Wake was much more memoir than I expected, but absolutely as you said so enlightening on a massively under explored topic, really a testament to the weight of something that can be carried in graphic nonfic.
100% agree! I expected to learn more history, but it's really alarming (and makes total sense) that she found so little. Now I'm wondering a lot about all the other important things we are missing in our historical records. :(
Hello, Bethanne! I'm a history lover. It always perplexes and angers me when important facts are omitted. For example, I recently learned the largest trade partner of the Roman Empire was India. 😮 I've never heard that before in my life! HAPPY READING 📚 ✌️🙂
I didn't know that either! Thanks for sharing. :) And yes, it's really infuriating that recorded history is incomplete and reflects the biases of the people who recorded it. We're never going to have a complete picture of what happened in the past.
Hello Bethanne! Interesting things you mentioned about Fix-it Fics! Does the book explain why the rich creators dislike it when fanfics are done for their works? I always imagine if there were fanfics based on something I do, I would be very excited 😂 then again, I'm not a rich creator, so .. 🤷🏽😂
Not really, because I think that would require mind-reading!! There's a little bit of evidence, like J.K. Rowling in particular has been pretty vocal about her dislike of fanfiction. Others seem to be more neutral or even positive about it. The book contains a few examples of extremely popular tv series that actually acknowledged or even incorporated fanfiction into storylines. So, I think it varies by creator! But I'm with you - I'd be ecstatic if someone was inspired enough by a creation of mine to take it and run with it. :)
Fix-It Fiction sounds interesting, but the academic writing makes me less likely to read it. I've read some fan fiction, mostly of poor quality. There was one exception that I read in college that combined the worlds of 5 different TV series (Highlander, Forever Knight, X-Files, Starman, and 1 more) that I quite enjoyed. I understand why original creators would object to it (regardless of whether or not they are rich). However, I believe that people should have the freedom to reimagine a world however they wish. Happy New Year, and go watch some Voltron!
Happy new year!!! I should watch Voltron?? I hadn't even heard of it prior to reading this book. :) Agreed that creators can object or not to fanfiction - a person's response to something is their business! But also, hooray for imagination! :)
@@bethannebruninga-socolar Haven't heard of Voltron? I swear, kids these days. :) Although, to be honest, I've tried to watch a few other cartoons from my childhood, and not all of them have been watchable as an adult, so proceed with caution. P.S. Dragons of the Hourglass Mage is awesome!
Haha, yes! My daughter nabbed that little doll bed at Goodwill a few months ago, and it quickly became Pooh Bear's favorite napping spot. I moved it to my desk because then he naps next to me all day. ❤
Wake! Definitely a book I want to pick up at some point.

Oh dear, Supernatural is in there? My niece and sister are MEGA fans !
Hahaha, there is quite a bit of Supernatural in the book, and apparently in the fanfic universe!
Added Wake to my TBR ✨️
me too, with Bethanne's name on it!
Really sleuthing through history, Dr. Hall sounds legit!!
@@MargaretPinard Absolutely!!!

Is that your cat… in a bed?! Sorry I’m distracted and can’t pay attention to the books 😂
