Palm Canyon Epic Mega Guide | Part 9: Cathedral
The first of multiple "exit trail" options, Cathedral is a 2 mile onslaught of chunk, tight switchbacks and dizzying exposure.
This Mega Guide series is how I'm trying to tackle coverage of epic length rides without having to cram everything into one video. This way, you can find the sections you are interested in and skip the parts you already know.

Palm Canyon Epic Mega Guide | Part 8: Hahn Buena Vista

The Asteroid Zone delivers the goods. There's been a crap ton of good riding so far but this, in my opinion, is the best three miles of trail out here and among the best three miles SoCal has to offer. It's also a good reason to run tire pressures higher than 24psi. This Mega Guide series is how I'm trying to tackle coverage of epic length rides without having to cram everything into one video....

Maintaining flow in this part of the canyon is going to be a challenge to all but the most fit MTBers. If you expect to be hiking every 50-100 yards, you'll be in the right mindset. It's time for a change of pace in the River Valley Zone. The trail flattens out as is it meanders by the creek, which is usually dry but can also become a fully blown river. When it floods this area can become a literal oasis in the desert. This is a good zone to dial back the intensity and enjoy the unusual beauty found in a part of the canyon few people will ever see. I'm trying something new with this one. I recognize that e-bikes are both controversial and not everyone's interest. While I have no intention of turning this into an e-bike channel (I still love my MTBs!), I want to give this a shot and gauge the appetite for it. If you'll really hate it, I'll rethink it. • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243
      @outofshapemountainbikersne4243 Рік тому

      technically, yes. But there is only one unofficial parking place at the section of Glass Road where SART intersects it. It would also shorten your ride significantly and, IMO, it wouldn't be worth the drive up there to shuttle only half of upper SART. Or worse, drive all the way up there only to find the one parking space is filled. Instead, head up the 38 to the start of upper SART at the South Fork parking lot (left side of the HWY across from Southfork campground) and do the whole thing (only 11miles). You can park a second car at Seven Oaks if that is not still closed to public access or up at Angelus Oaks. All that said, you will want to be cautious as both bridges are out and there was significant trail damage from last year that still hasn't been repaired. Still doable but be prepared to get wet and a few hike-a-bikes off trail.

    The trail is horribly overgrown now, the section in the first 5 minutes of this video (north of the waterfall) would be basically unrideable it's so thick with brush and branches. There's also a washout you'll need to hike your bike across 7 miles north of JPL, they'll need proper picks to dig the trail back into the hill there. I was hiking uphill and it was just awful I turned around 7.5 miles north of JPL.

    I am enjoying your videos, partly because your riding level seems to somewhat equivalent to mine, but also because they are well done. I too cut my teeth on this trail with Tedroy in the 80's as a young wild rider on a '86 Stumpjumper. More cautious now, but still riding. I rode this with a friend last year and it was still in good shape, as a younger very serious rider named David Cho and his friends had done some volunteer trail work. At that time there was one very narrow spot that was pretty eroded that ran along a rock face. With all of the rain this year I am afraid that it may have suffered some damage. The narrow spot I mentioned would be impassable if eroded, necessitating turning around and climbing approximately six very hard miles out back to Switzers...

      Reports say that multiple miles of it were destroyed by flooding this year. It will be another long haul to bring it back. With the major loss of plant life on the surrounding hills, I'm not sure if this portion of the Gabe will be sustainable given the amount of debris that strong storms will force down that valley in the future.

    The toughest part about Cathedral isn’t the chunk, exposure, or steepness. It’s the fact that it’s the last of a 23-25 mile strenuous ride and you’re so spent. Plus, you can see the end of the trail and wanting to be done with it so bad.

If you really want to ride up to this, you'll have to go up Dunn road from the Cathedral City side, down the sand wash, then up from there. Then back out the way you came in. A brutal ride, IMO.

    Are you afraid of mountain lions?

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243
      @outofshapemountainbikersne4243 2 роки тому

      No. Almost never but especially in places like this. There aren't good reasons to be afraid of animals that do almost everything in their power to avoid humans. And given the space to do so, they almost always do. In this area especially, there is plenty of time and space for them to avoid us so it rarely enters my mind. The only places where I worry about them at all are the trails in Orange County, which exist on narrow strips of land that force lions and humans together in ways that aren't natural. This allows lions to grow comfortable with humans while also narrowing their access to territory and food. Then there is the logical side. While being attacked by a powerful animal is understandably fear inspiring, it's not logical to be afraid when you look at the statistics. You should be way more afraid of bees, large herbivores, lightning or your own competency on the bike as those things are far more likely to end your lief than a lion. And yet, nobody asks if I worry about bees or elk. I'm not allergic to bees but I've seen what elk can do and when animals like that are in the area, I worry mostly about them.

    What about mountain lions?

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243
      @outofshapemountainbikersne4243 2 роки тому

      If you ever manage to even catch a glimpse of one from a distance, count yourself among the luckiest of mountain bikers and relish your good fortune. Otherwise, understand lion behaviors, be prepared to manage your own behavior if something so bizarrely rare as an encounter ever happens and go about your business. I'd worry a hell of lot more about whether your bolts are tight, or if you have the tools for a mechanical, on a ride like this than mountain lions... about a hundred other more likely problems besides.

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243

      @@zjtheman I recommend a trail bike. When you are first starting out, you don't know yet what segment of the sport will appeal to you. No matter how you feel today, you will almost certainly feel differently in a year or two. Trail bikes are the most well rounded. While they don't poses stand out qualities, they also don't make large compromises for a beginner to overcome. By contrast, XC bikes are highly specialized toward the fitness/climbing/long distance segment of the sport. They tend to be light and go up hill a little easier, but they also ask a lot more from the rider on the downhill side of things. In my experience, people tend to struggle much more with downhill skills than up.

      Which is best depends on factors. How tired you are when you arrive and the kind of terrain you enjoy the most are the big ones. If you are tired, Hahn and Wildhorse are the worst choices. A lot more climbing and desert traversal for smaller payoffs. That said, they are the only intermediate single track exit option. Cathedra is shorter but, IMO, has the greatest degree of difficulty and combined risk. If there is an in between, it's Art Johnson. Trailforks labels it red but I disagree. It has maybe .5 mile of truly high risk content but I have trouble seeing it as more difficult than Cathedral and the entire rest of it is way more advanced-intermediate and flowy with far less risk overall, which works out better if you are running out of gas after the sandwash.

      Watch the weather for palm desert. It will be colder than it says at the top and hotter than it says at the sand wash. It is typical for everyone to shed layers after dropping into the river valley zone. Bring more water than you think you need - people die out there when the temps get into the high 80s. Wear pads - if not for falling then for the plants. Full length shins are recommended. Touch nothing. No plant is friendly. Conserve your energy on the way down. You might be a strong enough rider to do it all but better to find out how strong a rider you are at the top of the sand wash than to learn you are not as strong in the middle of it. There is no shade and the wash will not be firm with the rain so far behind. Lastly, plan your exit around having Dunn Road as a fallback exit in case things go wrong your first time out.

      It’s hard to find a lot of recent info on this trail. It looks like a hidden gem! I am planning to do a downhill shuttle as mapped out on the mtbproject. I was worried about some of the route finding but your videos have been very informative. Have you gone out recently?

      @@jessicacarpio5660 Hidden, maybe not. But gem for sure. All segments put together, this is one of the best and longest Epics in the western US. I rode it about a month ago and it was in great shape with only one downed tree. It's an old and very well built trail that naturally stands up to winters and erosion. So it's very reliable. It's also pretty easy to navigate since there are almost no options to take once you are on it. I need to get back up there soon, maybe next weekend.

    Great videos! Are you doing any guiding the second half of next month?

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243
      @outofshapemountainbikersne4243 3 роки тому

      I could do it for SART/Wildhorse in that time frame. Palm Canyon season is late fall through early spring. Once the temps are the mid 80s out there it's time to ride elsewhere.

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243

      @@pepsnex For sure. People die out there in the summer months. It only takes one thing to go wrong and you're in a survival situation in that heat. No water source, little shade and the only way out is by foot, bike or copter. Not worth it when you can run something high altitude under the trees. If you have a decent group, I can probably arrange a shuttle for a Wildhorse drop just outside of Big Bear. Just as epic minus all the possibility of death by dehydration.

      @@outofshapemountainbikersne4243 Understood. Yeah, we don't want to die ....we just wanna play bikes for now. Let me get with my group and get back to you on that. I moved our potential date for Palm Canyon to 12/4 so we'll keep you posted

    Thank you for the Video. This is my ABSOLUTE favorite local ride. I rode it about 30 times last season. You definitely need a bike bell. On this descent I will hit 20 plus miles an hour for long stretches. I run two timbers and a lion and still will often run music on my phone. Great content! Cheers

      Thanks! For the record, I have a bike bell. But nobody wants to sit through videos filled with ringing bells, so it stays off during video shoots.

    to hit all these trails, whats the best order to minimize climbing and max the descents?

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243
      @outofshapemountainbikersne4243 3 роки тому

      The order in which they appear in the video is my best advice. That said, I've only been there twice so I'm not expert. I chose the recommended route off of MTB project and it seemed good.

    Unfortunately a utility company bulldozed the trail recently. It is basically a fire road now, no single track left.

      It's not for everyone. But it's also easy to over index on the 1/8th of a mile where it is scary versus the other 15 miles of the entire trail that aren't like that.
