    I've kicked around that area since the '80s, pretty interesting. Big rockslide from 2011 rain event near there. Its always been fun to scramble around the river hills.

    Is it your thought that Civil War soldiers were bunking in these spaces? Or, were you just checking out the geography?

    • @TopoRanger
      @TopoRanger 11 днів тому

      Mainly just to find new caves. But the thought did occur to me later on that evening. It's certainly possible that soldiers bunked in the caves at the bottom there. I don't know if there is evidence in the historical record.

    Subscribed! Glad to see another kindred soul out there exploring the Susquehanna River. I'm trying to explore the entire 444 myself, but finding others who share the same interests are hard to come by. If you ever want to team up sometime, let me know. And ironically, I just came across this tidbit of information yesterday, but I believe those line patterns you pointed out in the rock are something called thalassinoides. They were created by tiny borrowing shrimp that spent their entire lives tunneling in and living under the bottom of the shallow sea that once encompassed most of Pennsylvania.

    Hi. I usually watch videos while drinking my morning coffee or after supper. This time I had the opportunity to watch your video while eating my supper. If I may I am thinking of the two explorers Thomas Jefferson sent West on an Expedition. Weren't they Lewis and Topo? The Lewis and Topo Expedition, if I may call this video. So, as I was eating my banana pudding, I searched for the limekiln ruins in Lancaster. There's a book written by Ken Miller. He has searched the County for all ruins. Interesting. Have you thought about writing a book on your adventures?.

    • @TopoRanger
      @TopoRanger Місяць тому

      I have perused the pages of that book over at the mall. I've never thought about writing a book about these experiences. Could be a new angle. I have thought about doing more scripted documentary style videos.

    Over 40 years ago, friends and I camped a lot on Lower Bear Island. There was no cabin there, that you describe. Did you find the small cave on the overlook on the upstream side of the island? Surprise, I found a pestle in a large boulder just upstream of Lower Bear Island. It was in a worn in grinding spot on the top of the boulder. My guess is this was used when the water lever was lower. Also, when the water is really clear, one can see the stone circles of old Indian garbage pits on the bottom of the river on the downstream end of the island.
