Nice video it brought back fond memories. As children Exchange Station was always our starting point for summer days out to Southport in the late 50s and 60s before my dad had a car. At the end of the 60s when I started my working life as an apprentice at a small engineering firm based in Upper Milk Street. As the newbie you would be sent out at around 12 o’clock to get the chips for everyone from “The Beanshoot” chippy just opposite Exchange Station. To make this chore more interesting I always used to cut through from Pall Mall through Exchange Station and have a quick browse at the news stand there and once a week buy my copy of “Melody Maker”. I left Liverpool in 1980, it really is amazing to see how its all gone.
@GroveDave thanks for sharing your memories. It's sad that it's gone now. Stations like Exchange seemed like they would be there forever. But as we know times change, not always for the better. Liverpool is a very different city now
BRITISH TOY TRAIN SET SHOWS - LOOK CHILDISH ALONGSIDE PROFESSIONAL EUROPEAN EXHIBITIONS ! Unreal ! Having just been to the Friedrichshafen exhibition in Southern Germany, where every layout (virtually all club layouts) were professional, and many were very large at over 40ft. Its terrifying to see how British Model railway shows have so quickly degenerated into nothing more than Childish "Toy train set shows", like this one in Warrington. Where clearly no one seems to understand signalling, and certainly not catenary, or what the real railway outside actually looks like. Indeed British modellers don't even seem to understand how to use DCC !!!
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587 these sorts of small shows are generally to encourage newcomers into the hobby. Many are put off starting in railway modelling due to being faced with criticism of their efforts by "professional" modellers. These sorts of rivet counting individuals represent the worst of the hobby. Anyone should be able to build whatever they want. Be it totally inaccurate loop with trains running a scale 300mph . To a highly detailed prototype of a particular location. I have been to large shows where layouts are built to high standards, but the average modellers can build whatever they like with whatever skills they have.
Thankyou, a brilliant video which brings back so many memories, as working on the Link was my first job after leaving college. The new tunnel, to the left at 18.14 was in hard rock so was blasted a metre at a time. Before each blast, the tunnel had to be checked to make sure no-one was in it, including on top of the concrete roof. As I was on top of it, they set the charge off! I was shaken, deafened and choking. They thought it was a huge joke. But they were a great bunch of blokes really, and of course I was fair game, first job etc. That was in the days when safety was in your head, and not entrusted to a flourescent jacket. Happy days.
@davenoble1207 it's a shame that part of the project was cancelled. We would have had a much better network if it went ahead. You & your colleagues did some great engineering on the loop link project
Very nice layout. I do like some of the models in the layout.
@@Andrewjg_89 some very talented model makers. Wish my efforts were as good
In St Helens about 1980 you would see Leyland Nationals from Merseyside PTE, Widnes, Lancashire United, Ribble, Crosville, and Greater Manchester PTE from Wigan.
They were a very popular model
Sorry to have missed it this year, thanks a lot for sharing 👍
@@Shelfandtabletoplayouts00gauge it was a good show , shame you missed it was very enjoyable

@andrewrice6596 yes I have to admire the talents of the builders. Wish my efforts were as good
Thank goodness one Bristol KSW6B from Crosville has survived it is a real treasure.
It's good to see. The survival of vintage buses is down to the dedication of the owners who keep these veterans going
Thanks for this. We used to use Exchange Street going out to Ainsdale and Southport when I was a kid in the early 70's, so it's nice to see the history of a long gone gem.
@@DaveWilliams-c9g cheers. A shame it's gone. It could have been repurposed rather than bulldozed
What's the distance of the loop line?
@@PindarMOD 3.2 km or 2 miles.
I remember the Birkenhead & District Bus, they were a short lived Company and not to be confused with Birkenhead Bus Company that ran until being absorbed into the MPTE (Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive) in the 1970s; the Birkenhead & District Bus ran in the 1990s.
@@gburns671 yes part of the bus wars period. Interesting times for enthusiasts but frustrating times for passengers.
@@Merseywail Yes it was, it was nice seeing that bus in the film though.

The Cleveland transit Volvo Olympian to me is one of the best in show she looks superb Hope all is well Mark 😊😊
Yes nice bus .last saw it at the Shildon rally in 2022. All the buses looked good at Skipton. A credit to their owners
@@Merseywailso true they all looked museum quality mate I hope with this switch to zero emission we still can se these machines in action imagine an electric Routemaster I bet someone is planning it for the day we have to switch
@marksinthehouse1968 that's a worrying thought. The old vehicles might be able to run but will anyone still be producing fuel. If all old vehicles could be converted to electric somehow, it wouldn't be the same though.
Cool 😊
@@LucasSarawansky a fair bit of hard work has gone into this do far. It's getting there.
Great day out shame the trams were missing but there was plenty to keep one busy looking at the vehicles

Lovely video, thank you. Nice to see them all together especially the Bristol RE in National livery and KG147, so pleased to see it in fine fettle.

Vintage buses 👍
Oh and by the way as you can closely see in the wide Picture above the letters that is what I'm writing about, can you also repaint all of them in the exact same Colour Patterns But Repaint most of these Buses in the exact same Blue Triangle Pale Red Colour Patterns and that will also would be the exact same Colour Patterns but leave the rest of the other exact same Pattern Colours for the rest of those 4 Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Transmission Buses so they could have most of those professional opportunities to Replace All of the Arriva Buses in North London for all of us Different Colour Patterns Blue Triangle Bus fans out there?
I have no idea what you are trying to say. Can you rephrase it with a couple of sentences please
16:13 - the distinctive hum of the train leaving the station. When I hear that I can imagine myself back at Central Station waiting for the train. BTW: I always remember lots of walking at Central (possibly also at Moorfields) in order to get to the Lime Street platform and then waiting for the train. I decided it was usually faster for me to exit Central Station and walk the short distance to Lime Street.
@@expatexpat6531 although part the reason for the loop was to make interchange easy, most prefer to walk to lime Street from central . Transfer via Moorfields requires going down two escalators and one passage way . Then at lime up two escalators & another passage way . The hum of the 507s & 508s has now been replaced by the whine of the 777s. I remember the deep hum, roar and groan of the 503s and 502s
Very interesting video. Exchange Station was the one I used from Formby when coming into Liverpool in the early 70s. I loved the grandeur of the station. I remember a clothes shop with a narrow frontage on the right as you came down to the main exit. The shop sold "loons" - the first time I had heard of these extra-wide flares. BTW: I don't think you mentioned the Exchange Hotel at the front, where Siegfried Sassoon attended a disciplinary hearing about his letter to his commanding officer condemning the war.
@expatexpat6531 no I didn't mention the hotel. It was one of my earlier videos so not really up to standard. Having said that am still learning. Glad you found it interesting despite its shortcomings
I saw my self
@@paukastell7210 that's exactly what I look for in other videos, to see ii can spot myself. I like to include visitors. I see many other videos of days like this & it looks like there's no one there. As they spend ages trying to avoid people.
Probably went on that Stockport bus in the 60's. 92 to Hazel Grove. 1/3 from Manchester
@davidsumner4335 been on it a few times in preservation but doubt I would have in service though
Skyscrapers and orange buses what a great combo ,SELNEC/GMPTE was one of my fav fleets with its neat northern counties bodywork I mean that Olympian and metrobus looked awesome ,when LT chose NC to body it’s trial dominators I was well pleased to me after the AN style body NC was in my top 5 ,can you answer me this were the Salford Mancunians delivered in green and white or red and white please ,Shame the new transport for Manchester chose yellow not orange 😊,a great video mate ,also driven NC Olympians and the ones I drove felt well built I envy you man driving the example in your video 😊😊 All the best Mark 😊😊
@marksinthehouse1968 can't say I remember them in green & white to be honest. The SELNEC GMPTE fleets were very well suited for their role & you can see the ancestry. Not too keen on the Bee yellow livery. A two tone such livery such as Wallasey no1 has would work better . But they like to keep it simple. Yellow seems to be what Merseyside is going to get to when franchising comes in. I would much preferred the GMPTE & MPTE liverys had returned
I was at that event and it was such a lovely day out. Great museum!
I remember riding on those RIBBLE buses ( L1 L2, & L3 routes. & I even got to change the destination on the front of one of them. ( I had to go upstairs to do it) & even drove one of their single double door deckers, aswell. Those was the days. Nice to see them out & about again these yesteryear buses. & as usual I find out well after the event when they have already been out & about So, I completely miss them.
@Thestig-en6gp yes I well remember the ribble buses on the L routes. I also had them on the 57 58 & 59 routes where I used to live. This particular day was a members day so wouldn't have been advertised except to members
I want to go on these Journeys
@@Ste2023 to go to this particular event you have to be a member of the North West vehicle restoration Trust. But there are other events open to all throughout the year. Nice video. Gives a good coverage of all the great layouts that were at the show!
Thanks I was manning one of the stalls at the show so didn't get many chances to film
You sure the class 502 had an air whistle you checked the diagram yet friend
@buddmetroliner200gaming3 not yet other things going on at moment
@@Merseywail okay then basically why did the merseyrail electric trains had windows on both ends I thought they had controls on both ends
@buddmetroliner200gaming3 not quite sure what you mean. The 502s when in operation on a service will have to have had a driving cab at each end of the consist. That so for example two 3 car serlts can join & make six car set The 502s were unusual as some two car sets only had a driving motor & middle trailer. The centre trailer of the 502s had a shunters window with bell code equipment to aid in couplings
@@Merseywail I'm talking about the mersey railway electric units if all their carriages had controls on each end
@buddmetroliner200gaming3 right finally dug out my booklet of mersey railway electric stock. Whilst they had windows at both ends , the driving motor coaches only had one drivers cab at one end only. The non powered coaches also had windows at the end but no driving controls
I once watched a YT of an enormous model of Lime Street Sration set in the late 1960s judging by the buildings where the plateau is now. Where is that model kept?
@uingaeoc3905 I know the one you mean. It was a brilliant layout. I've not seen it on display at exhibitions for a few years now. I hope it exists still somewhere though.
Approx 7.30 mins. I returned home to Liverpool from Brighton 5 days ago after 30 years... So was truly freaked to see a bus today at Penny Lane Liverpool going from Brighton via Lewes to Uckfield. That was my bus route to work. Genually thought I was tripping! Had to dig to find this on net but thank you for what you do. Its still called the Regency route but its the 28/29 today. 😂
@stepho1815 yes there was a vintage bus running day today in Liverpool
Thanks for that. Guess the universe is showing me I did the right thing coming home. 😊
I know I used the station in 1974, but was too interested in my then girlfriend to notice much about it. We may have used it again in 1975 when we were married. Didn't go to Liverpool for a hile after that and it was closed when I later wnet back for a visit.
@@brianfretwell3886 whilst it was loosing passengers & extending to central made sense it's a shame the station building wasn't retained. It would have made a great venue for undercover events.
