe he’s a bit wrong There is no “perfected system” that is also scientific. Because science constantly changes and evolves as new data comes in. Same with any system of fighting or combat. Look at Weaver. That was the gunfightinv paradigm for quite a while. It was taught in the system. Today not many folk are shooting people with Weaver because it has shortcomings when shooting in kit, shooting and moving, etc. It’s simply suboptimal. Times changes. Mores change. Equipment and technology changes. A system must change with them at times. Like PTK would have to change if people carried weapons with hand guards regularly. Targeting the hand when it’s protected by a crossguard/handguard is bad tactics. So PTK would have to evolve its targeting, for instance. Just a small example but there is no perfect system because there is no perfect, ever changing paradigm. Maybe the system is perfect for what it’s been developed for but if new elements are exposed or what have you the system may not address those new elements Any system must evolve when change occurs if necessary. Otherwise it stagnates and stagnation is death.
Yeah, it's funny how certain individuals take it personally and get hell bent out of shape and rant on and on about how Tim uses the term "authentic" to describe the system of PTK as it was taught to him... yet these very same people with no real skill or understanding, but are "loud" in social media would claim to know better 'cause they constantly need to feel validated.
Amen.
The one thing is I would say is that "no other weapon system organizing by timing" is probably off a bit. What he lays out for the structure of the Doce Methodos is also a description of Nach/Indes/Vor in like....all of Kunst De fechtens and the Zettel was written in what...1400? Even the basic structure of sport fencing and Right of Way is more or less lined up with those categorizations
@@selfcritical correct. Because that was/is sword fighting. The source of filipino edged weapons. But most fma these days look nothing like sword fighting and more like caveman clubbing.
cut pool noodle in half, wrap both halves in duct tape. go play. keep eye protection but no gloves and for men no shirts and everybody wearng shorts and shoes. ( probably won't ever be kali fighting barefoot on a tatami mat so I can't undestand why I would ever train barefoot) you can go as hard and fast as you want and people find out real quick from the sting that defence is important.
You're a very dangerous Man with a Blade. Great video.
Sorry,Gentlemen, when tapping is to come first, is it necessary to do it with a hand? The same as it with awaiting the the hand withd knife? Yes, these are the question fo a beginner, yours sutt bewginns at upper level. WOuld you please maki it more applicable for all the three levels. Experts often fall into the trap of dealing with experts. Then, why are the showing it for everybody. Moay by for money? I don´t think so, itś just the lack of methodology. With all respects, please help the beginners, first. Paul,69 retires
i'm not sure i understand the question exactly. Tapping is a necessary skill you will "pass" through. But as you progress in the art and your footwork, timing and distance management become better, being in tapping range should slowly fade away. Not to say it won't happen at all, but you can better avoid being in that situation by either, moving out of range of an attack or properly countering the attack with your own strike to the attack. essentially attacking the attack. It is my experience tapping during sparring will happen between the lesser experienced who find themselves in that "oh shit" moment. OR experience fighters who purposefully gamble the encounter. almost everything showcased on this channel can and should be practiced by beginner through advanced. There really are no "beginner" movements. But there are "fundamentals" you should learn and they stay with you throughout your time of training. Hope this helps! Find us on facebook and i'd be happy to talk more in detail via messenger or email.
Great video. Nice to see some aplication. Sometimes these flows look like fantasy. Please, make part 2. More angles.
You got it! I have another variation for fast moving engagements which dont allow for the actual “trapping” like you see here. Especially if the opponent larger/stronger
What this dude smoking ?
@@snydmark you obviously don’t know anything about combat.
😂
All good in theory, but first hand experience, getting stabbed sucks... If you fighting someone with a knife, be prepared YOU WILL get cut no questions asked. As you saw the beginning of this video the guy in the black (instructing) still would have gotten cut on the forearm if it wasn't a fake knife. Your best technique is to just run if you can, or mace then run or use your second amendment.
@@ChrisWizzerd 100% ALWAYS avoid confrontation. But when it cant be avoided it is best to be prepared. Train or not train? And yes this is a drill at first. The there are multiple opportunities to cut that werent even explained. Thanks for your imput! Keep training!
The fist knife fighting seminar i ever attended the guy opened up by stating "Three rules to a knife fight; 1. You are going to get cut 2. You are going to bleed 3. You might die. Learn to be okay with those three rules and you increase your chances of surviving." I took those words heart as a 14 year old. So yeah, I agree with you.
Nice video. Just one thing to aid in your training and something crucial. Stop looking directly at where you are attacking. Your peripheral vision is faster at picking up the movement and object and your looking gives away your intention. It only requires a little bit of practice to dump the habit. The opponent may not be the only threat so you need to keep open vision. It is a commonly mistake
We teach to focus on the opponents weapon and peripheral catches the torso area. Lose focus of their weapon more likely you can not counter that attack. Thanks for your input!

Love Pekiti Tirsia Kali!
Ok my fatass has been hoarding FMA videos and binging on learning online due to in my area there is no FMA schools. Two years ago, when I was fit, I was in the Philippines and learned the basics of three styles. From my knowledge with live blade you don't clash sword with the edge side of the weapon I think. I notice when watching Dog bro videos they swing very hard, This kind of complicated for new people to understand becuase you have respect the blade or you get cut. Sometimes people I notice FMA fruads on youtube explain you hit with the back of the blade when you do the Abaniko, Which it's wrong you hit with the blade side of weapon when you do abaniko..
This is actually true. Purposefully Blade on blade is discouraged but it can happen. There are 3 interactions of a weapon, weapon to weapon, weapon to the space you wish to occupy or prohibit your opponent to occupy and weapon to body. So in ptk, our weapon of choice is the ginunting. There is approximately 3-6 inches of blade on the back end of tip. That is often used. Especially in panastas. abaniko is more the tip and flat of the blade in our system. Swinging hard does not equate to skill all the time. We are swordsmen. If your blade is sharp, not much force will be needed. Skill of footwork and tactics will prevail. Thanks for your participation! You can learn a lot from the internet as long as you recognize true swordsmanship. Wishing you Life, health & success
This doesn't look remotely useful...
Have you ever had a weapon struck at you full force? If so what was your counter?
maybe they know what they are doing and you dont. have you ever thought about that?
Love it bro!!
What you are describing can be said if tons of styles. Not special to PTK.
Very true. It is sword fighting in general. But what i am trying to stress here is what it is not. Too many fma videos demonstrate complete lack of legitimate sword fighting skills. Thanks for your support and watching!
@@edgedcombatives Yeah I agree. When many spar they are lunky or do not use the 5 attacks much, or really any real grace. It's awkward. Tim Wade has some good teachings. What I like about PTK is it is about real world fighting and when we spar we don't have winners or losers, or keep track of points. We enjoy enjoy the practice fighting and getting capable.

85% of knife attacks come from behind or the side with no warning. When you can tell me how to defend against that, let me know. In real knife fights the attacker does not square off, show you his knife and wait for you to get "in position." When you can show me how to prevent getting knifed in the back at a bus stop or in a coffee shop, let me know. Otherwise you are merely fraudulent.
Situational awareness and not being in the wrong place to is how you deal with most of what you are “what ifing” about. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@edgedcombatives Oh come on. Sitting in a coffee shop patio on a main downtown street is "wrong place?" Standing at the bus stop heading home from the movies? ON THE BUS? This situational awareness thing just means you don't have any answers. It is not "what-iffing;" those are the FACTS. I didn't say "what if;" I said WHAT ABOUT '85% of knife attacks come from behind or the side with no warning." This is a fact from data gathered from over 600 knife attacks. Situational awareness is one thing; having eyes in the back of your head when you are having a cuppa with your wife and toddler or just walking down the street in the business district in the middle of the day is another thing. I have a legitimate question and you have brushed it off (thanks for the insult) because you have no answers and you can't afford to tell your students that they ill be stabbed in the back before they can use your Bullshiho. All you knife "experts" say the same thing because you have no answer.
@@kaoskronostyche9939 😂 there IS no answer to being blindly attacked from the back. Zero arts outside clairvoyance can predict or train the what if scenarios you dream up. I guess you are correct and zero training is the answer? 😂 Thanks again for your participation! It is greatly appreciated!

Hello from NYC metro area!!!
hello Anthony!
I wouldn’t try that 😉
first choice is run!
Hm, not really convincing. Who would attack with such a low line thrust instead of a straight stab? Maybe with a sword or a machete, but not with s knife. Not to mention that the attacker in the vid stops the attack mid-air.
This video demonstratesd a low line thrust. There was no slashing at all. But thanks for commenting!
@@edgedcombatives Thanks for the correction, I updated the comment.
@@inspectator9384 actually the lowline thrust or highline are the most common knife attacks. Statistically speaking. A knife jab or straight punch (bladed) are not as common. He only stops because it must be met with equal or greater force…ahead of timing. These are very fundamental applications. A “knife fighter” actually moves very differently or has already adapted to common “defenses”. A sword or machete are better suited for a slashing than a low line thrust. The knife is more a thrusting tool for damage. But in all honesty, the only real way to counter a knife is with equal or superior weaponry. I encourage and welcome these discussions as usually a few minutes video often only can give partial information of a complete system or technique set. If youre in the New Orleans area i invite you to a class! Always ready to teach or learn from anyone!
The most interesting part -at least in my eyes- is how to grab the arm before being stabbed. Unfortunately this is not explained any further. Once you've pinned the arm, there are a lot of options.

Appreciate your input! Can you elaborate what was getting too fancy?
Take down is not difficult which is a transition from ptk to bjj (self defense 101). Then while on the ground the technique was not complex which is what you want.

I carry either my heavy baton or 10z sap just in case of this so I at least have a shot at breaking that arm. It's just such a terrible situation . I know running is best but I'm almost 60 with hip trouble. I'm not out running anybody. I literally got passed up by a 2yr old girl the other day when on my "jog". So I have to stand and make the best of it . Thanks for sharing
Utilize a weapon in your self protection is a MUST for anyone. Not carrying some sort of weapon is falling short in self defense. Stay safe my friend!
What you said at the end is so true. Not even playing, when I was 17, an asshole who attacked me with brass knuckles got his ass whipped and then tried to sue me. I went knee-on-belly after I knocked him down and lit him up a little bit with punches. I was legit afraid he was going to get up and hit me with those brass knuckles. Hitting him on the ground was considered excessive force. It cost me a lot of money in legal fees but I have a clean record and was able to survive that fight with barely a scratch. I threw the first punch too. That guy wasn't coming to give me a massage with those knuckles. A threat and trying to get close enough to get me seriously made me concerned for my safety so I did what I had to do. Stay safe everyone ✌️
Then, even if the law sides with you the public will condemn you for excessive force. 😂 crazy times.
As a BJJ and FMA practitioner for longer than I care to admit, I really dig this video. New subscriber here
who the fuck holds a knife like this?
Nobody raises his knife like screwing a lightbulb...well, maybe in series Z horror movies. The fact is: anybody with two functional neurons and a sharp knife can make a couple fast feints and fck you up horribly. Better run for your life... "defense" against a knife is almost as silly as against a gun. If the wielder is non completely stupid, your chances are close to zero. Stop telling people otherwise, it's dangerous. Roleplaying can kill. Watch here in YT "Knife Defense Won't Work Against A Skilled Attacker" for a realistic take Or "Legit Self Defense Skills" if you want to lyao. :)
You are correct. There really is no defense against a skilled knife fighter. But statistics prove very seldomly is a knife attacker skilled. The safest “defense” is attacking with your own blade or superior weaponry. Run if at all possible. Thanks for commenting!
