    How did you route the brake cables from the levers to the callipers while hiding them under the gripband?

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 22 години тому

      There are two brake lever versions to look out for in vintage parts, these on this bike are the "aero brake lever" version which different brands had (and still do, shimano makes the bl-r400 model new, these are the bl-r600 model). However, there are the "non-aero brake levers" which come up from the top and are the ones that the cables cannot be routed under the grip tape so those are a bit harder to find in good condition and I do have a video talking about them, they were just not as comfortable as the aero brake lever versions i've tried.

    I have two vintage road bikes, both of which have downtube shifters. I have a Marukin M-420 that I bought new in June of 1986. The frame is Ishiwata 025 CroMo, and it has a nice, sturdy feel to it as you ride. It has Suntour ARx front and rear derailleurs, clamp-on Suntour downtube shifters, a Sakae 53/39 crankset, and the original Dia Compe brakes. I've had it overhauled/refurbished twice since I've had it. The first time was 1999-2000; at that time, I swapped out the original chrome steel wheels for brushed aluminum CyclePro Wheel Works rims, and swapped out the original six speed cogset for a seven speed cogset. The overall gearing is the same; it merely has one more step. Then, I had it overhauled again when I put it back on the road this past spring. My second vintage road bike, which I purchased from the LBS earlier this year, is a 1986 Cannondale ST-500 in a beautiful azure blue metallic. If it hadn't been that color, I could've passed on it, but no, it wasn't just blue, my favorite color; it was my favorite shade of blue, so I had to get it! I love just sitting downstairs and admiring it. The LBS owner took it in on trade, but it was too big for the owner; as a result, it was hanging from the ceiling hooks. I asked if I could try it on. It fit, so I asked him if I could give it a home. He said yeah, and I had it overhauled too. It was the first year that Cannondale installed the Shimano 600 groupset on this bike. It has brazed on downtube shifter bosses, and the Shimano 600 shifters are a work of art. It has a 48/44/28 crank up front, and a six speed cogset on the rear. Though Cannondale says that the ST-500 is one of their touring bikes and not a racing bike, it FEELS racy to me! That bike is a work of art, and it's a hoot to ride! I have two MTBs too, though I'd call them ATBs now with the way I set them up and use them. They both have indexed shifting. While I appreciate it, I find myself shifting all the time to perfectly dial in my cadence. Whereas when I ride the road bikes with their downtube shifters, I find myself asking: is this shift REALLY necessary? Can I tough it out for a short distance, either climbing or descending, in the present gear? Can I wait a few seconds to shift? If I'm on a short incline that will flatten out again, I'll often just stay in the higher gear for a few seconds. It's fascinating how technology impacts and changes our behaviors.

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 15 днів тому

      @@markymarknj oh man that’s awesome you snagged that Cannondale and it was a wall hanger too? Also that is so true about sticking it out and just waiting a little bit longer when shifting with these older bikes because it’s like we absolutely can stick it out but the newer tech and more gears cause us to shift even when it’s not a big deal. Plus it makes us faster!

    • @markymarknj
      @markymarknj 15 днів тому

    I probably mentioned this in a previous comment on one of your earlier videos, but I am running an Alivio 7 spd rear derailleur with a 12 spd mtb crankset that has a NW 32t chainring. I haven't had one issue with shifting or chain drop, which I think is due to a decent spring pressure on the derailleur, a NW chainring, and a good quality chain. The place a clutched derailleur is best suited is definitely off-road when trail riding on an mtb. My 26er "Frankengravel" works flawlessly and I have found myself riding it more than my hardtail or road bike.

      @newoldsteel I have had this Frankengravel build now for nearly 9 months with no issues. The only changes I have made were; going to a 6 mm offset chainring to help with chain alignment and switching to a suspension corrected rigid fork.
