More nonfiction: books to be a better educator [CC]
Waaaaaay back when I was a college professor last year, I read three books to try to become a better educator! These were fantastically helpful.
The books:
0:00 Introduction
0:42 Fugitive Pedagogy by Jarvis Givens
4:35 Community as Rebellion by Lorgia Garcia Pena
6:15 Syllabus by William Germano and Kit Nicholls

Another one from the Queer Book Box, delivered direct to my doorstep! And I totally forgot in this video to mention that there is also an interesting commentary on art - art imitating life, or life imitating art - that we see both on the part of the filmmaker the main character befriends, and in the work of the main character's arch rival, Tara Jean Slater. There's a lot to unpack in this book!...

Hello, Bethanne! I'm a history lover. It always perplexes and angers me when important facts are omitted. For example, I recently learned the largest trade partner of the Roman Empire was India. 😮 I've never heard that before in my life! HAPPY READING 📚 ✌️🙂

Fix-It Fiction sounds interesting, but the academic writing makes me less likely to read it. I've read some fan fiction, mostly of poor quality. There was one exception that I read in college that combined the worlds of 5 different TV series (Highlander, Forever Knight, X-Files, Starman, and 1 more) that I quite enjoyed. I understand why original creators would object to it (regardless of whether or not they are rich). However, I believe that people should have the freedom to reimagine a world however they wish. Happy New Year, and go watch some Voltron!

Happy new year!!! I should watch Voltron?? I hadn't even heard of it prior to reading this book. :) Agreed that creators can object or not to fanfiction - a person's response to something is their business! But also, hooray for imagination! :)

Hello Bethanne! Interesting things you mentioned about Fix-it Fics! Does the book explain why the rich creators dislike it when fanfics are done for their works? I always imagine if there were fanfics based on something I do, I would be very excited 😂 then again, I'm not a rich creator, so .. 🤷🏽😂

    • @bethannebruninga-socolar
      @bethannebruninga-socolar 6 днів тому

Not really, because I think that would require mind-reading!! There's a little bit of evidence, like J.K. Rowling in particular has been pretty vocal about her dislike of fanfiction. Others seem to be more neutral or even positive about it. The book contains a few examples of extremely popular tv series that actually acknowledged or even incorporated fanfiction into storylines. So, I think it varies by creator! But I'm with you - I'd be ecstatic if someone was inspired enough by a creation of mine to take it and run with it. :)

Having just finished the book this morning: it was really sad to see James mentally accuse Maria of trying to convert him into another version of her, but on reflection that's exactly what's happening. Maria wants to connect, she knows she NEEDS to connect, but she just doesn't have the emotional tools to reach out and care about another person. The only reason she tries to connect with James at all is that she claims to 'only be good at trans stuff', but she doesn't even bother to empathize with how he's feeling in the slightest bit to help him along. She just monologues at him and dumps her own struggles, because it was always self-serving at the end of the day. So Maria buzzes out of James' life, her only accomplishments being scaring him away from transition and almost certainly hooking him on heroin. I think if there's one lesson to take from whole big awkward exchange that was this book, it's that you need to look outside yourself if you want your life to start getting better. Not only does closing yourself off leave you isolated and numb, it just makes you an asshole. And with the way trans people need to repress themselves to survive, it's sadly really common for a lot of women to turn into a Maria.

I think Fourth Wing is perfect for the "If I see it at a thrift store" category. There is some interesting world building and geopolitical fantasy stuff, but that was more on the sidelines. I wanted more of that stuff! How is your friend liking Highlord Skies?? Have they read the original trilogy or is this their first dive into Dragonlance??

@@bethannebruninga-socolar This is the same friend that I have buddy read much of Dragonlance with, including the original trilogy, the Legends trilogy, and the Preludes. He not enjoying Highlord Skies as much as Dwarven Depths, but he is still pleased.

It was so great!! I think you'd like it. :) Denver was really fun - my friend and I went to a bookstore, a book-themed brewery with a take-one-leave-one wall, and the Great American Beer Festival, lol.

That story sounds good. I also liked a different Beauty and the Beast retelling, The Beast's Heart by Leif Shallcross. It's about Beast realizing that although the way he was raised wasn't his fault, it is his responsibility to become better than his father. It's his journey to become a good man.

I got Maja Lunde's The History of Bees for a while now which I have not read and browsing her other novels I think it's interesting that she often has animals in her books. Your review of The Last Wild Horses reminds me of the Bee book and I look forward to reading it when I get home some time in the future.
