Hammer Throw: The nasty over-rotation. Master Athletics, M60, 6/2024
hey man, i'm new to hammer throw and i have always struggled with my balance in the rotations, until i recently noticed a very important error in my technique, very similar to yours. I noticed that when you land with your right foot after each turn, you land facing the same direction as you started (at 0 degrees), but you actually need to try to land facing your right side (at 270 degrees). This helps to prevent lifting your right foot too much while turning, which can result in over turning, and you can even feel more balance once you fix the movement. Additionally, landing at 270 degrees gives you more time and space to accelerate the hammer even more, since the only moment where the hammer can be accelerated is when you have both feet on the ground. keep it up man
What is your highest mitar
The weight is so much faster than the hammer. You need to bend your legs and sit down on it out of the back of the ring.
Nice practice Court👍🏼
The heavy weight is a beast! Roughly how far were you throwing with the 9kg Dan?
Not very long, felt a bit awkward to throw. No feeling for the implement. 12.30 it was.
Télo musí níž. Jste tam moc vysoko.
❤
I had to see my chiropractic doctor because I was over rotating. It’s the hip 🎉 I started doing better rotations after chiro session
Ohh, my hip is also kind of failing, but was failing even before I started to throw hammer, before the pandemic. So I should stop over rotating also to save the rest of my hip.
Love the early morning training! I did notice that the lower you are out of the back of the ring the better your foot work is. You may want to try closing your stance at the back of the ring too. Try setting up with your feet closer together. Your over rotation in turn one is pulling you off balance but you are correcting somewhat before your release. I would be working on slow one arm turns with light weight to get your balance back. Focus on stepping into the turns quickly and placing the right foot down earlier. Here is a video of a hammer drill that helped me alot : ua-cam.com/video/iAAXKf98H5Y/v-deo.html . You don't have to leave the hammer on the ground if you don't want to. The foot work and balance drill is the what to look for.
@@jonsweetin Thank you very much for the input! I will try to improve, let's see if it happens! And yes, early morning throws are nice, it's me and the birds, and sometimes a couple of rabbits are on the field!
Great job Dan!
Thanks!
@@grumpythrower239 Throwing 7k in M60 is tough man. Why are you not throwing a 5 k? Was it a meet requirement?
@@jonsweetin Yes, was no Master classes, just senior and junior classes. Kind of like to throw with the 7kg also, you can really feel the implement.
Hi when you turn both feet should turn. Not just your left foot.good luck nigel
Did you get a chance to watch any of the World Masters championships Dan?
No, was mostly bad weather and also I was quite occupied with other things. I read it was high quality results, 55m plus for the winner in hammer, M60.
Točit, Točit, Točit s koštétem😊. Hlavně vydržet.
some nice throws in there. You were much more balanced when you started slower. Well done👍
Looks good..your work is starting to pay off. I can tell as you got tired you started to stand up more through the turns. As my hammer coach would alway say to me..."You gotta sit down on it!" . :) You can get your balance back if you let the hammer go more left off the wind before moving your left foot into the turn. (i.e. let it get ahead of you before moving). I have same problem when I get tired as well. All the best Grumpy and keep it up!
🎉🎉🎉👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
You had some nice smooth throws early in the video. You could see you were starting slower and had a nice rhythm through the three turns and you were on balance. You could tell you were getting tired towards the end.
Min FAKKING BRODER SAKNAR DIG VARJE DAG RIP 🙏🙏💔💔💔 det känns som det var igår du dog ingen kommer glömma dig😭😭😭
I am glad you said to many throws. As your technique improves your Distance will Improve.it may help to take more time between throws.good luck nhooker
Hey, Grumpy. I admire your dedication. I am training for masters hammer 45-49 also. If you don't mind a few tips. Your form looks pretty good but you are too high through your turns. Your getting pulled off the ground by your third turn and losing your speed. I sometimes do the same thing. I fixed it by letting the hammer go left before I start to turn and by bending my legs more throughout the throw. Sitting down on the hammer is the hardest thing to do for sure. All the best buddy and keep at it! :)
Thanks for the advice! I might start slower next session - to try to gain better control. Then go from there. Good luck with your throwing!
You need to sit more.kettle bell turns.try 3sets x3turns have short rest and repeat.this is more effective training and you dont spend most training collecting hammer do not release kettle bell.know you are warmed up and ready to throw ten throws max.hope this helps.
First turn 80 percent ok nh.
I like the relaxed swings.your body position is to upright.solution when you swing hammer when it passes in front of you it should be 2feet off ground.this will change your posture and allow you to sit more. best luck nh
@@nigelhooker-bd3fn i like the orbit in the throw starting at 1.13, its a bit from the ground in the first turn, then it gets steeper.
I like your style.
Your first turn is to fast.slow it down.try to do more drills i use an 8kg kettle bell.dont throw just drill.
Try practicing turns with 8kg kettle bell .this really improved my hammer.best luck nigel hooker.
😢
Throwing pain free at our age Dan is a very positive thing! I think you mentioned during the throws that you were starting off too quickly, I agree. Maybe start the first throw slower and just build up your speed?
Part of the problem is that I start to lean back already in the first turn. This is an old sin, I should be able to adjust it.
Hi Dan, it sounds as if you have decided not to compete in the World Masters Championships. I hope you still get the opportunity to go watch some of the events, I am sure it will give you motivation to continue with your training.
Correct, no WMAC for me.
Your center of gravity is way to much in the front. You need to get into a sort of sitting position and lean back. Hope that makes sence!
Thanks for the input! It makes sense, I just have to convince my body to do it!
@@grumpythrower239 wishing you best of luck.
Instrustive vid!! Thank you !
thank you for your videos my friend; I enjoy watching them. I've just started throwing the hammer, I'm in the M60 class too from New Zealand. Your vids are great!
Thank you! Hammer throw is a quite fun challenge. I wish you good luck!
I love your name, grumpythrower haha
Good luck for the competition Dan, let us know how you get on.
Great to see you throwing discus again. I can understand why you were cautious but it is clear you have the potential there to throw much further when you feel ready to do so.
Yes, will progress slowly. Guess I could throw 30m standing still now, but no need to risk an injury.
Hi from France, i don't know you, (you don't know me neither, of course 😂😂) but i want to say thank you for sharing your training session. I have the intention to teach hammer to my futur young athlete for the next season, in september. So i learn. Aha. Thx YP
@@W-P_C Hi, you are welcome!
Woohoo🎉🎉🎉🎉
Well Done Dan. Was the event just for Masters, or was it for other age groups as well?
Thanks! Was 17yr+. Different hammer groups, master athletes in one of them.
Is this beautiful throwing range attached to your home?
Hi, it belongs to the regional athletic organisation. My club is a member of that.
Good job!!, Im throwing in San Deigo next sat. first time in M70
Good luck!
Well done Dan. I had my first M60 discus competition of the year tonight and threw 32.71m. I was second in the M60 class behind my good friend Stuart Ryan who threw 48.64m to lead the British M60 rankings.
32.71 is good and likely better than I would throw today if I tried, but better not try due to my shoulder.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Rooting for u 🎉🎉🎉
Good luck in the competition Dan, let us know how you get on 👍
Well done Dan, that looked like a good consistent session. I think sticking with two turns is a sensible idea.
🎉🎉
YOU GOT THIS!!! IAM rooting for U
Hi Dan, I think the over rotation may be caused by the fact that you tend to turn with a very straight left leg, which pushes you back away from the hammer. I know at our age that keeping the legs bent is not easy 😀 Keep working at it, I can see how you have improved over the last year or so 👍
watched your videos while look for a better glove....try staying down on the ground when you throw...you are popping up...
I am also an M60 player like you. I'm sending you a message from Japan. I suspect you are accelerating as you raise the hammer. I think if you accelerate when you swing the hammer down, you'll be able to turn more smoothly. Let's continue to do our best together.
How many mettrs sir?
Not that long, about 32m. The goal is to rotate better, while not provoking my injured shoulder.
Ser ju bra ut, när är första tävlingen?
Troligen i juni.
There's that speedy Swedish warm up again! 😀
Yes, also extremely important with the warm-up, preventing injuries and gets the body in shape for the big throws! 🙃
