Reviewing the October 8th Balance Patch Changes for World vs. World in Guild Wars 2
-- The balance patches that change a lot by changing relatively little are always the most interesting ones, because they're so hard to predict. And the patch on October 8th will only be changing two major things about World vs. World. First, Celestial is losing Concentration and Expertise, and second, Transfuse will no longer reposition downs. These two changes should have big consequences on the way that groups construct squads and approach fights, and this patch will do a lot to shake up the current World vs. World meta.

    With the change to the Celestial statting in World vs. World on October 8th, it's no longer a good prefix for the build, but the rest of the profession is completely unchanged, both in function and quality in the meta. Switch all of your Celestial gear to Minstrel, and you're good to go.

    I think the big change with Necro's transfuse might have helped a lot in PVP/WvW but I think a lot of players are more made bc of the PVE aspect. Spear 5 is confusing for sure

      PvE is definitely not my area of expertise, but yeah, it was a decision to make that change affect all gamemodes, rather than another competitive balance split. I can't speculate much on that decision, though.

    Thieves still glitching into tower but transfusion was an issue. Lol 😅 also, where is the natural armor and health pool discussion and how the class skills don't always balance out that disparity. It's why the most popular roaming classes are thieves/willbenders/condiwars.

      @@sheffplaysgames for example they allow transfusion to be op and game warping for year with no efforts to tweak number of targets, cd or range to make the ability more reasonable. Scourge will likely already take a hit and need to specialise more damage oriented (as their boon coverage and uptime is pretty bad) or full support and learn into being able to supply barrier. But then transfusion arguably one of the most thematic and best utility next to boon corruption necro offer is gone in all game modes. This pattern where anet nuke something into the ground and then wait and see if they need to buff it back into relevance later is just comically them for me at this point. I would prefer to see them trying to tweak stuff bringing op, meta warping stuff down in power with the variables they have to change and maybe even buffing classes that are really underperforming. They are capable of this and did so recently with revenant spear taking it from the most broken pve thing in the game where a boondps was the single highest benchmark in the game to a much more reasonable spot without making it unusably bad. You mentioned some ways scourge and transfusion had alot of skill expression in the video as well as the issue of a good scourge Vs bad scourge being too much of a deciding factor I find it hard to believe anet didn't think we could give transfusion pull a 30-45-60 second internal cd and make it only pull 1-2 people depending on cd maybe make the range rven shorter so the scourge and squad have to play around that or the scourge has to place a sand wraith on downed playets to pull them. I agree in it's current state it's not good for the game I can see alot of ways to fix it without destroying a really good thematic class fantasy utility they came up with. But i guess we'll see how this shakes out. Since launch of Gw2 balance feels like it has been all over the place and the they nerf stuff into the ground to then buff it later as its completely underplayed in the meta is a pattern I've seen so often from them now and probably alot of cool ideas are in the bin somewhere cause they came up with couldn't be bothered balancing it to a reasonable spot and then just ditched it. Necro spear 5 is another good recent example rather than try to balance that shorter effective window, only eats 1 boon, max 5 targets for fear of it getting abused they nerfed it before the potentially abuse and class stacking could even happen. That mechanic seems to me like a natural counterpart to aegis the ability to negate 1 boon application on an enemy. We have alot of boon corrupt and steal in the game already which is fine. So i guess the issue was necro spear 5 being the only one to have this ability yes I can see that as an issue but if the ability were balanced well enough I think it would be something that could have been added to other classes, weapon kits that were lacking a bit. Would have been my choice as it was cool bit of kit and tech rather than being scared of it over performing before it ever did so. Sorry for the long post but I have given examples of two balance changes that were a bit heavy handed and one that was appropriate. Tldr: Just wish they used a scalpel and 3d printer for their balance more often than the sledgehammer and chainsaw.

    The reason people are unable to understand the reason Extirpate was removed as a thing is that they fundamentally have no understanding of how broken OP Boons are in this game. If Boons only had 1/3 or 1/4 of their power, Extirpate would only be a minor annoyance. Instead, it's majorly crippling since Boons are such a large part of player power. A 33% reduction in power damage taken is almost as good as stacking as much Topughness as you can. Extirpate can never be balanced as the Boons are right now. It'll either be too OP or utterly worthless, there's no in-between.

      I'm inclined to agree. Winds of Disenchantment got nerfed for the same reason -- there's a giant difference between removing boons that have been applied, versus preventing boons from ever being applied in the first place.

      @@sheffplaysgames Whenever I see people lamenting that there should be more Boonstrip or Boon prevention I always scream in my head that the reason we have so little and they get constantly nerfed in Competitive is because Boons are such a large part of a character's power that if you remove it you nerf them severely. If say, Protection only reduced damage by 10% or 15% then something that could remove it or prevent the application would be a minor inconvenience. When it has a 33% damage reduction, then it's a MAJOR part of the character's defensive capabilities and removing or preventing it completely wrecks them before the fight has even begun for real.

    I like the celestial nerf, but this will not make roaming more balanced. Some classes / spec's just have too much. If you have more boons, cc, damage, sustain and mobility than 90% of other classes, that has to be addressed. Most of the time when Anet is balancing something in sPVP, they are omitting those changes in WvW, and this is why roaming is in such a terrible state.

      these changes make roam one shot fiesta. some classes come with eod are more powerfull than others such as willbenders. and some come with eod rely on use of celestial like catalysts. idk how specs with low mobility and boons will survive againsts willbenders in current situation.

      Professions and specs with low mobility and boons are probably going to struggle to survive against most things in a 1v1 situation regardless -- those are two very important factors that those professions are missing. It's difficult to not generate boons, and not have movement utilities, and perform well.

    anet have started down a bad road here. adjusting stats lke this and potentially minstral stats, is lazy and ignores the real issue, the design mechanics around boons. This will just lead to even more 1second burst kills, which already plague the game. I've seen it before in other games, it kills the game mode pretty quickly once it starts, its a self enforcing cycle of misery to all but those lame people who engage in it.

      Should give you a pretty chunky heal, but I think if you wanted as much raw healing as possible, you'd play Vindicator or something like that.

      Alacrity and Quickness are probably a bit too prevalent right now. I think there's a lot of people who would like to see Alac/Quick exist as personal boons exclusively.

      Zergs used cele first then roamers did to compete when swarmed by them. Also thief is only crutch with deadeye or p/p condi daredevil since they only rely on stealth d/p and s/d builds mainly just evade or blind with barely any booms yet will ended can port and get every boon basically in the game while having high dps stability to never get cc’d and invulns and blocks and tons of aegis. Revealed getting buffed so the thief crutch is less valid also the fact that thief gets melted by any class face to face

      Thank god. I’m so sick of roaming invis players or willbenders. I play holosmith lately and I legit struggle in those fights because I have virtually no mobility or ways to move around. Then I switch to willbender and have 10 ways to move around a area. Total bs and broken. It’s not even fair someone can go in and out of combat with ease with no punishment

    Hey Sheff, Call to Anguish is also a CC skill too since it can pull in players who get hit by the skill to you as well. Tho I wouldn't try to go out of my way to utilize it as such, since PA and Banish are way more important skills to use in Mallyx. But it can be useful in a pinch.

    The stab strip is 1 stack removed every 1 sec interval on a per target basis. The 9 sec cd is for the quickness buff on the weapon swap.

    Having done some tagging in WvW a number of years ago I have one piece of additional advice for new commanders. Remember all the players are mercenaries.     With the changes to siege, celestial gear remaining in the game mode and the current *condi* meta--WvW has become less playable/enjoyable than ever in its ~10 year career. I've never seen a bigger exodus of prominent and skilled players/guilds leave than what I've seen in the last 1-2 years. The devs responsible over WvW need to spend less time pandering to new/unskilled players and just stick with competent balance and encourage open field combat--this is what most WvW players are looking for. Encourage and reward players for getting better, working together, coordinating. Instead we have an environment that encourages hiding in objectives and operating siege.

    Roy randomly showed up on in EOTM the week of the restructure. He joined us to get the weekly done which was funny. I like him as Ive seen him roam. All other anet players in wvw hide in mobs

    yeah you need do to something about the exploiters on keeps and tower thats what you need to fix, thats the main problem on wvw, just hacked in to a t3 towers or keep tadaaa ez t3 cap and it only takes one player to do that GG.

      Any time I see a video pop up on Reddit that includes good, step-by-step documentation of where the terrain issues are, and what the specific skills are that are used to exploit the terrain, I pass it along to support.

    Are they going to start doing anything against the cheaters running all over that place? the past year this is becoming normality. most of the players in WvW especially are suffering from this situation. if you don't know what I am talking I can share all the websites offering cheats ofc with a monthly subscription.       I have no idea what cheats these are. I'm familiar with terrain exploits to get into towers, but that's already reportable. I know for a fact that I've sent some people on an ArenaNet sponsored vacation after seeing them glitch into a tower and reporting it.

    They should add a rental Basic Warclaw for players without. I tried to introduce two friends to WvW and both quit because they couldn't use mounts. They couldn't practice the game mode unless I was there to speed boost them, which I'm not always, we're all working adults with different schedules. They were totally confused and left behind on their own. Why couldn't they just buy a basic, non fancy, 'get the job done' mount with gold like in every other game? Also, because it is convoluted, none of the veteran players even remember how the process was done. They asked me, "how do you get a mount?" and I'd long since memory holed all that tedious nonsense. The default answer everybody gives to this is "search it on UA-cam". We cannot pretend that isn't a HORRIBLE system.

      i completely agree, when EOD come out I pointed out that in PVE you practically got a mount and a glider for free with a base account with only EOD (not having POF and HOT) a basic one without mastery, and was one of the greatest idea the PVE dev group had, Instead in WvW You got nothing at all, no mount no glider, You had to buy HOT and POF (even just POF) but only for WvW and not for PVE, this was a real fail from the WvW team, they really do not understand, as PVE devs did, that as the game it's now You have to have those two things, you have, even basic, same happened with skyscale in SOTO, good job PVE group, but again in WvW the situation is still the same, You paid for 1 or 2 expansions (EOD and/or SOTO) and you can't use any mount or glider in WvW, unbelievable...

I've got my ArcDPS windows configured for easy stream visibility, and if Solemn's got his set up over the minimap it's probably to maximize the viewable region of the screen so that you can see over walls, etc. Something my config definitely does not help with.

      I like playing with my friends too much to quit, unfortunately. But I definitely make time to play some other games. I'm very into Dyson Sphere Program, Project Zomboid, and Against the Storm right now. It's nice to have a few games on rotation for when you get tired of one of them.

    Stacking late NA, OCX, and Sea up on T1 is essential for the mode! That's the ONLY way to have enough content in the off hours and make the mode viable. That's why players created static Tiers and it worked for years. Players who liked WvW, PPT, and winning stayed in T1 and T2! NA fight guilds had T2 and T3 as they only cared about GvG'ing anyway. Players who like smacking gates unopposed had T4 for that. The dev's taking away our agency by locking worlds has been the problem for years. World restructuring has accelerated taking away player agency and it's the wrong way forward. We the players want content, want good matches, and need the tools to create it. Case in point, you mentioned Season 2 and JQ and TC 2v'ing BG. They were only 2v'd hard for the first 3 days. After that they were only focused to keep their score down. This was a great thing as it showed players were more than capable of managing the mode ourselves. BG became overstacked and toxic and we the players applied consequences for it. As I said, we the players want content and want good matches. The Dev's need to give us our Worlds back and get out of our way.

      @@sheffplaysgames It had nothing to due with the 2v. The problem was the ridiculously long duration of 9 weeks. Some of us were playing 8+ hours a day, some even 12-16. It was insanity.

Most of the people who I've talked to from those servers, during Seasons, talked about how the 2v1 wasn't fun for any of the three servers, and ruined their enjoyment of Seasons overall.       @@sheffplaysgamesThe backstory of Season 2 was that BG's "War Council" tricked the dev's into opening BG by tanking. They had guilds lined up to transfer in the moment the Dev's opened them and they did. JQ and TC were closed the whole time and there was nothing we could do. BG obnoxiously boasted about stacking and how they were going to win season 2. The collective despising of BG grew and we decided to punish BG for it and we did! It was still a lot of work and a lot of overtime to contain this ridiculously super stacked BG. After 9 weeks players were burnt out and pissed at the dev's for all of it. So the game lost players. Yes, the dev's can themselves cause a lot of problems when they remove player agency. My advise to Grouch back in the day was to open worlds and give free transfers.       @@kylequest What's the incentive for a group to play on any server that's not in the top tiers, if you can transfer to any server for free and ignore population limits? If T1 is BG, JQ, and TC, why would somebody want to play on Eredon Terrace, or Sanctum of Rall, or Kaineng? Especially if players continued to receive rewards for winning as they did in Seasons?

      Already fixed. I've turned off the notifications for PTT activation and deactivation, and made a new OBS scene that keeps my microphone on push to talk instead of always on. Should keep the audio *much* cleaner in the future. I like that my stuff is a little bit rustic and bespoke, but in this case it presented as a bit too amateur, and I'll have it looking and sounding better next time. :)

      Roy and Cecil were in the same squad I was -- Cecil even took over commanding near the end, after the other tags logged off. Our plan was for it to be a sort of shared activity that we were doing while we chatted. But I don't think that we made that very clear, and I can either do a better job of integrating it into the conversation next time, or just not play during the interview and find another activity or format. Great feedback regardless though, I appreciate it.

    How are they gonna stop people from merging to 2/3 mega servers that will dominate everyone else? I'm on frost citadel eu currently and its straight up garbage matchmaking for weeks and people have already migrated. Don't see there being anyone in 2 weeks, straight up abandoned. People will always migrate to winning server. I didnt hear anything clear about that outside of "hope it works one day".

      Old servers, pre Restructuring, were thousands of people, and those people could coordinate transfers to stack them. Under Restructuring, the maximum number of people that you can "stack" is 500, and transfers aren't possible. It's a smaller grain size to work with.

      Actually, megaservers dominating everything else are less of a problem now than before. I don't even understand how you people don't see that. EU example : there was one single megaserver, WSR and no one could do anything about it. Now, the guilds that were bandwagoning WSR are divided amongst 4-5 teams, and all of them are D1 to D2. Those players were together before the WR.
