Thanks!
And there goes your Icom warranty right there! 😂
ebay batteries! ... yaesu in my case, should work on icom's as well. 8.4V is 8.4V.
Sir, At 13:20 min onwards you are showing some cheap ebay crap and asking why will spend on linear when you can get these for 10%!!! “Penny Wise Pound Foolish” is what is coming to my mind. If you are making a comparison on price, make it between linear and switching of same brand, but you went from linear Astron to nameless shit. Same brand, the price is probably around 60% of linear. Why will anybody in their right mind risk buying a cheap power supply from ebay for their expensive rig!? You are talking about they being bad later and then almost recommending them using only price as a point to buy them!! Some beginner who is new is going to buy them and toast their equipment watching your video in the name of taking a chance! One can buy switching with 30A for roughly 90 bucks from brands like Tekpower. Thats a better way to go than going nameless cheap.
I agree, "I bought one of these and I threw it in the trash,"
@@KM6LYW You did say it, but the 10% cost and hit/miss is what I fear a noob on money constraint will mainly hear and might think of taking a chance. But I liked everything else about your video. 📻
Thanks for the info. I guess I forgot a lot from my technician test.
Hi Craig, Thanks for another excellent video. I love the informal format. Owen Vk5kov
Don't use the phonetic alphabet on VHF???? NO. ALWAYS use it. Many people speak so fast you have no idea what they just said unless they SPELL it. Also, you are assuming they have a great signal into the repeater. If they do NOT then the receiver will need help to copy their call.
Wich is better for Mac? Greetings from Chile
This was very helpful. Thanks

When I got my Novice in the early eighties, we were taught to only use CQ for Morse Code, not voice.

"Satsuma City Schools"? No, I don't think that's Satdump. There have been so many searches for this app, the App Store knows about "satdump," "satdump" and "satdumper" as search terms but gives no results. The SatDump website lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Why not iOS?
Smart meters for house mains.
I think the kids say "picking up what you're putting down"
I think NOAA is pronounced like the name "Noah".
NOAA is pronounced “Noah”
Interesting that it has those decoders built-in yet it can’t change the frequency (depending on the satellite) seems a little bit unusual
it can change freqs, depends on chosen satellite
It looked like when you selected NOAA APT, there was another place for selecting 15 or 18 or ...

The Fe-Pi board seems to be out of production. Can you recommend a substitute? THX
Sorry. Your instructions told me what I needed. IOW - I need to RTFM. THX
Cool software! Downloading now. Thanks for the great videos. Are you aware of any program that can decode AX.25 packet data without using a TNC?
Targeting what radio? There are SDR apps that can listen and decode packets. The receive-only RTL-SDR Blog dongle is linked in Craig's video description.
gqrx has an afsk1200 decoder, works with rtlsdr
Pretty cool, gonna give it a try!
Oh man, I'm optimistic about this. In the past it was such a chore to download satellite images, really hoping it's this simple!! (Leave it to Craig for finding an easy solution!)
As a trucker I have a hotish CB, so it's tough to not say the 10 codes when I am on the ham radio. Also seems like everybody loves to talk too fast whether it's phonetic or non phonetic. It's like they have to be airline pilots
Can you connect this to a digipi without having to use a sound card?
correct! the serial cable is all you need with a raspberry pi and you have a receive-only igate
@@KM6LYW thanks for the reply! So you would need a digipi hat (with sound card) and another custom cable to make a transmit and receive digipi?
@@TyGunnlaugsson that's correct... if you want a full featured data transceiver, you want DigiPi digipi.org . Ygate is a super convenient receive-only alternative.
How did you connect the yaesu ft 2800 to the raspberry pi?
you can see the circuit diagram at digipi.org
@@KM6LYW thanks
Will this kit come with the db9 terminal and 3.5 and 2.5 jacks?
nope, you need to make the radio-end of the cable. Cut up a perfectly good baofeng speakermic from amazon or ebay and you're in business.
Instead of trying to learn how to use your radio you should learn how to play your guitar!
But how do you get it to transmit packets from the computer? Or does it? 73, Steve, AK4R
no transmitting possible... not with that cable anyhow
sweet lord... the music brought back a flood of old memories... May I know the artist?
Pink Floyd, Shine on You Crazy Diamond. simply amazing stuff. But don't listen to my version, get the real deal on the "Wish You Were Here" album.

Excellent video/information. I have a Kenwood TS-50, 20 amp power supply for my TS 440 AT. When I use CW, the power supply gets hot and even needed repair recently, so I am looking for another Power Supply. Will look at Samlex 1235p-m. I can use the TS-50 with diodes for the Handy. Good advice! Subscribed!
hey man! what do you think of the aioc for the baofeng radios? its an all in one programming chip that has a sound card built in im going to figure out how to use it on your digipi think it would pair up nicely without having to add much to the pi.
hi justin, i don't have one myself, but it looks cool. if it's an cm108 implementation with integrated gpio, you can edit the direwolf .conf files to use the cm108 chip. DigiPi doesn't overtly support these - yet
It is that chip i just dont know enough about codeing to implement it but that aioc is pretty popular @KM6LYW

Took another run at digipi today to see if I might fall in love now that I have a radio with built in USB sound card/cat control with the QRPLabs QMX+. I wanted to create a streamlined kit for impromptu field operations. Using the same WSJT-X interface was a game changer over the FT8CN Android option. Yes, I now have to carry a tiny Rpi Zero 2W but I can drop the burner Android phone and use the iOS phone I already have in my pocket. Plus I can run the Rpi Zero off the same tiny TalentCell 12v+5v USB battery!
tried installing last night on Dragon OS with NO luck, what version of glrpt do you recommend for HamPi_v1.0
hi, im running a digipi with an audioinjector z and a rpi zero w2. ft8 works fine so i know the board is setup ok. the aprs though... when i start the igate or digipeater the log shows i am connected to the server. when i send a packet from aprsdroid it doesn't show any errors in the direwolf.log nor on aprsdroid and my radio keys up on 144.390. What i don't have is any incomming packets. Nor do my packets show on the digipi. any ideas?
Click on "PktLog" to see everything direwolf is doing and to see if you're receiving anything.
@@KM6LYW i just opened direwold.Log. it showed a little more info. It just shows several failed server connection attempts then finally a successful one and that I was verified. It also shows where aprsdroid sent beacons and I can send a message that shows in the log. Just doesn't receive anything.. shouldn't it receive Web connections?
@@KM6LYW I checked that. It showed my successful connection to the server and that I'm verified. It shows my outgoing beacons and messages but nothing coming back. I even tried to message wxbot and didn't get anything back. My radio does key up for beacons and messages. If I send a packet from another radio it does show up but shouldn't I be getting web packets also?
@@juggalizzle75 No webchat wont get web-packets unless you turn that on in ~/config/aprsd/aprsd.conf (and reboot). You need to confirm you're receiving somehow. it sounds like direwolf likes your audio card. this discussion is probably best for the DigiPi mailing list too.
@@KM6LYW I will see if I can join that list
I had some real troubles with PTT.. After much tearing apart, checking, etc., I finally replaced the image to find it worked! ..... Until I went through the Initialization stage. After many attempts, I finally discovered that if I change ANY of the "USB-connected radios only" settings, PTT will not work on a non USB device (I'm setting this up for Anytone-Raspberry Pi5.
I don't understand, can this connect to a Winlink server on HF? I have been using VARA.
Does Woad send files?
Deans... old school rc guy I'm guessing. I have a few ziplock bags full of deans ultras since I recently switched to xt60 (because modern chargers and lipos all use xt60 anymore). I'm local... let me know if you need some more Deans for your experiments lol.
Yup! Electric planes... 50amp range. Deans are increasingly hard to get, at least good ones.
"full quieting" sounds a little close to "Li'l quietly" over the radio, so that's confusing! I guess I was actually coming in clearly when I radiochecked for the first time yesterday... Also, the live bumper is great, haha! You're a good player! 73
Nice!
FYI - 12V is not in the USB power delivery standard, most batteries will not be able to supply it (read the specs). Even if you buy a 12v trigger the source will not negotiate. 13.8V is a PD standard, and most 12V ham stuff is rated 12v+15% = 13.8v -- CHECK your manual
Yes, it's really up to the battery to supply the requested 12V. The nitecore battery manual specifically states 5V/3.2A, 9/2.2A and 12V/1.68A on the PD port. In fact, those numbers are printed on the battery itself as well.
I come for the music and jesse's girl
I think I did Jessie's girl??? great choice in any event
Just what the hobby needs… another showboat.
I made up an MT3608 boost converter for 12.0 volts exact for my QMX Qrp rig ...maybe i,ll try one of these also The QMX draws 1.0 amps which is the limit of the mt-3608 I like a little headroom when i can get it,.Not that the 3608 has a problem but will try one of these just for giggles.73' jim KB1PFL
Craig I used a adafruit board that let me charge D74 from any usb C PD device including batteries.
lol i run my extra fridge off usbc from a 65w gan wall charger. runs into a 5s lipol powerbank which runs around 20v, and then supplys about 20vdc to the fridge. its one of those 54 liter 12/24v dc fridges for cars but i put all my drinks in there and it uses..... waitfor it... 115wh/day. i figure its so efficient if it keeps me from opening my regular fridge more than once per day it probably ends up saving power overall since its so efficient. i wrapped it in aluminum foil tape to reduce the thermal emissivity. i am finding so many uses for usb-c
