Disco is distinctly gorgeous! Is her coat brindle or merle? I'm having trouble deciding haha. Pretty pup distraction aside I really appreciate this video and how you teach the lesson so clearly. I want to train my future dog for hiking so good leash skills will be an absolute must! Also, there's just something about a well mannered dog on a leash; I think it really shows that you are a responsible pup parent when your dog leashes nicely.❤
Thank you! Glad that you appreciated the video. I hike with my crew frequently. With multiple dogs, it's extra important to me that they have nice leash manners! Disco is brindle, but a particularly flashy brindle. She's registered as an Irish marked fawn brindle. Silken windhounds actually do not come in merle.
@@wildmeadow_windhounds9004 Oh! That is so pretty, I had no idea that they didn't come in merle, I guess the merle gene must not have been present in the sheltie stock used in the breed creation. Thank you sooo much for answering my question, I really appreciate it. ❤️
I love this so much; I just learned about this breed and they seem like they MIGHT be the perfect adventure buddy for a hiking artist/writer whose cats often neglect her in the cuddling department. ❤️

Cool vid! I'm considering this breed. I trail run in the woods for about 5 miles a couple of time a week. I run it at a pretty slow pace of 12 to 15 minutes per mile. Heard these dogs are more sprinters than endurance athletes. Do you think a Windhound would enjoy that type of trail run?
Thank you for the helpful video! My family is considering getting a puppy sometime in the next year, so I am doing my research. I really like the whippets based on their temperament and exercise needs. It seems like the silken windhounds might be similar to the whippets in that respect, but there is not a lot of information about them since they are such a new breed. Are you able to comment on your experience? How much exercise do you think your SW needs daily in terms of minutes/hours? Any observations you can provide are really appreciated - Thanks again!!
My wife and I are getting a silken wind hound in a few months! I’m hearing a lot of contradictory stuff regarding silkens off leash. Some people say they’re great off leash and don’t want to stray too far from you, and others say you must never let them off leash due their “high prey drive”. Do you have any thoughts on this? Is this a “depends on the dog” type of thing? Thanks!
Congratulations! Which breeder are you getting your puppy from? The off leash thing is very much a risk vs. benefit decision you have to make for yourself and your dog. There's a big group of us in OH that hike off leash with silkens, and the dogs get a lot out of it. I think a lot of old school sighthound people are just not comfortable with off leash, and that's OK too. Silkens are typically pretty easy to train to recall (they're "biddable" sighthounds) and tend to stay close unless zooming or pursuing prey, unlike some sighthound breeds who naturally range and are more independent. When they run, though, they run fast and far. Mine all have excellent recall that I regularly and heavily reinforce but also strong prey drive. We stay well away from roads for that reason, and when we hike off leash, I chose locations carefully and they wear Garmin GPS collars just in case they range out of sight.

The only reinforced my dog care about when she meet other dogs, is getting to those dogs. Treats and everything else is simply blocked out from her brain the moment she see another dog, and she'll throw herself towards them while barking madly. How would you use positive reinforcement on that? 🤔

Exactly why I am switching back from herding breeds to sighthounds- I like an off switch, and enough brains to still be fun! Love you videos I’m getting really excited to bring home a puppy in a couple of weeks and these videos are making me even more excited!

Really cool, I could never get my silken to fetch consistently. He plays the classic get to the ball then the human gets to pick it up and throw it.
Try initially running away from him when he has the ball, then engaging him in a little tug with it (but letting him win) when you get it back. I also think it helps, when training fetch, to always end the game before they get tired or bored, and put the ball away after. That way they're excited to see the ball and resume the game next time.
@@wildmeadow_windhounds9004 Thanks, I definitely will give the run away then tug thing a try. I was spoiled because the first one I had actively played keep away with a ChuckIt Frisbee and that was super fun.
@@michaelmcalpine2891 Or, if your pup isn't interested in fetch, try making a flirt pole. Most silkens go crazy for the chase games.
I love Flynn's colour. Is it considered a red coat? is it also common for ears to be up on Windhounds? I am interested in the breed for my first dog.
By the way, I think the breed would be wonderful as a first dog as long as you meet some and are sure sighthounds (and silkens specifically) are right for you!

Do silken windhounds need a certain type of harness or is it just helpful
Are they only food motivated? Do they like praise?
Mine are motivated by food, praise, and play. I don't know if you're familiar with sighthounds, but they typically require higher value rewards, a higher rate of reward, and shorter training sessions than, say, herders or retrievers.
@@wildmeadow_windhounds9004 higher value as in treats? I train my cat basic commands as you would a dog with treats. I am not familiar with owning a dog but I thought it was possible to train a dog without using treats. I did research on dogs as well as sight hounds specifically. I am under the impression their attitude towards training is like a cat almost. They get bored quickly and need sometime really tempting to motivate. But I have also heard some people have silkens the opposite of that.

Are silken windhounds very active breed?
Like many sighthounds, they are energetic in short spurts. They typically have good off switches indoors but enough on to do activities like hiking, dog sports, etc. They are a lot less "busy" than herding breeds.
how easy would you say it is to train silkens? videos always make training look so easy and fast but they never mention really how long it took the puppy to get so good
If I were comparing to all breeds, I'd say silkens are easy to teach the basics (housebreaking, leash walking, manners) and moderately easy to train in dog sports. They are biddable, esp. for sighthounds, but don't have the focus and training drive of a herding breed and can shut down easily if discouraged. Mine do REALLY well with short, upbeat training sessions. The sable dude in the video is a lot of fun to work with. We do rally, tricks, a little agility, and just started freestyle. And he's the chillest pet in the world to live with. Hope that helps!

@@wildmeadow_windhounds9004 I know your comment is a year old, but yeah I have been thinking about one day getting myself one, especially since they sound beginner-friendly for training as long as you stay positive. How expensive are they though, they seem pretty exotic?

We have a Border Aussie, too, and she is a fantastic dog!
