Annihilation is Peak Cosmic Horror | Video Essay
In this video I compare Annihilation (2018) to the novel that it was adapted from, also called Annihilation (2014). I also examine the elements of Cosmic Horror in the film and ponder how it questions our anthropocentric worldviews and biology.

Why SENUA'S SACRIFICE Deserved More Attention | Video Essay

🗡️ The greatest battles are not fought with the sword, but in the mind 🗡️ As I'm working up to recording the Annihilation essay, I decided to make a quick video essay about Senua's Sacrifice, which is a type of experience that no-one seems to be making anymore. It was nice to cover a video game on the channel again, although I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do this again just due to the work lo...

☀️ WHAT DO YOU SEE? ☀️ First of all, I apologize for the lazy lava lamp background. It was the only way I could get this thing uploaded. It was originally supposed to come out (cheekily) the first of April, but alas, this is my 30th render. Talk about missed synergy: there was the solar eclipse, and Alex Garland announced his retirement during the making of this video. Also Shogun with Hiroyuki...
True Detective: Night Country - Not Enough Mystery

I was extremely excited for Night Country. Not only do I love the setting and a shift in perspective (in protagonists as well as the show runner), but the early reviews also lauded it as a return to form. Unfortunately, Night Country has real issues in how it deals with its characters as well how little it focuses on its central mystery. Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 2:05 The Characters 7:47 Danvers 1...

The Ending of BARRY is Incredible | Video Essay

Here's the thing: I wasn't into this ending the first time that I watched it, but it has definitely grown on me. In this essay I discuss the dramatic irony that the final season has and how the show comments on the media landscape that it is a part of. In the last chapter, I note a personal issue I had with the ending, which to be clear, didn't affect my enjoyment of the ending. It's just a thi...

When I watched the movie I thought it to be rather uncreative. It felt like made by someone who pondered about cosmic horror for the first time and thought it had to be somewhat understandable or else it wouldnt land, like it was holding back because it had to have some meaning. It felt very "human centric".

I want to point out something you got wrong. The Alien doesn't know where you are. The Director AI will point it in the right direction but never tell it where you are. The AI and Games videos talk about this being the fact of the matter. Edit 1 of many to probably come: but saying the alien going after who's the closet vs the one who shot the gun is a dumb argument. Maybe you didn't mean it sound like your just mad you got caught but the Alien doesn't know who shot the gun. It heard the sound and showed up and if it sees you first then it's going for you first that's just how it works. Edit 2: It's good the save points are spread out. If you could get back to where you need to be in a few minutes after dieing it wouldn't be a real set back. But if you know that it's gonna be 20 minutes till you can save again, suddenly it becomes far more tense cause if you die your shut out of luck. That's the thing that makes a hard game engaging cause you NEED to pay attention.

just before the climax when they're releasing the payload and get up close and personal with the sun i always thought that the flares and spots looked a lot like tentacles and eyes. so that imagery always gives me big lovecraft vibes. though ultimately i saw this movie as presenting the sun more anthropomorphically. i interpret this movie as the sun, knowing it is an inhospitable beast, pushing back those trying to save it out of fear of hurting them. perhaps because it doesn't believe it will be saved. after all before now the sun has largely played the role of nurturer for humanity and earth, and no parent ever expects to be saved by their children. i see the main human antagonist as a twisted avatar of the sun further performing this duty of pushing the icarus 2 away. it made the ending more impactful to me. it feels like when capa comes face to face with the surface and is greeted with only gentle warmth that that is the sun's gratitude for him pushing through the fear of death to save it. it's not a flawless idea of the movie lol... but pinbeckers motives still read as on track with this imo. what could humans do to save a god? what right do they even have to interfere? i see it that the crew of the icarus 2 decides they have the right to interfere due to love. the sun has loved earth for billions of years, so it is only right that humans at least try to return the gesture. i wonder if the mission of icarus was a test from the sun in some ways. thank you so much for making a video about this movie. it lives in my mind rent free and i'm so happy to listen to someone else cook on it.

1:20:28 I agree that Ned is clever. Maybe cunning. But he is also *deeply paranoid* and *brings all of his trouble upon himself.* He brings a kid up to a Firewatch job cause he's a desperate dad trying to provide for a kid. He pressures the kid to learn rock climbing, despite lack of interest. He *forces* him to practice when the kid Does Not Want To, resulting in his child's death. And then someone new comes to the tower Because Of Couse, but he didn't think about that cause He Just Wanted Shit To Be Okay For Two Seconds. And He Is Afraid, afriad of discovery of himself or the body, and goes out to get a look at the new guy. Maybe if he gets a good scare he'll bail out, run away *just like he did.* But Henry is, after everything, a good man who cares. Cares about the truth, and reporting when shit happens, and trying to do his job. Ned is his dark foil; what he could become if he fully withdrew and stopped living his life, greiving for someone else who was the center of his world. Delialah is a case study in effective deception while being a Right Mess, and I Think She Knew. She was drunk the night a new hire was due to show up. The key to the gravesite was 'lost a few years back' (how nice) and Ned Just Disappeared. How convinient. I think her intent was to wait for someone new to show up and, if he discovered the body, make HIM deal with it while she continued avoiding confrontation of *any* kind. Avoiding talking about Ned with a joke about How We're Outside, Its Normal Avoiding talking about Ned OR his kid. Like it hurt-- but parting hasn't hurt her that bad with anyone else, she's constantly saying SCREW THAT, DO WHAT YOU WANT! .... so long as I don't have to speak to authorities. Ever. She flirts, even if Henry gives her nothing, or is initially nasty. She resists the idea of them being listened to, which gets Henry to Fight For It just because he hasn't come up with anything else and getting him to beleive the idea through defending it ( very tricky ) She demands that Henry tell her about the stuff on her Because It Sounds Damning As Hell And He Was Supposed To Get Sus of Her And Ignore Ned. Every time Ned is near, she does something sus. The call she answered, probably with a second radio on anothwr frequency, was a genuine human error. And what does she say? "He has no idea." She doesn't say she'll get fired, she says she won't have to come back. And she loves her wordplay. Henry was gonna be their innocent firewatchmen who found a poor boy's body that No One Else knows ANYTHING about... which let's *everyone* get away scott free. That's all Dilialah ever wanted; escape without consequence. But then Henry turned out to be a good dude, and she HATES HERSELF and keeps getting more drunk the longer it eats at her that Maybe She Should Just Fess Up, Screw Ned... but then that sweet, innocent boy will never be found and mourned. She feels responsible. Said so herself. The best lies have a grain of truth. I beleive she and Ned planned the gambit together, intent to keep the new guy distracted and Bug Out plans if he got too close / found the body... with Delailah using *both* to her own ends to get the body discovered and force Ned to go on the run so he can't talk, either. She's tucking and rolling with the double bird behind her, and Henry is Too Smitten To See It, and too exhausted to fight a little affection from a kind woman on the radio At least, that's my take

1:16:00 It's not silly because she's being covert, *its silly because radio phones Are Still Radios.* they are tuned to a frequency or, in cheap models, have preset channels to swap between. All it takes to hear someone else is to figure our what ferquency they're using. Or, if you're a bored old ass man, you scan the radio waves to see if anyone is chatting. My brother LOVED doing scans on a radio receiver because radio tech is p popular out in rural farmland where flat terreign allows radio signals to reach up to 30 miles with the right anttene. When cellular signal can be spotty at best, its just more reliable, so lotta farmers, truckers, and the various specalizations needed to build skyscrapers are fans of radios to communicate up and down a project to everyone who needs to care about their specific peice, in groups separated by purpose, in real time. The big drawback is any signal in the air can be read by *any* receiver, because you're sending it through the air itself with no middle tech. The radio itself IS the part that sends and receives via a *frequency of sound high above our hearing range that can be detected over great distances* Radio towers pick up signals and repeat them, thus Repeater Tower. It's not calibrated to translate frequences back into speach, just repeat back anything it gets at a higher altitude, increasing range for all radio signals in the area. *Its worse than that it's physics, Jim* Okay radio tech nerd out over

When Lena said "It doesn't want" I interpreted it that this being doesn't have the emotional drives we humans contain, but instead something akin to cognitive. Why did it change the terrain? Was it curious at the complex structures of DNA in the living organisms around it, and how they produced different results in the organisms, such as the flower colours and types from what was once the same breed of bush. Does it want to play with DNA? Get extremes or unique forms that it can't find or wants to see? Such as the croc with shark-like teeth. Or is it testing, researching, analysing the contents of our planet? Such as the bear, with its given enhanced hearing and impressive vocal cords indistinct from a human. Or, even worse. Is it researching humans? Analysing their responses to all this chaos and entropy? Who knows? Humans sure won't

26:54 I like the idea that in the end neither of them are their true selves because it is masterfully horrific to imagine a scenario where her memory of who she was and where she came from had changed after she passed out. The entity had duped and juked her very consciousness in some disgusting trick to obtain some form of compliance from her. The same is more obvious in her husband. "I thought I was a man- I had a life- People called me Kane- And now I'm not so sure. If I wasn't Kane what was I- Was I you? Were you me? My flesh moves like liquid- my mind is- just cut loose- I can't bear- I can't bear- I can't bear it. You ever seen a phosphorous grenade go off? If you ever get out of here, you find Lena." Look me in my brown eye and tell me that Alien son of a bitch Annihilated itself this way. Even in cases of greatest tenacity, you are deceived and violently obliterated. Its use of these tenacious subjects is, I expect, its only means of spreading beyond the shimmer. It is a violation of life and an abomination. Its destruction is a number one priority by all capable of seeing its nature. Even if its nature is only seen through human eyes.

He described it's Ai in a weird way to put it simply the Ai has two brains one that knows where you are at all times and another one controlling the xenomorph the first gives hints to the other brain of where the player might be but after it reaches a certain threshold it will tell it to go check somewhere else. The alien ai brain also has a skill tree with over 100 nodes that after reaching certain areas of the game will start opening them up like for example the fear of the flame thrower you could go all game not using it but once you reach a certain part of the game it will auto stop being as afraid of it or if you choose to hide in lockers all the time the alien will learn and start checking them way more often. There are tons of really cool videos explaining them way better than I am doing but i will say its Ai is amazing and even all these years later still very good and way more massive than you would think.

As a fan of cosmic horror and sci-fi, I’m ecstatic to see this film getting the love and appreciation it deserves. I haven’t read the novels, but I plan to. The concept of the Shimmer is fascinating and horrifying. And the notion that the alien being’s mere *presence* is what caused all the mutations, and it might not understand itself (therefore it has no regard for the other beings or environments it encounters)…That’s pure cosmic horror.

I remember Critical Drinker's review of this movie and he was yapping on about how the alien didn't make sense and there was no logic to it. And I'm surprised that he was overlooking the blatantly obvious. It's an ALIEN. It's not supposed to make sense. The fact that nobody can get a grasp on what it is, what it's doing, or what it wants is the whole point of it's existence.
