My Name is Curtis Haaland. I've always loved art, knives, and working with my hands. All these things have been part of my life separately until I started this. Art is in my blood, my dad is a potter, my mom is an art teacher and photographer, and both my sisters are excellent artists themselves. When I found out about the craft of knife making it put all three of my passions together. I fell in love with the craft the first time I tried it at age 17 and have been doing it ever since. It's not hard doing this everyday when I have an overpowering passion to learn and grow. Every project is an opportunity to try something new and learn. When making these knives the priorities rank in this order: utility, ergonomics, and aesthetics. This channel is to give you a peek into my work and possibly help you in your own endeavors.
Making the Perfect Outdoorsman Knife - How to Make a Knife
Just finished this little integral bolster hunter with a walnut handle. I forged it from 1.25" W1 tool steel which you can get from online metals or McMaster Carr. I get my abrasives like belts and sandpaper from www.redlabelabrasives.com and the grinders I use are from brodbeckironworks.com .

Making a Tanto - Habaki

Hey everyone! Follow along as I make this habaki for a new Tanto that I am working on. To do this I am forging a piece of copper out and wrapping it around the blade and then soldering it together. This is a traditional piece of hardware you will find on ancient Japanese swords and knives and while my knife is not perfectly traditional, I think it pays homage to the blades of history and the Ja...

Forging a Damascus Short Sword - Burt Foster Collab Part 2

This is part 2 of the collaboration that I am doing with Burt Foster. Burt is the Master Smith that has had the largest influence in my current style and growth as a knife maker. Both in craft and friendship he has been extremely generous to me. This video shows the process of me forging my piece of Damascus that we forged in part 1 into a very large knife (or short sword. I reveal the Damascus...

Hey all! I had the AWESOME opportunity to start a collaborative project with Burt Foster (the maestersmith who I learned knife making from). This video follows the fun few days of trying to create two distinct billets of Damascus and try mixing them together to create a collaborative pattern. The overall goal is to make two blades in our two different styles from the same materials and create a...

👍👍👍👍👍
That is pretty badass
Why do "content creators" feel they need to do an introduction video like a Ted Talk? Just make the sheath and shut up. 😂 Just busting your ba!!s. Well done
😄 agreed. Looking back it makes me cringe. But you go through phases
Very good build and really good video! You made it enjoyable to watch, Thankyou 🙂
Dope AF results, @CurtisHaaland! Now it needs an equally dope sheath to complete the package!!
Did you ever make the tsuba?
I like it. I want 2. Lol
Step one: turn on your vacuum cleaner
Nice, but i do think tossing it at a target is way more fun of a test with an axe type weapon. Cool one though.
So did you heat it twice to temp, let it cool and then heat it a third time and then quemch in water?
Great work man!
Крутая работа👍 Балдею от таких ножей.
I want so much to learn what you are doing. wish you could explain how you are heat treating and at what temperatures and for how much time. I Subscribed anyway hoping you could make a remake of this video and put in descriptions for people like me to learn how to do this correctly . Your videos are great !
I haven’t seen the other video but I think you done a great job. But as a person outside looking in. I would look at ways to use thinner leather. The thickness is way thick for a lot of people and if it was thinner it would appeal to more customers. But still a great video.
Интегралы это очень красиво, но сложно
Agreed!
Beautiful handle, how did you get that finish on the walnut?
Thank you! It is a linseed oil finish
This is my new favorite crafting work channel
Thanks so much man!
It's VERY nice to dind a channel that doesn't try to turn these videos into an "asmr" thing. I cant watch those, and to many times they over speed the footage up.
Thanks! I enjoy more cinematic feels
Ive never seen laser engraving being done before. That was pretty freaking neat.
I really love your design! Especially the sculpted handles 👌 just awesome!
Thanks so much!
Aaaaah! It's not a blue gem!
Absolutely no shot that I wouldn’t screw up the finish of the knife while working on the handle😅 bold move!
😂
Rounding the back of your integral bolster, fantastic. First time I’ve seen anyone do this. Added so much to an absolutely beautiful piece.
Thank you so much! It makes for a comfortable grip
Beautiful knife love the design
Appreciate it!
Beautiful knife I would love to have one exactly like it!!?
@@ervintaylor6508 it will be available through the website this weekend
Curtis beautiful work as usuall you never cease to impress love evrything about that knife !!! Mark
Appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Was it inspred by Eric Markman? It looks suspiciously similar to his style…
@@thetschoni3813 I see what you mean but really it’s Jason Knight that inspired most of the modern handmade Knives you see out there. he is one of my mentors.
@@thetschoni3813 nothing new under the sun
@@CurtisHaaland i see:)
Beautiful design! Awesome knife! Great video!
Thanks so much!!!
I try not to watch and look at many other makers' knives because I feel like I start drawing what I was looking at 2 weeks ago. But I sure do like the style you have come up with. I really like your thin knife scale you do. I can see your mentors in the knives, and yet they are all you. Thanks for taking us along, beautiful job.
@@garetkonigsfeld2 thanks for the words! I totally agree. It’s easy to pick up others designs subconsciously.
Always great to see another video. Love your style and always impressed by how easy you make it look. I'd be so nervous to shape that handle post-blade finish lol. Just goes to show how confident you are in your skillset.
Thanks brother! It’s just about putting the hours in
Excellent work!!
Thanks so much!
A work of art!
Thank you!
Hey Curtis! Always nice seeing a video from you. Can you talk about the specific features that make this the ideal knife for the outdoors?
@@nahte123 thanks for the comment and question! I think when I say the “perfect outdoorsman knife” I just mean the perfect do all knife for those going out hiking/fishing/camping. It will serve well for a wide variety of tasks in those scenarios. Hope that makes sense!
what a gorgeous and badass lil piece....
Thanks!!
@@CurtisHaaland what is your IG ?
@ instagram.com/freehillblades?igsh=eTY5ZXcwbDFsODA5&
Stock is a bit too thick for me. Cool knife still.
@@jusme8060 if you don’t have a power hammer or press it can be difficult to break something down like that. Try .75” round. Sold give you a decent size blade and a lot easier to work by hand
Great knife! You got skills brother! How long how you been a maker?
Thanks! I started 11 years ago.
@ sweet only ten more years and I may be able to make somthing half as cool as that! Thanks for sharing your skills!
You can really upgrade your skills by asking questions and watching someone work who has been doing it a while. So you’re doing the right thing. See if there is anyone close enough to go see them work in person and if they’re willing to to let you shadow them and ask questions do it!
@@CurtisHaaland great advice! Thanks brother!
What is the blackening solution you're using?
It’s super blue
@CurtisHaaland thanks it seems to work really well and I really like the color your work is quite inspiring .
It’s hard to get a good consistent black finish. That’s why I use it primarily for tumbled finishes
Very cool knife and video
Thanks camille!
Slick little knife. What steel was it?
It’s W1 tool steel knife very
I always love the color-grading and cinematic feeling your videos have! Thank you for sharing this with us! 🙏 God bless
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
What voltage did you use?
What steel do you think this is ?
@@michaeldbhawker3556 not sure exactly but probably something like 1045
Man i with i had a power hammer. Though as a hobbyist, i couldn't justify that kind of a purchase.
Battle axe!
Hey Curtis, really have enjoyed seeing your growth since our Forged in Fire episode. You clearly would have been the winner that show if not for the unfortunate event. Best to you and your family. Brian
Amazing! Can you tell me how your setup for the machine (current)? I want to try this for a project. Thanks
I love the disc sander made out of a fan motor I new i saved that for a reason thank you.
What voltage?
I really like the combination of the hollow grind and the tanto point. Your knife is not a retro knife. It's a modern Japanese sword.
Shame that the handle is about 5 feet shorter than what is optimal
