Planting Switchgrass with NO Chemicals! Will this work??
Переглядів 8734 місяці тому
I'm running a trial with a Northern Switchgrass blend from WHS to see if I can establish a stand of switchgrass without using chemicals. I had an area along my food plot that needed screening that I had Winter Rye planted for a cover crop. I broadcast seeded the switchgrass into the standing Rye, then I came along with my 8' Goliath crimper and made two passes on the rye. This crimped the rye v...

VLOG #3 PROPERTY PERIMETER CLEARING
What was the spacing on the 6 year old silky willow hedge?
Double staggered rows. 4' spacing between Rows and 4' spacing between each shrub within a row. For a 100' line, you would need 50 cuttings.
will this do well in Indiana?
Depending on soil types, the silky willow does very well in Indiana. If you have sandier soils, then I would water them more often than if you had clay/loam soils that was able to hold moisture better.
How much sun do these need?
Partial to Full Sunlight will get you your best results and fastest growth rates. Now, I've planted them in areas with lots of tree competition, and they survived but didn't grow as fast as my willows planted in full sunlight. I would always try to plant the willows outside of a mature tree's drip line to allow maximum sunlight and rainfall. Thanks for watching-Seth
Can you take and plant cuttings in the fall??
We are still planting cuttings this past week and watering them in as we plant. Now, they have to be harvested prior to them leafing out in the spring. We keep our cuttings in our cooler that allows them to stay fresh until planting, even later in the growing season. I wouldn't wait much longer because of the risks of an early frost+unestablished root system= poor success rates of the new cuttings. Thanks for watching-Seth
What size will the trunk get in the hybrid and dappled willow?
The Hybrid Willow will get 3 main trunks with a 3-4' diameter. The dappled willow will produce lots of branches and have an 8-10' foot print. The trunk on the dappled willow will be 2-5'' in diameter at maturity.
@@big_rock_trees thanks so much for this video and your reply. Is there anything you can tell me that would help me determine which would be a better choice? I’m in zone 7a The run I’m hedging is 10’ and the other is 20’. I would consider dogwood also. I prefer something at least 12’ I’d like to be able to keep it tidy.. any thoughts?
@@ibizablonde if you are looking for a nice colorful hedge, I would plant a mix between red osier dogwood and dappled willow shrubs. They will max out around 12'' tall, but produce lots of leaves and branches. You could prune them to keep the hedge nice and tidy. The R.O.D. will have a vibrant red colored in the winter months, and the dappled willow will have bright pink leaves in the spring!
Can’t wait to see the outcome with the switch
How much water per Silky Willow shrub is recommended in case of a drought per week?
2-5 gallons per shrub per week if you are not receiving any rainfall. If you have sandier soils then I would water a little bit more to ensure those shrubs don't dry out. If you have heavier clay soils that hold water, then that 2-5 gallons per week will be just fine!
Something for the cone-tainer "seed-starter" sizes would be a great product too.....
6 footers really starting to leaf out. What time period do they really start branching out? Or do they spend may June putting down roots?
They will continue that first month to promote root growth. Usually after 3-4 weeks of growing, you will start to notice the limbs growing outwards!
@@big_rock_trees planting them in the tree tops or a hinge cut is a huge money saver. I also, made a rectangle out of pines and a small opening in middle planted in the trees and opening. Working as well as a fenced in area. Just little harder to control weeds.
That is a great idea using downed trees as a natural cage!
@big_rock_trees I did a habitat cut and mad a brush pile fence. Will email pics next time on property
Did you say 5" diameter rod?
5/8dia
Yes 5/8'' diameter rod for our more wide cuttings(hybrid poplar, hybrid willow) and then we like to use a 3/8'' diameter for our shrubs!
Best methods for watering cuttings without driptape?
I have used large 250 gallon water totes and hauled around with a skid steer. Smaller projects I like to use a large cooler with a hose on it and walk along with a UTV to water. Another option would be to fill up the cooler and then grab buckets of water from the tub and individually water the cuttings. The key to start watering earlier in the summer to prevent the cuttings from drying out. Once the cuttings are established, it would take a severe drought to kill them!
@@big_rock_trees appreciate the response. Keep up the great work
300 ft double staggered row of silky willow went in the ground yesterday! Hoping for good success!
Awesome John! Get water on those cuttings as needed and keep the weed pressure down throughout the first year! Send us some photos this fall!
My package is on way. Your videos are great. Going to put my 6ft willow in a clearcut in a cedar swamp. Use tops as cages
Great plan Travis! Send us some photos this fall!
My silky and hybrid willow go in tomorrow, hybrid poplar as well!!
Great idea. I put rocks on my plastic to hold it down as well (if any are available).
Rocks work great as well!
How tall is fence?
5' Cage--I have a video "Welded Wire Cages to Protect Shrubs" to give you more information!
I ordered the silky willow and hybrid willow for spring of 2024! I can't wait to get them and get them in the ground! love these positive videos of how well the do in wetter area.
Both the silky willow and hybrid willow will do great in lowland areas that hold moisture year round!
Did customers fence silky willows and hybrids or just hybrids?
The customer will be fencing just the hybrid willows. If you screen lines are closer together, then I would just surround both lines with the fencing so the deer can't nibble on the tips of the silky willows throughout the winter months. An example of surrounding long lines with electric is on our TN Installation Results-video. This shows both lines being protected at the same time.
How does that project look today?
I'm going to be heading back there hopefully this fall to grab some photos and videos of the 2nd year growth! Stay tuned-Seth
Perfect I'll be waiting to see results
Would you recommend using something like liquid fence on hybrid willows to help them establish and minimize deer and rabbit browsing if you couldn’t cage them?
I have tried some deer resistant sprays for the Hybrid Willow before and that has worked. The only issue is reapplying the chemicals because they grow so quickly that any growth needs to be sprayed otherwise the deer will nibble those new unsprayed shoots. If you live close to your hybrid willow trees, then reapplying the liquid fence would be easy, otherwise an electric fencing is another option that would keep deer off of the trees year round for the first couple growing seasons. Thanks-Seth
If I was to cage them: would you individually cage the shrubs or could I cage the whole line?
If you are planting a double staggered row, I would surround the entire line with a fence of some sort. We have used electric fence, snow fence, or heavy duty deer netting to keep deer off the trees at last the first couple growing seasons.
so the fabric stays the life of the plant? does it biodegrade?
You can do either or. I have left fabric in a silky willow line that is 6 years old. You will have to expand the fabric surrounding the stump over the years to allow enough room for the trunk/base of the shrub to expand properly! If you want to remove, I would wait until after 3-4 growing seasons before removing the fabric. The fabric will not biodegrade naturally.
@@big_rock_trees thanks for the update! I have silky, hybrid willow and hybrid poplar coming from you guys this season so i will plant with fabric. thanks again
Perfect, send us some photos this fall of your first year growth!
Does the fabric stay in place or do you cut it out around the willow and remove once they are established?

Glad it was helpful!
Hey wait a minute, what is that magical dewalt snippers you used to cut your wire?
@whatsnextgarage it is a Dewalt 20V Swivel Head Shear. Works great for cuttings the cages quickly!
@@big_rock_trees I have to see if Milwaukee makes one!! I cut tons of fence every spring I get new trees🥳
I'm about 1 hour south of Green Bay and this will be my first year using your willow and poplar cuttings. all of my cuttings will have to go into tree tubes otherwise the deer will never let them live. Getting close to planting season, can't wait
Awesome! Definitely protect the trees for 2-3 growing seasons because the deer love to nibble on the new shoots!
Out of curiosity, what is the land owner going to do with that middle section? Just let it go and what pops up is good? I dont suspect once the willows get up that much will grow there, especially anything to compete with the willows. That gap may be very beneficial. Now he needs some evergreen options sprinkled in there to help break up more over time and in the dead of winter.
Landowner was going to let it naturally grow up with grasses because by year 3 the trees and shrubs will be overtaking the area!
Well done. Plus we can re-use the fence when the plants are big enough.
Yes that will be the plan in a couple years!
Can you plant hybrid willow close together to limit height after 5 or 6 yrs or would it be best to get top every few years in spring
I would plant the hybrid willow normal spacing and then cut the tops off of them at year 5!
How am I just finding out that you guys have awesome videos that completely cover your trees and shrubs in depth. Well done, Seth.
Appreciate the feedback, gonna have to hook you guys up with some cuttings!
You like 8-9 inches in for ROD cuttings . How many nodes you getting below and above the ground with that depth ❓
We will plant 12'' cuttings at 8-9'' deep with 2-3 buds exposed. With 2' cuttings, we plant them 16-18'' deep exposing 4-6 buds!-Seth
@@big_rock_trees thanks 👨🏻👍🏼
Excellent videos! Great content thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Grow tube?
We prefer to use a cage or fencing if protecting a long line. The hybrid willow wants to produce 3 main trunks compared to the hybrid poplar, and we have found that a grow tube will restrict the growth and not allow the tree to grow properly. Leading to less leaves and branches and creating a less-dense screen. The cheapest option we have found for long screen lines is 2-3 strands of electric fencing!-Seth
I have a 100 gallon water tank and about 150’ of a willow, double staggered, row I am putting in this spring. Do you think this setup would work well with the 100 gallon tank gravity feeding the system?
Yes absolutely! We have used 250 gallon tanks to water hundreds of feet at one time and works great. I would place the tank at the highest point of the screen line to maximize water flow via gravity!-Seth
@@big_rock_trees perfect! Thank you. Luckily where I am planting it slopes down from the middle of my field to the field edge. It’s not a huge slope but it should be enough to keep it flowing down!
It doesn't take much slope for the drip tape to work, but the more elevation the better!
What kinda growth out of 5 foot hybrids???
For our 6' cuttings, you can expect at least 3-5' of growth with no deer browse and good summer rainfall just like the customer had down in TN!
What’s the best way to store cuttings taken now until I can plant them in spring?
They can be stored in a fridge until time of planting in a plastic bag with moisture! I would try to harvest cuttings as close to planting time as possible for best results.
Great video. Those are some beautiful shrubs. I've planted all but the yellow twig.
Yes they are!
Wonder what it looks like now?
Trying to plan a trip back down to the project to see the results. My guess is the willows and poplar will be pushing 20'+!
Hi Tom. Any recommendations for where to buy and installing drip lines?
@boyceball we purchase our drip lines from a local garden center. The products name is Aqua-Traxx and has emitters every foot. Works great to water long lines from a central location. We will have a video soon to explain the drip lines-Stay tuned! Seth
I’m in west central Arkansas. Planting zone 7b. Would this grow here? And how long would I expect to hold foliage for stand access?
All the cuttings will grow great in Arkansas. The willows will hold their leaves well into November. Typically in WI, we see the hybrid willow and silky willow start dropping around the week of gun season(Thanksgiving Weekend). For southern states, they will hold their leaves longer into the fall.
I like that a lot. This is what I had planned for my screen this year. I want it to be both functional and colorful. I plan to do op-367, dappled, red osier, yellow twig maybe some hybrid willow and elderberry.
Do the silky willow need to be fenced?
@MichOutdoors we don't typically protect the silky willow shrubs. But since the customer was protecting the hybrid willow trees we recommended protecting everything since it only costed him an extra 10' of fencing to surround everything! If you have any other questions feel free to email me at tom@bigrocktrees.com -Thanks Seth
@big_rock_trees thanks for the response. Keep up the great work!
Sure like to know what part of Tn got good rain over the summer. I was dry as heck in middle Tn.
Just south of Nashville. Customer got lucky but had the drip line set up just in case!
Solid work sir. The bar you're using to drive a pilot hole for the cutting...purchased or hand made? Any suggestion on the diameter of the hole that will best fit most 12" cuttings?
We had them custom made by a local fabricator. We run two diameters for our dibble bars for 12'' cuttings. 1/2'' and 3/4'' and if the cutting is slightly larger than 3/4'' diameter then I will take the rod and ream the hole slightly to fit the larger cutting! Rebar is pretty standard for customers, but I am trying to work with the local fabricator to see if we could produce more dibble bars to sell! I will keep you updated-Seth
Are these planted cultivars? Usually when i see these out in the wild most of the bark is a standard brown, and the new shoots are a darker red. Ive never seen red that vibrant except for in cultivars in nurseries or landscaping
Hi Josh, the reason they are so red is because these are new 1-2 year growth. Once the stems/base are reaching years 4-5 they start turning brown on the bark and lose their vibrant colors. If you were to find a young ROD or Silky Dogwood in the wild, then you will see the fresh red colors especially in the winter dormant months! If they are a younger shrub that has darker red stems, they might be Silky Dogwood as they don't show a true red color compared to the Red Osier Dogwood. A new video is dropping next week explaining a colorful screen line using ROD as a "Red Screen". Stay tuned and thanks for watching!-Seth
@@big_rock_trees oh neat, I didn't know this! I'm gonna subscribe just to catch that video, thanks!
You just intrigued me with this setup. What's the reasoning between the gap between the matting rows? I am doing mine this spring and may opt to put that 5' gap for my mower and then create that extra room for roots and the canopy. I just want to make sure my screen is nice and thick
Hi George, two major reasons that the customer wanted the gap in-between the two rows. 1)Allowed them to mow long each side to suppress the surrounding grasses and allow maximum sunlight. 2)More space for the trees and shrubs to grow their root systems. We have found that a gap between the two rows will allow the trees/shrubs to reach taller heights compared to tighter spacings. Thanks for watching!-Seth
Are you ever concerned the black fabric will absorb too much heat and scorch the trees, especially in Southern climates?
Hi Jason, we have had customer feedback from southern states that have found great success from using the black x-cell woven fabric. It won't deteriorate quickly like other products in full sunlight areas. We recommend creating a 3''x3'' X-mark in the fabric when planting cuttings. This will allow enough room for the cutting to grow properly and let the ground breathe beneath the fabric. You don't want to create too small of a pilot hole in the fabric otherwise the fabric will waft, in the wind, on the cuttings and kill them! Thanks for watching!-Seth
i have an opportunity to get some cuttings in a sea of red - my question is it better to cut all the limbs off like your cuttings or leave them. I assume you cut them for packaging & shipping. Also is longer better? - i can get some 5'. Can I take the whole plant (roots and all) - thanks for the help
I would cut all limbs off of the new cutting because there is no established root system yet and those existing limbs draw a lot of energy. We typically plant 2-3' cuttings in swampy areas to get some sunlight and make good ground contact. We have found that anything larger doesn't perform as well as the shorter cuttings. You can also unroot a whole plant and transplant it in the spring. I would water it heavily after planting to stop the root system from drying out! Thanks for watching!-Seth
Do these grow in west Texas?
Yes, In lowland swampy areas close to stream and rivers. Red Osier Dogwood love moisture/water so they need to be planted close to water sources otherwise they will dry up and die quickly!
Thanks for the info👌🏼
How far apart do you suggest planting these cuttings? If planting more that 25 but don't have cages for that many, any suggestions on how to plant and not let the deer eat them down to the ground right away?
8'-10' apart is good spacing to allow them enough room to grow properly. The ones that don't have cages, use tree limbs to create a natural cage from the deer. The deer might still find the shrub but won't be able to eat it down to the dirt with the tree limbs in the way.
Do you fence off these bigger cuttings???
Yes we would fence in longer cuttings as the deer love to browse/rub on the hybrid poplar and hybrid willow trees! The advantage of using a 6' cutting is to get height quicker compared to a 12'' or 2' cutting. If you have any other questions let me know!
