Simona's recovery from severe dysautonomia, insomnia, and C-PTSD
Simona Irwin shares her recovery and transformation story from severe dysautonomia, very severe insomnia, and complex PTSD. She provides insights for how PTSD can show up in complex chronic illness. She provides a template for working with all types of chronic symptoms. TIMESTAMPS below:
TIMESTAMPS:
0:01 Intro
1:13 Life before her perfect storm.
2:26 The final straw, what was compounding, and what was there from childhood.
2:58 Initial symptoms after medication.
4:13 What were her key symptoms as this didn't go away. Her heart rate at night was THIS high. I acknowledge overlap with ME/CFS.
6:03 Did she know this was her nervous system? Her health crisis 20 years prior. Her experience getting tests this time.
6:51 This is what her naturopathic doctor told her. WOW.
8:45 However, she still did this and this.
9:08 The FIRST brain retraining program she started with, DNRS. What helped. What DIDN'T.
12:46 The DARE response method, a game changer at the time.
15:50 The analogy she used for her symptoms / extreme sensitivities when describing it to others
17:17 Discovering Dr. Cathleen King & Primal Trust. The way it made her feel. She didn't want to go back.
19:03 More details on her self exploration & primal trust journey.
20:02 Key epiphanies from Primal Trust
21:42 Disclaimer - not meant to be self blame. These are automatic responses.
23:56 What this work does. Working with natural responses.
24:39 Recap and timeline
25:09 How PTSD and complex PTSD can show up in chronic complex illness journey
25:42 Simona goes into trauma from childhood and ACE scores
27:22 Someone without trauma may have dealt with the reaction like this. But this is how her nervous system related to it.
29:03 How the nervous system plays a huge role. Her opinion and experience on trauma and chronic illness. (Note: Nothing is medical advice. I invite all types of guests with different views.)
30:26 Realizing her brain was doing this. The 3 steps she took to address symptoms (a unique approach different than traditional brain retraining). How the tanglement of trauma and chronic illness started to unravel.
32:08 Liz recaps what Simona says.
32:24 Fear vs true intuition
34:01 Discovering the good intentions of protector 'parts'.
34:58 What are 'parts' and how can we work with them. A different and inclusive approach to brain retraining.
38:27 The difference between brain retraining and ignoring body to push through. The analogy Simona uses.
39:37 Choosing values over symptoms, while not pushing past limits. What that actually looked like for Simona.
41:36 At the end of the day, we don't want this.
42:08 Self compassion for the symptom of chronic fatigue (we both realize ME/CFS is way more than fatigue, but this was just an example). Simona makes a really powerful statement. Why I think this is so powerful.
43:43 Sometimes it's not good. Sometimes were in it. Honoring that. Where we can empower ourselves.
44:43 The benefit of community
45:45 I talk about how my audience primarily is recovering from ME/CFS, POTS, PEM, chronic fatigue syndrome. And ask for advise for people dealing with these conditions, based on her experiences.
46:10 Simona promise a template/algorithm that is applicable to all these conditions for bringing our nervous system to a new state. Such powerful wisdom.
49:38 The second piece Simona encourages people to explore.
50:22 Tools parents can start applying today going through complex chronic illness, PTSD, etc.
54:26 How Simona is helping others
55:58 Simona's POWERFUL final words of wisdom.
57:41 Parting words and goodbyes
OVERVIEW:
Simona Irwin was an executive in the organic food industry and busy mom when a reaction to a medication triggered very severe insomnia, severe dyautonomia (autonomic nervous system dysfunction), severe sensitivities, and a reemergence of complex PTSD (C-PTSD) stemming from childhood. She is now a coach and mentor in Primal Trust, a trauma-informed nervous system regulation program created by Dr. Cathleen King.

I invited Simona on my channel because I hadn't yet done a deep dive on C-PTSD, and I'm so glad I did because her wisdom is truly extraordinary. Listening to your parents yell every single day, I know what that’s like I lived it is very traumatic to a child a teenager or young adult.
Beautiful woman, beautiful healing underneath an amazing rainbow! Wow 👏bravo
The stressors cause high cortisol which causes adrenal fatigue. Then comes gut, mito and nervous system issues. Nutrient and electrolytes deficiencies. Systemic inflammation. Then the immune system over reacts which causes rash, etc. What saved me is an anti-inflammatory diet, supplementation and eliminating all stress until I got better. It took my body 2-3 months for the symptom to go away.
Modesta Drive
You are the cutest person
Please let me understand something, we shouldn't do the shoe maker protocol or other mold protocols and only focus on the nervous system? So, there is no need for binders or cholesteramine? I heard different views and it is very confusing. In the shoe maker world, they can you can't heal unkess u move out from the moldy place, take medications to detox ect.

What a positive interview! Thanks for sharing! 😁
I tried mickeltherapy and it made me a lot worse, i feel sorry for anyone who goes through that therapy.
Ok. But how do you stop being afraid of the fear. When your brain reads fear as a massive threat and so the fear feeds and amplifies fear. And so you feel utterly terrified ALL the time??
Thankyou so much for sharing this with us liz it was awesome ❤ do you suggest just visualizing something we want /how we want to bein the future or do like a quick visualizing of a past good experience from when we were welll to get the feelings up and then move to the future visualizing ? 🙏❤️ also just wondering how often did you do these during the day and if whenypu are practicing normallyon your own, do you describeit outloud usuallyor was this just for filming purposes🙏🌞? Thank you so much 🌞

I've watched half of this so far & already, SO MANY things she described are identical to my experience. The way (after getting to the point where you KNOW, "something HAS to be medically wrong with me").. That looking back, I also realized I'd been sick for as far back as i can remember.. Even as a young teen, I never understood why i couldn't seem to keep up with my friends..i didn't know why my energy levels were lower. The years and years of constant stress preceeding the point when I realized i felt too bad for there not to be a physical medical issue causing my issues. The having no energy to keep any friends.. Trying all sorts of supplements.. Having EVERY Dr treat me like I'm an idiot &/or blame it on depression. Also only ordering tests that weren't helpful & all came bk normal. None of my Drs have acknowledged the severity of my symptoms or how disabling they've honestly been and continue to be. After i told my current Dr, I believe I'm suffering from CIRS & tried explaining it to him, he insisted there's no way I've got inflammation in my body, cuz he's given me every test there is for inflammation & even autoimmunity & everything was normal. I proceeded to tell him some of the markers that needed to be tested for CIRS & he said he'd never even heard of some of em and that others were "just proteins" that "couldnt tell you anything".. I could keep on about the similar experiences, but I'm exausted alrdy from typing. The differences...ive been sick so long & to the point where there's no possible way i could do any kind of work, I can't afford to see a functional medicine Dr. I don't have family that's supportive.. Not for emotional support or financial support. They all think I'm crazy and just lazy, even after I've read them stuff about the illness. I have no one i can move in with to get outta this moldy environment. I see no light at the end of the tunnel. My plan is to print a research study article by Shoemaker & take it to my next appt.. It's one with all the tests they gave study participants, further broken down into which ones showed no differences in patients and controls, then the tests that did show differences. I'm also gonna print the basic info about cirs & hope 2 God he'll at least order some appropriate tests. If he does, i have no doubt my results will show how sick i am, then I need him to either write me an Rx for binders, or help me get disability. Hopefully both. After that, I'd (at some point) be able to feel a little better, enough to get a job and pay to see a shoemaker Dr, or if i cld get disability, then save my money and finally see a shoemaker Dr. I've taken the VCS test and failed. I've also got nearly all the symptoms... Not just the clusters, but individual symptoms. My entire neighborhood is VISIBLY moldy! I've never seen any place even close to as nasty as the houses look around here (as far as being just COVERED in mold!! Ive been tempted to try calling the EPA to come check it out, cuz it's so bad and i can't afford to buy even basic essentials, much less pay a mold specialist to look into this area or order the environionomics tests. I can't even buy razors 2 shave, a toothbrush, anything!! My mom's too busy babying my narcissistic brother, 18yrs older than me, who moved here to use her til she dies. She's terrified of him, so won't speak up, stand up for herself or disagree with him in any way. He literally keeps her debit card and spends whatever little she has left every mt after paying bills. Since he's been here, my mental health is much worse & my mom's health has steadily declined. She's 84 now & IDK how much longer she'll be around.. So i really gotta find a Dr to help ASAP, or I'll end up on the street with my young daughter in foster care or something. Since i mentioned my bro, I might as well add... The years and years of stress i spoke of earlier.. Was thx 2 him. I trusted him back in 2009, when i planned on filing bankruptcy due to medical bills with no ins. He convinced me that in court they could force me to sell my car & buy a cheaper one & offered to let me put my car in his name, so that didn't happen. Well, i trusted him at the time & had no clue of his narcissistic tendencies, so I put my car in his name the day i went and paid cash for it (following my previous car being totalled). Not even 3 mts later, he took over the car and left me with no transportation at all. I'd just had to quit my job as a hairstylist due to injuries from a wreck and move back in with my parents. I put every penny i had into that car, so i was broke with messed up credit. After he tore my car up, my parents let him "borrow" their car. Needless to say, he never gave it bk. All my dad rly wanted from him was for him to take them to church on Sundays, but he was too busy playing golf every Sunday. My dad said he'd prob never get to go to church again in his life. He passed away in 2016 & he was right, he hadbt been taken to church once. I HATE my brother, esp now, having to watch him take advantage of my mom like he does. She literally goes behind him & washes his dishes,bc he won't clean up after himself or even take out the trash!! I want to be able to get my daughter and i outta here so bad! I believe she's suffering from CIRS already. I know she IS depressed for sure. She cries at least once a wk bc she's so unhappy being stuck here with no vehicle. Oh yeah, he sold my dad's car b4 he moved here. He had a van when he moved in, but a month afterwards, he hit something and popped a tire. He never bothered getting it fixed & has left the van sitting out there, not paying taxes on it or even considering getting it bk on the road for 4yrs or more.
Love Junior, he gives awesome info and hope. One of the best videos on recovery.

Positive feeling > positive thinking
Tylenol is a joke for pain management and very detrimental for the liver from what was said back in the 80’s . Maybe thats why the hospitals continue to use it ? Oh yeah, they are out to keep us sick and on meds, orders from Big Pharma !
Thankyou so much for this amazing interview ❤
Wow this was a awesome interview ❤️🙌🦄 was holding onto every word 🙏 super grateful if liz or karden could answer : if youve been taught brain retraining and bee doing it dilligently for ages and have plateaued after recoveringmaybe 50% with it(yes i understand from thus convo that bottom up approach may now need to be intergrated) but say still do anxiety of say going on a walk or something and we do a brain retraining technique or brain rehearsalof it going well and can get the emotional and physical/somatic sensations up of a great past walking experience, ill come out of the visualization and feel good or confident for a few seconds /minutes but then notice the anxiety or indecision about doing the walk or how enjoyable its gonna be come up again-obviously there is like a deep belief that im still fragile /have to be careful /might not go that well and not sure how to resolve this belief while still experiencing sensations: so like what do we do here in these situations of limiting beliefs/predictions or i guess old traumatic feelings coming up? Because obviously theres something not shifting underneath thats creating this continued response even when often walks might go ok or are even enjoyable ?Hope this question makes sense and so incredibly grateful for a answer 🙏
Thank you. This has been more helpful than anything else I have seen on the subject!!
Nice one, watching my hives inflammation fade day after day until they completely vanished was such a relief, I went with what I pointed out and within the first 10 days or so the urticaria was barely visible! I just go'ogled the latest by Shane Zormander and after 20 days my skin has never been healthier!
Was great to hear about Miguels work from a slightly different angle! Thx for the interview 🤗
the AQUARIUS is the most amazing stage of human being history to LIVE so grateful to be here... thanks all
what a beautiful HeartTouching Letter at the end... i almost compeletly felt that .. fiigured it out before.. the pain is there for a reason!... LIKE AND SUBS

So glad people are sharing how they over came the speed bumps of life. We are the creators of our life.🌻
Read Dan’s book when i first got ME/CFS. I always liked the way he thinks. A lot of people bashed him for his theories but at least he’s thinking outside the box and offering new persoectives and he’s right about a lot of stuff.
Interesting she mentioned groups. I too am too empathetic (and I do believe you can overdo that empathetic stuff). When my husband died suddenly people were saying "Ooh! There are lots of groups for that!" I tried it and it was awful! I was not only grieving myself but also for them. I had to get out of that. My question is, I wonder what percentage of us are overly empathetic and have taken on other people's pain along the way? I know now that I had my own trauma and took on other people's crap too.
Yes, I used to feel everyone else's feelings, and I'm still an empathetic person, but I think this journey made me realize that it's not good to carry/feel/solve everyone's burden and the best thing I can do is just take good care of myself so I can show up for myself and those that I love. I realized this after I got way too involved with advocacy groups and then had setbacks. I also started to get into Abraham Hicks books at the time, which was more about aligning with what you want to feel (rather than fighting against what's wrong).
It definitely seems like a large portion of people who get ME/CFS are empaths from talking to so many people. I'm glad you realized, after all you have been through, that you deserve to put yourself first. Sending you good vibes!!
Just happened to see an old Golden Girls rerun from 1989 where they tried to tackle chronic fatigue. Wow! Twenty five years ago and they STILL gaslight us! Just sayin'.
I watched the Golden Girls in 2020 and when the CFS episode came ... with Jeffrey Tambor as the gaslighting doctor no less... I was like THIS HITS TOOOOO close to home. They were always ahead of their time!
@cfsrecover Does the program use visualization at all? Is the brain rewiring simply just telling ourselves we are safe? I have a hard time because when symptoms arise (and there are many), my thoughts go to all the dark narratives of what this could be (it's Lyme! Mold! Drug injury! Treatment resistant anxiety!) and it's hard to get calm. How to break those patterns of behaviour?
I just saw this interview. I am so sorry you went through this. There is nothing more heartbreaking like being severly ill with children. I am really happy that you got well. Wish you and your familly all the health and happiness.
Yessss amazing well done
Thank you Liz and Phil for this great Interview, so many helpful insights. The only thing I did not understand is how Phil on the one hand says you can not go from being doing very little to doing a lot because there is actually something wrong with your physiology, when talking about GET and Pacing, but then shares recovery stories where people would go from being in a wheelchair to walking around in the city for hours within a day ?
I agree I’m new to learning this how do you press yourself from a wheelchair to walking within two days I guess I need to look more into people who have had success with this process
Excellent interview! Does anyone have any recommendation for neuroplasticity?
Women are more susceptible to trauma, or men end up just killing themselves more often? What some women and people in general assume about men is truly sickening. Having trauma and chronic illness as a man is devastating. Those who make it out alive are very strong.
Diet of no wheat, gluten, additives, alcohol, get B12 checked, sleep apnea checked, vitamin D , coq10 , pace energy, get rid of people that don’t make you feel good, do something that makes your soul sing
I love this so much! I’ll come back to this again and again. Thank you Liz - you are such an inspiration to me. Is the idea to do your own visualisations in silence (which sounds hard!!) or to follow ones like this? This was such a joy. Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
When she says 45mins "I was rewiring all the time" what does she mean? What was she doing? Thanks!
Brain rewiring comes in all different forms. In the context Suzi was referring to, it's likely she was recognizing a pattern, thought, or behavior that was based in fear, reminding herself that it was her nervous system, taking steps to calm her nervous system, and redirecting her attention on something positive. There are different programs that have different approaches. Some are more trauma based than others.
I in uk. So are you saying that light in progress. Recovers you from cfs /. Fibomalyagia. I not heard of it here in Scarborough. X really happy you got a cure x

Bravo !!! This is such an amazing interview Liz 🤍 Thank you for sharing this story and wisdom 🙌🏼
I always hear people saying acceptance and giving in is the key to recover but then is never really explained what it means practically and emotionally?
great interview!
<3 Jesus loves you and invites you to speak with Him in yer Heart at anytime as you would to a good Friend, He never denies anyone who trusts Him.
i understand the desire to edit to make the dialogue flow more naturally and be more digestible but it very slightly takes away from the natural pacing involved in storytelling thank you for your video and channel
