Repivoting a Center Wheel
Some may rightly ask why go through the effort of doing such a repair. I can think of a couple of reasons. Firstly, for the educational value to those who watch this video. Secondly, as practice, so when a more valuable piece comes in for repair, you already know the steps needed to make it work again. But primarily, to demonstrate to my students that it is rarely an issue of IF something can be repaired or not. It is an issue of having the skills to do the repairs. Having and honing the skills. I also want my students too keep moving forward on their projects instead of stopping because their skills are yet to be developed to fix their own mistakes.

Removing broken screw from a barrel arbor

This mainspring barrel arbor belongs to a Langendorf 1 ladies watch. The diameter of the drill was .50mm. You can see that the center was not perfect, and the drill wobbled a bit. This is bad form, worthy of critique, but the drill was small enough that I did not cut into the threads at all, so it worked out. Thanks for watching The video referenced about making a drill bit. ua-cam.com/video/jg...
Stem, winding pinion, crown wheel slippage
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
This is a simple technique I use sometimes for average quality watches. Making a stem is simple enough, but sometimes that isn't the only problem. This trick eliminates the need for more expensive gear cutting of the crown wheel & winding pinion. I've had these pictures and video footage for a year and a half and just now have edited this to present to you. Sorry for the lack of videos lately. ...

In retrospect, I could have made a new escape wheel out of steel and not had the problems I had with the brass I tried. Also in the last two clips if you notice a silver color on a couple escape wheel teeth, it's because the wheel was originally plated nickel. It's not the residual of sold...

1. Sorry for the shakiness and jerkyness of the first part of this video. Neither my camera holder nor the cabinet on which my lathe sits is very steady. This makes the video footage at time seem shaky. 2. You'll note in the last clip that while the gears work together, they are not well matched. They work because the pinion is driving the wheel. If the wheel was driving the pinion, it would no...

Wow, this is a goldmine of useful information, thanks for posting this. One question, when you were correcting the 'out of flat' issue at 14:01 by grabbing with two tweezers you mention to "grasp with the tweezers and bend'. I'm not clear on what type of bend you are doing, how you are moving the tweezers. You are grabbing the hairspring with your left and right hand tweezers and in relation to the your left tweezer, the hairspring will want to be bent downwards to bring that part of the hairspring after the tweezers down as it is currently tilted upwards. Are you holding your right tweezer steady while pushing downwards with the left tweezer?

Thanks for this interesting video! When you drill, are you hand holding the pivot drill in a pin vise? If so, how do you ensure that the drilled hole is perpendicular? I've seen another technique using a hollow handle pin vise slipped over the tailstock spindle to try and keep it steady.

Given the angle of attack of the contrate gear on the pinion I would expect to not be as smooth as the more common wheel gear to pinion action.

At 14 minutes I'm uncertain what actions are being taken with both sets of tweezers. Are you essentially gripping with both and rotating the opposite ends of the tweezers downwards to stretch the upper portion of the hairspring to bring about flatness?

10:30 To state it perhaps more balanced, if you find the point where there is the least and most deviation and look 90 degrees between them, you ought to be able, by careful inspection, see a point at which the deviation begins and perhaps see a flat or a clear angular bend, helping you to know exactly where to make your correction. You stated the best philosophy to use to approach repairs, no matter how complicated. First, make sure it is untangled (because it can be both bent and tangled. Then start at the center and make sure it is in round. No matter how many other issues there are, if it isn't in round, you won't be able to see them. So start one loop at a time and make it purdy. Then go back and work on making it flat. Then, lastly, address the final section where it must pass through the regulator and attach to the balance wheel. Step by step, one at a time, with patience and care, and you will end up with either a fully functioning hairspring or two hairsprings, in which case, you don't have to worry about straightening it anymore! 😅 I will also say that, because of the importance of a properly oscillating hairspring to the function of a watch or clock, it is worth taking the time to be something of a perfectionist as you do the work. If it ain't right, even if it works, there's no way it will stay in beat. As for the picks, it occurs to me that reshaping a set of dental picks would be easy enough and give a nice, touch working surface.

Wow. I just did my first disassemble and reassemble of a movement. I had trouble with the balance and messed up the hairspring, even though everything else went perfectly. I attempted to correct the hairspring under a microscope, but made it worse. This information is valuable, and I'll keep it all and attempt it again using this video as the hairspring is not near as bad as the one you awesomely corrected at the end. Thanks!
