Wavedancer Westerly fulmar
Ireland
Приєднався 25 вер 2020
Wave Dancer our 32ft westerly fulmar has been our vehicle of adventure since September 2007. We ( Yvonne & John) are currently in the home port of Malahide marina, Dublin, Ireland. We have sailed with our three boys William, Jonathan & Christian as we have explored the Irish coast across the Irish sea to the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly before continuing down the French Atlantic coast. Once Christian gets into university it is our plan to become liveaboards, cast off and not be ruled by schedules apart from the tide times as we explore further afield.
John is an ex naval reserve with yachtmaster qualifications. I plan to get my qualifications too before that time. My experience is Glenanns sailing club as a teen & skills picked up on Wave Dancer.
Join us on our voyage of discovery, exploring new places, learning new skills, making friends and enjoying life. Safe Sailing. Take care and God bless.

Sailing gently to Isles of Scilly
#yachts, #cruising, #dolphins,#marine life, #sailing, #isles of Scilly, #motor sailing, Being in the middle of a feeding frenzy allows us film gannets diving and dolphins hunting in the Celtic sea. A serious zoom lens camera is SO on my wish list. Light winds force us to travel gently to the Isles of Scilly. It takes us four hours longer than normal to get there even though we motored most of the way from Ireland.

@@paddymcmullan4276 we were delighted to have a feeding frenzy so close to. I was torn between dolphin watching or gannets diving 🤣 seriously need a good zoom lens camera. Maybe Santa will think I’m a good girl 🤣
Nice video guys its great when you get dolphins on a passage we get very excited. We will definitely go back to the Isles Of Scilly again. Where are you planning on sailing to next year . David & Helen
Currently on the hard in Arzal on the Villaine river south Brittany ( where we made our way to after Isles of Scilly, and other French islands). Hopefully all going well we get down to Almerimar Spain by end of next season to over winter there. Dodge killer whales on the way
Dolphies are always great but that last set were spectacular
@@beverleyportlock9680 half an hour of pure magic.
Great journey glad I could be a part of it albeit watching from afar. I have found the IPhone exceptional in the dark. I can’t believe what flat seas you had. The lake in the park has bigger waves on a calm day. I never thought you would ever stoop to click bate ( John in the flesh😂) what a welcome party as well. Hope we get the same as we’re hoping to do that trip May/Juneish great watch thank you
@@sailingsheriff3349 Thanks Roy,yes iPhone is great for night photography but not for video I have found. Would love to catch bioluminescence in film so beautiful.
Our welcome party swarmed around us for half an hour . I was torn between filming dolphins and the gannets.
Great video, you both look like a happy crew onboard that boat , keep us posted on all your sailing please and the technical points are also very interesting 😊
@@TheHappySailor-xg4pu currently in Arzal for the winter ( since July). We visited in October and due for in December
Loved catching so much dolphin and gannet footage . Such a privilege to be blessed with this incredible opportunity to be part of their lives
What an awesome experience
Interesting to see how the alarm was set up. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
OMG it's fantastic the dolphins and gannets swarming around you
That solar panels and battery set up looks brilliant, very nifty
@@ritamcgearty2954 we are delighted with it
good idea having alarm on just in case you nodded off on night watch
Ah wow amazing footage
We never go close in down there because of the pots and we stay in the outer channel near Lucifer bank. I have never seen Tuskar rock from so far inshore 😄 Good job getting started so early. I hate cold, grey, early starts!
@@beverleyportlock9680 we normally do the outer banks aswell. Just the wind angle had us in so tight to shore. Pots were surprisingly lighter than usual going down the coast. Just around Roslare to Carnesore was heavy with pots especially Roslare to splaugh had tiny markers which was scary
You both looked rather cold bbrrr... I too sleep in my life jacket on night shifts if the weather dictates, or certainly right next to the campionway to grab if not.
Joy of Irish sailing 🤭 keep the damp and wind out there is chance of not being cold
Steering within shallow channels along the coast
Enjoyed that little sail you need to buy John a good set of sailing gloves for Christmas, he looked very cold at the end there.
@@sailingsheriff3349 he has fingerless sailing gloves. Just wasn’t wearing them. He (like me )sail in multiple layers of clothing . He sits behind the sprayhood to keep out of the wind most of the time.
Well explained
Looked rough going, thanks for showing the new anchorages on your trip, nice to hear your verdict on them
@@ritamcgearty2954 Thanks Rita, yeah it was fairly bouncy alright, holding the camera steady was not easy 😂 I was delighted to find 2 new to us anchorage spots to try out. Always handy to have an arsenal of safe places to stop off if needed. The anchorage north of Rooney point we mentioned in previous video looks interesting too
😂 fun side of John peeping out
@@yvonneosullivan419 he’s starting to relax on camera finally

Great sail can’t wait till the next one, so relaxed, overalls not as bad as those around Anglesey but still very uncomfortable.
@@sailingsheriff3349 The over falls off Anglesey are seriously scary we nearly broached going into Holyhead ( never good but especially not with 3 small boys on board). Currently working on editing next episode currently down to 22 minutes from hours of footage. Let the super fine tuning begin
@ that is scary
Dam wind always on the nose!🤦♂️ looks like a great sail! The toasties looked great!
@@Thesailing_chef OH so scrumptious. A croqué monsieur on steroids 🤣🤣
I have never seen anyone on those famously sandy beaches. Mile after mile of empty sand...
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass We were sailing during a working week before school ended for summer holidays. 😂
Great video, good luck with the trip , diesel bug caused me some trouble but I’m sure you are well prepared with extra filters and hoses. I’m very interested in your solar set up , be sure to give a review later on how it worked out for you.
@@TheHappySailor-xg4pu Thanks. As you will see the solar system quite literally saved us and allowed us leave Dun Laoighaire (ok 2 hours later than planned ) and begin our journey south
Wow, thats a massive power pack. Thanks for the mention 😊 When we were in the UK marinas, ypu wouldn't believe the amount of people that would get in their biats and just start up the engine and leave, no maintenance whatsoever, it amazed us. Look forward to following your french adventure ⛵️🥰
@@SailingSVCordelia Greetings from Arzal in Southern Brittany. We’re here for 2 weeks checking on wave dancer and the jobs we’re getting done whilst on the hard. The amount of upgrade jobs that were done this year was unprecedented. Now John has retired (11th October was his last day) we’re going to have more time for wave dancer and sailing further.
It is good to see all the prep for your next adventure! Looking forward to seeing the sailing 👍
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass I’m pretty much there for the rough editing of the departure from Ireland. Including 2 new to us anchorages and close to shore sailing. Great view of a friend’s house from the sea. Did not know Chris had it in his family when I fell in love with it in 2009, only found out in 2017
Ooo Christmas, load of goodies there. I love the sentiment : everything in its place and a place for everything, I wish. When I eventually find the tools I need, they never go back where they should do and if they did I wouldn’t find them 🤠🤠
@@sailingsheriff3349 My dad’s motto . His garage looks like chaos but he knows what shelf/container something is in. Don’t worry picture perfect doesn’t last long, as soon as we moved into the boat it quickly becomes chaos. At least I have a system of kinda knowing where to find stuff. Was looking for silicone gun yesterday but it was moved from where I normally keep it so must have accidentally gone home to the garage 🤬 John had to climb down the ladder walk across the road to the chandler and buy new stuff
Literally would have been lost without the all powers solar system. You’ll see why in the next episode
Important upgrades to the comfort & safety equipment
@@johnosullivan9650 very true, great getting some jobs off the long finger list too.
Only just seen this notifications not working. You need a head cam or body cam. Anything like me you’ll take pictures of your feet or the sky never what you want to video🤠 great sailing though
Thanks for the tip
I don't think your reef lines are rigged correctly. They can't give you any leech tension the way you have them. Your leech must be flapping like mad in any blow. It shouldn't be tied to the cringe but simply run through it and down to and tied around the boom to a point directly below the reef point. Now when you tighten the reef the new clew will be both out hauled and down hauled, tightening the new foot and leech equally. This means you can flatten sail shape in a blow. Now, because you have downhaul your vang (and traveller if you have one) will actually have an effect on controlling the sail twist (not to mention reducing leech flap) that's limiting your speed through water. Sorry if I'm wrong. I hope this helps.
@@lubberwalker thank you for saying this. I shall talk with John about it, he does the sails, I’m on helm. Last time we used a different reef set up our main ripped many years ago. I think it was different to your description though. The Irish are notorious for not reefing sails when they should 🤣🤣
'''😂
I honestly didn’t think it was a good day for sailing judging by weather at home 50kms inland. I was pleasantly surprised
The docking system works well
@@yvonneosullivan2105 yes originally saw it on Patrick Laine then Salty lass channels. We had to improvise our docking procedure since moving to Dun laoighaire
The Commissioners of Irish Lights do the navigational marks and buoys up here in Northern Ireland as well. Looks like a fun night on the water.
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass interesting. I assumed that was under UK jurisdiction
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar - Ahhh.... assumptions... 😄There are a lot of "UK" things that simply do not happen in N Ireland. We could not even get them to send batteries over here. All the buoyage up here is clearly marked "cil".
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass makes sense total island has same system
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar - it is the Navigation Act of 1807 or some such... I guess it was "grandfathered" back in the day and just hung around after 1916/1922
Yo dudes great vide
@@jameshoey303 thanks James. Just home from France. Wave Dancer getting a facelift
Job well done. Your engine looks like mine, is it a 35hp? You are lucky, I’ve to do all that maintenance from above and rear. Impeller has to be replaced with the help of a mirror 😢. Have you haver changed your raw water pump?
@@pgpinto2000 thanks for your comment. 28hp yes luckily engine access is good.

Grand wee suntrap there. May 11th a fantastic day. ME in shorts happens very rarely
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar - it is not happening today, at least, not around here 😄
@SailingYachtSaltyLass lovely calm sunny morning working at the marina. After 4pm wind picked up ( just when sail was on deck whilst we fixed the creeping forward sailbag. Got lots of jobs finished before holiday starts next weekend
Omg, when was this filmed? You had no top on, surely wasn't 2024 😅🤣. Some great sailing shots. Seems to be a beautiful area 🥰⛵️
May 11th. Yeah weather was fantastic. Sailing in shorts rarely happens. Family has mentioned we should have a public health warning on video because John is topless🤣🤣. Ireland is gorgeous in good weather. We are lucky to see it from a different viewpoint
I love the deck dancing, thats a happy skipper
That’s the short version of what I saw 🤣🤣
I’m just happy he didn’t have fall overboard. Such a messer🤣
Massive thanks to Michael and Roisin for their lovely photos as they passed us by.
Unfortunately the northern lights were not as good as the night before
A year to the day we anchor as part of 2024 shakeout
Great you escaped and had the weather to do it with. Your engine is cleaner than my boat😩 Can you keep the calm seas and fair winds until the middle of June please as we will be there on the 2nd all being well. Have fun
Believe me Roy. Engine was just spruced up for season start. Have to change alternator from V belt to flat belt type as v belt getting chewed up. We figured might as well use up our spare v belt before changing. The boat itself is still a desperate mess, everything out of lazerette for eberspracher install. Still waiting for John to tidy ductwork out of the way so we can use it again.
Hopefully we toddle off on big adventures of summer end of June. Plan on Isles of Scilly 🤞
@@WavedancerWesterlyfulmar that sounds exciting
We were last there 11 years ago
😂😂the see no evil monkey was hilarious
We tie our sailbag to the outhaul's thimble and that stops it moving forward. Your boat is looking great and fantastic to see you both out on the water. It was a long off-season for everyone.
Ooh that’s a thought ❤ I just planned stitching across the back so that the end of boom track slug can’t shimmy behind the bag in the track. Our other upgrade to the sailbag backfires too. The new lazy jack loops were stitched across the pocket for the tension bars. Bad enough we were charged huge money for new zipper and 3 loops by the guy in the midlands without finding the job was budgied up
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look at the possibility of doing that instead. Might have to put a loop on as a tie on point
@@johnosullivan9650 - it never ceases to amaze me that some people never check their work. I know that when I stitch things I sometimes sew more bits together than I intend (that is why I get Gaynor to do all the sewing aboard). The canvas work does look good though and the boat looks very smart.
@beverleyportlock9680 sabre sails in Swansea did our sprayhood which we love. We didn’t think we had to double check our stackpack when we got it done by someone in the business 🤯
Love seeing the banter between you guys
Ah the craic is mighty
Maybe I should have said “the force is strong in this one “ considering the weekend that was in it 😂
So fantastic to finally get out of the marina after 10 months confined to port by bad weather, work and plenty of upgrades to the boat.
