I really enjoyed my experience with Start Playing. Played STA , D&D, and Mothership. It's definitely a good way to test out new systems . All the GMs I had paced the games well and really did a good job of explaining the rule systems. The only thing that sucked was sometimes I couldn't make a session and really felt like I was letting the group down, but for the most part they were able to keep the session running.

My partner has been DMing full-time on Roll20 since the start of the pandemic, running around 11 long-term games a week. I'm currently active in two of those games (I pay! lol), and we finished Out of the Abyss with a third group last year - so I've played at three different paid tables over the course of multiple years. It's always been worth it to me; the players are almost always great folks who show up to have a good time, and the first couple sessions might be a little awkward as we get to know each other, but it smooths itself out over time. We always start sessions with around 10 minutes of digression time, and the longer a campaign goes, the harder it is to contain digression time to just 10 minutes because we're all friends catching up for the week. I also think people are more willing to stay invested long-term and are kept engaged on a session-to-session basis because our DM puts a lot of work into custom maps, finding great music, recording his own foley, and playing around with voice mods to give certain characters a little something extra. A lot of players are motivated to put in more energy and effort because I think they can tell they'll get a lot out of the game if they do, and our DM knows he has to work a little harder to keep people engaged online with voice only/no cameras. There have been a few stray weirdos or people who didn't mesh well, but in the last three years, I can really only think of one that passed the point of "kind of annoying person but tolerable" straight into "you are a lunatic for real."

Having place our own limits on our ttrpg time was organically enforced in the past just by people not being in the same room together. Now that we are all always online, these natural boundaries are overcome with the push of a button. Now these boundaries take effort to maintain rather than effort to overcome. Putting a lot more responsibility on the players collectively than had been expected in the past which a lot of the newer and more exuberant players aren't ready for.

Ever since I got married, if we have other married friends into TTRPG and have them over, that's 3 players right off the bat (which is my favorite size to run most games) Before that, it was coworkers, bandmates, anything where people gather in groups of 3-6 regularly. I've been bugging people to play TTRPGs with me my whole life, it works about 2/3 of the time.

I have... Very many bad experiences with TTRPGs, both online and offline. I'm scared of going back in, especially since I don't have any real income. For the offline TTRPGs, my ex was a DM with ADHD and a D&D hyperfixation that never ended and that only excalated to years of campaigns with THE SAME OVERARCHING STORY, TRIGGERING MY FOMO, my family situation didn't help and it's a great escape, I started having delusions (thinking my character was a past life), I was having gender questions that I was quickly scared off to making myself from a mormon member of the friend group... I ended up flirting with an ED and a couple weeks later max, I was out of all campaigns, cold turkey. As for my online situation (which was a play by chat), it was more about people just not being good. Lots of transphobia, I got semi-harassed, my depression made me spiral into doing things both I and my boyfriend weren't comfortable with, I was being more secretive, delusions were back (not like before though), addiction came into play... I ended up leaving cold-turkey, also. I just think, at this point, that roleplaying and TTRPGs and RPGs that aren't videogames just aren't for me because I risk of hurting myself and others emotionally unless I deal with my mental state first. And so, I just completely avoid anything that is roleplay but isn't a videogame.

As for the good, my current boyfriend runs Stars Without Number. I did a cameo with a character I made on the spot. It was good. I tried also getting in with a main character of mine. Didn't work because I was going back into all my old habits and also my boyfriend deemed the campaign to be "not enough" with writing and with how smart the people at the table were.

Super ADHD over here. Using books and paper definitely keeps my focus better. It was actually the Apocalypse system that got me back into RPGs. I am an old school theater kid and author so I am having a lot of fun fleshing out our Dungeon World with our DM. The one exception for an apple pencil is tracing my paper maps to put them in Procreate and color them. I am currently working on a massive project which will be printed out for our DM to keep. No way would an online experience hold my attention like this.

been playing online dnd since the start of 2024 with start playing actually! Been craving to play and thought of using it as a great way for some exposure therapy for my social anxiety while also learning to combat my commitment struggles. I really lucked out with the first dm I chose to play with as he works really well for me! We don't really use cameras which i'm kinda glad (we had the option to use it in one campaign but declined) bc i've learned i really enjoy the freedom to show on my face that Im bored if someone is taking too long on their turn in combat and can just skim twitter until their turn passes, or stuck between lots of facial and bodily expressions vs none at all but neither might come across correctly to most people for how i'm feeling and i don't have to spend time and effort to present myself like a mostly normal person 😅 Online has honestly worked really well for me, at least as a player! I think for me, in person DMing works best and online for being a player! Can't play in person anymore since my friends moved, but i'm definitely enjoying online through startplaying ❤ Just wished some strangers were better with understanding their boundaries and communicating their problem so things could improve for them instead of just quickly leaving during or after a session (or suddenly after MANY sessions), but i think that's just part of the chronically online "conflict resolution" style 😅 (and of course it's fine to also leave after a session and you don't have to give a reason, it doesn't even have to be a big reason to leave bc everyone wants different things from a game, im talking more about the chronic conflict avoiders )
