    That comment about putting where you're dying in the run into context is pretty big, I dunno if people tend to think that way because they tunnelvisioned the "I have to 1CC this or I'm bad" mindset, but if you have the ability to get to like stage 4, you have the ability to finish the game. To me, it's not a question of skill at that point, it's just knowledge and a little practice.

    What is the distance between the lever and the Square/X/Y button? I'm sure the lever is further away from the button compared to regular vewlix layout which most arcade stick uses, including the F500.

    I just finally figured out what Benbo mode is, it’s located under the hot blooded mode option(which also has to be unlocked). Not sure how I was overlooking that as checked everything. But Benbo when activated creates more particle Fx when destroying enemy ships. It’s cool but can get distracting. I honestly like standard hot blooded mode which creates swirling explosions when destroying enemies. I can use it in easy but very hard it’s to distracting. I also just unlocked a sega genesis filter to make the game look like a OG Sega game, so cool!

    I implore anybody watching this to shoot over to rawrlabs channel and please drop them a sub, a like and a friendly comment if your enjoying this game. I’ve dumped a few hours into this one and it is great! I’ve been playing this heavily alongside devil engine. These Indy games often fly under the radar and don’t get nearly enough credit. I may not have even known about it if it weren’t for schmup posting this vid and for that I’m grateful! Also on subject of Devil Engine and this game. This game has a power up called focus which allows you to absorb bullets! I felt right at home lol

      Hah, I think you mean Flash item, but yeah - that item is inspired directly by Devil Engine (I had been playing it a bunch at the time... still need to go back and get that Very Hard 1cc...)

      Very cool! Thanks for making it! lol Pleasure to meet you man, you must be Ben from the end credits! It’s great dude, I always play it right after dev engine. It always helps relax me even though it can get hectic. When I beat it the first time i said that wasn’t so bad, then Planet X opened lol. It seems everytime I’m ripping it and stocking bombs and got my power ups straight a curve ball gets thrown where I fight a boss I’m not to familiar with, or maybe I don’t get that one power up like slow or focus and I’m forced to rely on something else like the buzzsaw. That always keeps it fresh and you just can’t predict what’s going to get thrown at you, boss wise at least. Some of the stages are beautiful as well man. Any chance a physical is planned? I’d def rebuy!

      @Shmuptopia 6 днів тому

      Hey, man! I always greatly appreciate you swinging on in for these episodes. Despite the short duration of this topic, it's nice knowing people can take something away. On consistency specifically, I'm actually launching a supporter-exclusive series that takes a closer look at ways we can grow beyond our average performance. The first episode is actually almost done and happens to be a primer on consistency with future episodes covering sub-components (otherwise the video would easily be 3-4hrs long). That said, since not everyone will want to support financially, I may consider a way to summarize the material and make a less in-depth version. We'll see how things go though. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of the week!

    Wow! This game is fantastic, I ripped it apart after all these days of Devil Engine lol. But what a brilliant, beautiful game and the fun factor is through the roof! So many nods to the classics here . The fire stage in particular, I tthink it’s called Furiosa, I got instant flashbacks to Lifeforces fire stage and the flame arches jumping by every couple seconds, awesome stuff. I love all the different items but the one I stuck with entire time was the stopwatch which alllws you to slow time down, ton of fun using that. This game is currently on sale as well atm for just 8$! Had some points to redeem and got it for 6. Just 1ccd it on normal but still have a lot of stages need to try and excited to see them, pure eye candy this game, love it and def recommend it

      I haven't felt gripped by Space Hunter DX yet, but a couple of years ago I banged out some stuff in Space Moth and love the mechanics and feel of the game. It's also a worthy challenge. Feeble Light is one I don't see myself prioritizing but it was neat to sample.

    Very well said. I too have heard, "yea I suck at shmups" countless times. Then when asked how often do you play them? The response if usually "oh I've played them a few times but they were hard for me." One thing with this genre is 99.9% of us will only get better by putting in the work. I remember when I started my shmup journey some 12 years ago, I too sucked. Wouldn't last but a few seconds before I would die. Now I can proudly say, I've 1cce'd a couple Cave games and many other classic shmups. I never thought I'd be able to clear any shmup, let alone a bullet hell, but that's proof. If you have an interest in the genre and you actually play, your skill level will improve. The better you get, the more you'll fall in love with these games. Now, my only shmup problem, is it's harder for me to enjoy other genres.

    Thanks for posting this for us Dace. Having guys like M2, LiveWire and so many other top-tier shmups is a double edged sword. We have been getting the best of the best in recent times, but it also makes me extra picky on what I buy. Also, the all-important not having as much time as an adult thing. Alas, this one looks solid, and probably one I'd watch a gameplay of, but not something I'd wanna play myself. Thanks again.

    I have clears of every route and nearly every weapon type and can easily recommend this game. The score attack and boss rush modes are also tons of fun and it has progressively more difficult hard modes that unlock each type you clear it. The "one more run" factor of this game is just off the charts.

    I decided to try ignition mode last night and wow, I think it’s utterly impossible. I don’t understand why there is no difficulty change for that mode. I thought the stages, new music and different boss variations were awesome. But the entire experience is kind of ruined imo with how hard it all is. Towards the end I just gave up entirely and didn’t even bother trying any more to survive lol. I have gotten pretty decent at original mode on very hard but I still need a lot of practice. That mode I find very challenging but manageable. Ignition as well as ex tho, forget about it. There is no way my hand and eye coordination are up to those extremes….ive done way to many drugs in my life lol. Have you tried ignition schmuptopia? And what are your thoughts on it?

      I sampled Ignition briefly when it first launched but didn't commit to it since I had other things on the go. I'll eventually get at it. Ignition possesses a level of aggression that is not present in Devil Engine's very hard mode. It's almost as though it's between very hard and Expert mode, but it's also been quite a while since I jumped in so it might feel more balanced now compared to before. Time will tell.

    • @mikeward5192
      @mikeward5192 12 днів тому

      Thanks for the reply man, ughh your spot on, it’s def more aggressive then very hard, just a constant barrage of stuff thrown at you. I think in time I will get better at it, I’ve gotten significantly better at very hard, I even managed to pass the laser beams on stage 5 with no deaths last night! What I did with very hard is played for a few hours without using my bombs or primary weapon. I just dodged and absorbed. I did this on the bosses as well and it really helped learn the patterns. I didn’t realize bosses die automatically after awhile even without shooting them. I found the mech boss on stage 3 you can hang in the back of him most of time the same goes for the last bosses first form second phase. I’ve beaten them both now using that method without catching a death. I have a real rough time on the final boss last form when the screen goes white. I see what you do with going forward absorbing then pulling back and going forward and absorbing, but for some reason I just can’t catch the rhythm of it. I also retried the prequel stage after playing very hard for awhile and did really well on it. My god what an awesome stage, I wish it was attached to the main game. The boss is so awesome

    Not sure what just happened to my comment so if I’m repeating myself sorry…..but I just started this 2 days ago and really just didn’t care for it at first. After a few hours of just straight death I retired. When I got up next day I had such an urge to play it, which I did, and I just fell in love with it. I did start on very hard but had to drop to ez to learn. I nearly 1ccd it last night if weren’t for those lasers in stage 5, so I’m getting there. You really have to stick with this one and memorize everything like you said in the vid. One of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in a Schmup as well! Big thanks for the vid, referenced many times

      Glad you are enjoying it. It's one of the best STGs I've ever played and the presentation is off the charts! Stage 5 is especially wicked with the way they do the curving animation of the background just before entering the cave. Everything about this game screams quality, atmosphere, and immersion. Let me know if you need any help.

    Do you think starting with this mode gives bad habits when transitioning to arcade ?

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 15 днів тому

      Great question! Some people will feel that you don't learn as much if you jump into a mode that is too easy. That said, "too easy" is subjective. Arcade Original, for many people, will be an extremely difficult clear to go after depending on what you've experienced in the genre so far. It's still doable with a correct approach and understanding. However, the benefit of doing a Novice mode first is that you establish a familiarity with the game that can, to some extent, be applied to more difficult modes afterward. Trust this helps and let me know if you need any help.

    cool.. anyway I have most of these as physicals and they work just fine on the switch no Japanese account needed... just saying and shmups can be pricey in Japan too as over there they have quite a market compared to here but once u have a physical u can always resell it if u like.

  • @NicolaARRMagnolia
    @NicolaARRMagnolia 16 днів тому

    Yeah, it's all relative too. If I compare myself to super players I seem pretty bad, but when I watch my wife play shmups I feel like a super player. Like any skill you can't get better without practice. According to Steam I had played Mushihimesama for 150 hours before I managed to clear any of the modes outside of novice. Some people might take even longer, and that's okay. I don't think I'll ever be a super player because I just don't want to focus on playing shmups as much as I would need to.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 16 днів тому

      Thanks for checking this one out! Yeah, it's easy to pump serious time into Shmups depending on what we want to achieve. That said, a little each day is not a huge investment but can still produce huge results if you're consistent. Mindset and approach are two incredibly important factors. I'd love to see your Mushi run at some point! Commentary would be even better but no pressure. Thanks again!

    Wise words. On top of what you said, the skill divide in shmup players is so immense that even incredibly skilled players can look up at the best of the best and feel inadequate. It also makes it very difficult to make a shmup that can cater to such a diverse array of player skill levels.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 17 днів тому

      Absolutely. It's similar to fighting games where the average player is pretty proficient, yet they don't recognize how skilled they are because the standard creates this deceptive appearance of being only as "good" as the average player next to you - the interesting thing being that the overall bar has been raised considerably, so everyone is playing really solidly. There was a time when next to no one was 1CCing arcade shooters. The fact that oodles of people can get close to pulling that off now even if they don't end up doing so demonstrates to me that the bar has been raised for Shmup players as well. Thanks so much for checking this out!

    I'd say you're only bad at something if you don't really put the time and effort to be more efficient in it. I know I'm not "bad" but in general I like to say I'm "bad" just to not overshoot my confidence and to joke around. Being able to 1CC any shmup (even on EZ MODO) is an accomplishment itself.

    I've always said shmups are their own "language" in video games and what I mean by that is legacy video skill is basically not going to transfer at all which can lead to a lot of frustrations. No matter how good you are you have to learn exactly what these games want from you and play by their rules. It takes time to do that, but I think with the right approach anyone can excel.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 19 днів тому

      Thanks for watching, Chino! Totally agree. Operating within the framework enters you into an unspoken agreement of sorts and Shmups will always be a completely different ballpark compared to everything else. I think the required learning from these games is a huge part of what I enjoy because you can't be amazing at something like the C-sides in Celeste or 5-cell difficulty in Dead Cells and expect it to mean anything in arcade shooters. However, at the same time, you can at least apply a similar inner drive if you've established various traits. But even there, the way in which these strengths pan out would be different when it comes to the flow of Shmups.

  • @psymagearcade
    @psymagearcade 19 днів тому

    Great video. I like what you said about not being negative because even I've struggled with that with certain types of shmups, most notably bullet-hell stuff. I know I'm capable of beating bullet-hell games and have done so, but I sometimes start thinking that I'm bad at bullet hell games because I seem to be faster at learning traditional shmups. In reality, I shouldn't be thinking that way. So the negativity can even creep into the minds of more experienced players.

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 19 днів тому

      Thanks for watching, Psy! If you have more experience with traditional shooters, then it wouldn't surprise me that learning bullet hell feels like a slower pace to you. I think an important thing to remember is to keep the bigger picture in mind. It's easy to get attached to a rough session but in the grand scheme, those are mere moments and don't represent what your performance will actually look like if you continue practicing and playing regularly.
