Reading presently.....Human Acts
@@somalaskar7811 ready some tissues!
Excellent video. Thank you so much. I put White Book at the top (I’ve read all except Convalescence), but I understand your reasons. I also had some trouble with Greek Lessons.
the white book is definitely a favorite as well! and yes, i'm still mourning the fact that i waited so long for a greek lessons translation, only to be disappointed by it 😢 thanks for being here!
I read Human Acts this year and I really enjoyed it! Chapters one and two were already so emotional and I just love her writing (also shoutout to the translator Deborah Smith). I read The Vegetarian quite some time ago.. I just remember it being quite weird but liking it. Time for a re-read I would say! Excited to hear that there is going to be a new book coming out, will definitely read that too 😊
@@Fuonaa i honestly wish i knew korean because i feel like a lot of han kang's writing is lost in translation, as good as it may be now. and yes, weird is an understatement for the vegetarian, isn't it 😂
I'm planning to dive into Han Kang's work soon! Hearing your insights has inspired me to pick them up-it sounds like it’ll be quite the emotional journey.
oh it definitely will! i'm certain at least one of those books will make you cry kekeke
Not a big deal, but on your thumbnail, you have Human Acts as your worst and Greek Lessons as your best.
@@davidsheriff9274 intentional! to throw people off 😝
I am a big Han Kang fan too, and I didn't even finish Greek Lessons, I bailed after about fifty pages. If you're interested in South Korean writers, have he heard of Shin Kyung Sook? She is most famous for a book called "Please Look After Mom" which ironically I didn't like at all,it was a little too sweet and syrupy for me, but take a look at "The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness", "Violets", and "I'll be Right There".
@@davidsheriff9274 glad a fellow han kang fan understands! greek lessons was such a letdown 😣 but forgivable, since it's one of her earlier novels, just translated later i haven't read any of shin kyung sook's books but thanks for letting me know i'll be right there is great, i have a copy of it with me! i'll add that to my list soon 😇
@@silveroceanletters 👍
I just heard that she has a new one coming out called "We Do not Part" I just pre-ordered it.
yes! i mentioned it towards the end of the video. can't wait!!!
@@silveroceanletters My bad, I guess I should probably watch the videos before comment on them 😁
Great list! Love your videos!
@@tomasrigout so sweet of you to say, thank you!
Lovely, as always! I read The Vegetarian upon your expert recommendation, and yes, it was transformative for me and I think about it often. As frustrating as it was to read about the protagonists demise, I realised that for her it wasn't a break down, but a break through. Showing us that to change, to transform, and thereby separating yourself and breaking off from your family, isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on who is leaving that unit. I also bought Human Acts, but it is on my TBR list. A book about suffering isn't very appealing to step into, but now that you've said she writes so softly about suffering, I might finally be tempted to finally start reading it. Congratulations to Han Kang!
grateful to be ur book buddy! still have u to thank for claire keegan, so we're even ❤ AND YES, the way han kang just so tenderly depicted something so atrocious made it all the more heartbreaking 😢
I relate to this 😂 I feel like I always have a few books (physical and audiobook) on rotation
it isn't the ideal scenario for me but sometimes life really be that way hahaha 😢
I personally prefer storygraph! You can give half points/stars which I think is really vital, and I love the statistical overview. But I haven’t used goodreads for many years, so I don‘t really know if they have recently updated the features. The love/hate relationship with poetry is so real! I find it so hard to even pick up a collection and then read it all the way through. The struggle also starts with finding the right collection and then also being in the mood for it 😅 I‘ve been meaning to read some of Ocean Vuong‘s poems as I enjoyed On Earth We‘re Briefly Gorgeous. Maybe knowing that I like his writing style will help me to actually pick up a collection and also finish it.
not into star ratings but yes!!! the statistical overviews i see a lot might pull me onto the storygraph train keke thanks for that! as predominantly fiction readers like ourselves, the shift is really hard to make 😢 but once you're in the groove, the reading is smoother! and aaaaaahhhhhh yes ocean vuong is also one of the very few poets i read so yes yes yed x10000, do check out his poems!
Kaylaaaaaa! Thank you for this vlog <3 it was so refreshing to watch. And hahaha the love-hate(?) with poetry is real! :)

Baguio was my families holiday spot but I haven't been in over a decade now. It's interesting to see what it looks like now
@@juliemorrow174 i'm glad we went during the off season because i heard it gets superbly populated during the holidays! still worth visiting, will definitely want to go back again one day 🥰
As I was watching this I had to really dig inside my mind to remember what book I was reading while still on holiday but that I've neglected ever since coming home. It's very sad that I've made in nearly impossible for myself to read anywhere else but during vacation because I love to read books.
@@Difrapuccino must be harder too since you're a working gal and you have little kiddos around as well 😔 but then reading isn't a race, as you've kindly reminded me in one of my videos. we read at our own pace and that's okay 🥰
I started Infinite Jest so many years ago like in 2010.. got like 300 pages in and was confused😅 I actually kept this book on my shelf until the beginning of this year and finally admitted that I will never finish this. The thought of having to start from page 1 again also made me dread this even more because lets be honest, I obviously do not remember anything from this book. Murakami‘s 1Q84, however, was a temporary dnf for me and I finally finished it a couple of years ago. Not my favorite but glad I actually finished it after it had collected dust for so many years. Infinite Jest is just way too daunting and I don‘t think it‘s for me.
300 pages is a humongous feat! and i know exaaaactly how you feel kekeke infinite jest is definitely a book you'd like to read if you want to hate reading hahahahhaa but glad you finished 1q84! also a monster!
they have such a calming effect <3

i’m currently reading 37 books!
37 is insane!
Congrats on 200 subscribers! I am not monogamous with my books. I normally have 3 books going at once. I have one that I read in the morning while i sip my coffee, one that i read before bed, then a poetry book or short story collection that I may randomly pick up when i have just a few minutes or on the weekends. I tried to read only one book at a time before the next but that never worked for me. I DNF'd The Secret History twice but for some reason i still keep in on my shelves. I keep trying to force myself to want to read it again because so many people love it. I feel like I need to just bit the bullet and read it all the way through. P.S. i like the mini mic :)
i should definitely do polyreading more often, it seems to really help with the reading slump. and yes, i still think The Secret History is worth the read, albeit a torturous one 😂 thanks for being here, Christina!

I can read 10 books in a month and sometimes i read 2 books in a month. It all depends on the type of book and how dense it is. I purposely slowed down my reading in recent years because I found that at the end of the year after reading over 100 books, I realized I didn't remember MOST of them. My husband only reads one book a month on average, and he remembers everything he reads because he reads slowly and really immerses in the story. I'm not where I want to be with slow reading yet but I'm getting a little better. I didn't like My Year of Rest and Relaxation. I noticed that everyone on the planet seemed to love it and i felt like something was wrong with me LOL. I don't get on with that author in general. Don't worry about how much you read. It's not a race. :)
oh, and great job on the book shelf!
@@radiantchristina thank you for this! i'm definitely like your husband for sure. i get hyperfixated on a certain book and let myself wander in the world long enough for it to stay with me forever. a savorer, if you will. but yeah, nothing wrong with that at all, i realized. slow readers are readers too. 🥰
What a great selection of books! I'm happy to see a Jeanette Winterson book on your list. I am working my way through all of her works little by little. Just Kids is a favorite of mine also. I didn't expect to love it as much as i did. Rebecca was another surprise love for me. I put it off for years and when i finally read it , I loved it so much that i spent the rest of that year reading all of Du Maurier's novels - Frenchmen's Creek is my favorite so far..such a fun read.
@@radiantchristina you have wonderful taste, too! i haven't read Frenchmen's Creeks but putting that on my list for sure 🥰
omg!!! jeanette wintersonnnn i respect it 🎉🎉
she is my hero!
The only 10 books that changed my life are the ones written by Steven Erikson called "Malazan Book of the Fallen"
never heard of this series! but that's probably because i'm not well-versed in fantasy fiction
@@silveroceanletters it's one of the hardest to get through but also very philosophical and funny. As I said, it has changed my life
The audience wants to know about those letters m'am. Also, I'm gonna say Baek Isak or Hoonie 😔🤧 I wonder, can a case be made for similarities between the tenderness of compassion and companionship between Beak Isak and Sunja, and Patti and Robert? While I love Pachinko, and have read similar tales like 'Wild Swans', one of the novels that never gets it's due in this multigenerational genre is The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. I read it more than ten years ago, so I haven't held it up to the light in a while, but I remember it being very tender and full of determination.

Hello from Karori Aotearoa❤
hello from the other side of the world!
My year of rest and relaxation is my favorite book, I lived like a hikikomori for a little over two years, I self isolated myself and self medicated just like the main character during that time I thougt that I was the only person in the world that was living that way, I read a lot during that time and was really hopping to find something like this so when two years later I found these book it was like a huge much needed therapy session. U look great in red by the way, hope your channel and shelf grows a lot ❤
that must've been a difficult time for you, i'm happy to know that's in the past. may you never find the need to self-isolate and self-medicate again!
My reading habits fluctuate between reading three books a month, to reading 0 books a year. It depends on what medium you take your medicine from so to speak. Reading for me is a way to immerse and escape. Sometimes reading just doesn't cut it, other times.only books can drag you away from your thoughts. I'd say, don't put pressure on yourself to read a certain amount, as long as it's fun, you'll keep it up.
thank you so much for that reassurance! there's definitely pressure to keep up with everyone else, especially when it comes to something i call a "hobby" but i have to unlearn that. at the end of the day, who cares!!!
I click in this video because the thumb was beautiful and the channel name uugh soo good! Subscribe in the second I saw your shelf: Suga, Van Gogh, Dalí ❤ we have such similar taste that I have read all of the books apart from the poetry collection that I will try to read as soon as possible. I really enjoy hearing you talk about your experience and why they are your favs. There’s an author that I like call Jennifer McMahon (some people like her others dislike haha) but during this video I have the feeling that u might like, my favorite from hers is call “don’t breath a word” it’s like a thriller with magic surrealism (but the very dark type). Wishing u a lots of sucess in booktube ❤ can’t wait to see more content from silver ocean letters 😍
