I've been wanting to do the Oregon Timber Trail for years, but due to trail conditions and wildfires, its remained elusive. In July 2024 I set out with the Grand Depart to tour the Oregon Timber Trail. As usual, things don't go according to plan.

Butte Camp Bikepacking Bonanza: A Mount St. Helens Bikepacking Adventure

Rob and Ember have wanted to climb the Butte Camp route on Mt. St Helens for ages! Rob and I decided to turn this into a bikepacking adventure and invite Paul who we met out a rainy day ride back in February. This would be Pauls first climb and second bikepacking trip with us. We had great weather on the first two days and a wet ride home. Overall the trip was a lot of fun!

You really came to Tennessee ?
"I frickin stopped on the trail because of a bird, and fell into a cactus" ... an AZT Story 😂
Inspiring, gonna go ride trails now.
Great video. The terrain and mountains were amazing
You need to be fly fishing , that would create some laughs .
Snuggling? Wet re-entries? Is tha, Wait, do I hear a banjo solo over that mariachi music? 😂
Somebody on Reddit recommended you guys. So I subscribed. I’ve done all these roads on the S. Island as well as all over the Oly Peninsula. Most of the Wet Side of the Cascades, in fact. I know Salty and need to do some of HIS routes. BTW I always use an alky stove, You can get fuel anywhere!
You know that way you are? Keep being that way.
You found my bottle hahaha I lost it over the summer It’s friend is “catch up”. I still have it
Thanks for the vid. Excellent piece!
You guys are awsome
Good job on both your accomplishment and presentation! It's been many years since my last epic bike trip and you helped me to relive that a bit. Thanks!
What tent is that ??
I lived in AZ for the last decade, moved to CA a few weeks ago and this makes me miss home so bad. The heat, the cacti and the dust on all those mini trails within AZT makes me fondly think of all the hiking I did over my time in AZ! Thank you capturing this amazing journey, hoping to someday be able to ride the AZ trail myself!
Just curious what the two of you do for a living and how much vacation/pto time you can take off per year...
Hey! Thank you for watching. We actually get this question a fair amount while we are out riding. Rob is a property manager/handy man, so he gets to dictate much of his schedule. He works hard when he isn't playing. I work in healthcare IT and have been with the same company for 14 years, so I have pretty good PTO benefits now. I work a standard 40-50 hour week. This year, I probably took about 4.5 weeks off, depending on business needs, I probably could have taken more. Also, importantly, neither of us have kids... For a long time my PTO was between 3-4 weeks, sadly, by United States standard this is considered pretty good. So to do these trips there was a lot of planning and intention. I looked at it like, I had 2 week long trips per year, and I could do a handful of three day weekend trips... then just take the fullest advantage of holidays and weekends. We also have the benefit of living in the PNW, specifically near the border of Oregon and Washington where there is a ton of bikepacking options. It's easy to find a weekend trip that is only 1-2 hours from my doorstep. When weather is good during the summer, we are spending pretty much every weekend bikepacking/hiking/climbing, etc... Rob and I are now both in positions which allow us to have a lot of flexibility around PTO, it wasn't always this way, and I recognize we are lucky to have this privilege. Cheers!
@@pnwbikepacking Nice! I'm a PNW guy born and raised. Currently live in central Oregon. Been watching your videos for a while now. I did some road riding but have veered away from it due to increasing dangers of inattentive or impaired drivers. I've got a Specialized Rockhopper that I'm looking to outfit for bikepacking for 2025. Thanks for responding, and have a great holiday week!
Real fun to watch, I live in Superior and it is a mountain biking paradise with very few mountain bikers.
Awesome! I hope to come back to that part of AZ and do more bikepacking! Thanks for watching!
Reminds me of the Big Lebowski 😂
What is the camera mount you have attached to the camelback?
I use a falcam F38 quick release. It's been pretty good generally speaking. Pretty comparable to say the Peak Designs capture clip. I use the Falcam though because I use their quick release plate with their tripod. Hope this helps.
love the mixed media with your photography pics included! thanks for the content!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I've been on several trips now with my BarYak Ultra 35. I am really liking it! Super solid and stable, no movement on chunkier singletrack.
Set it on your table that you put on your tire. Then run the heat hose directly into the tent . Lone peak makes a diesel heater port?
Your videos are unreal!
Thanks!!
where are you? miss your videos!!!
Just got back from the Stagecoach 400 with Rob and Paul so stay tuned for a new video!
We need a bike set up tour of your guy’s bikes.. please.
One of these days :)
Locking skewers may come in handy.
Maybe cycling attire workers will design 2 &1 riding short/pants for such as yourself, a bike packer; Shorts for warmer temps then zip on the lower leg length and the ankles that can be tightened to prevent being caught in chain rings/chains for those colder temps. I have a pair, but it is titled for hikers.
Collapsible portable cots may help you out; they lift you up a tad from the cold grounds. Most important when doing long distance bike travel; Food (nutrition) and a good sleep system.
I absolutely love your videos! I’ve been binge-watching them over the past few weeks and can’t get enough. I’m from the PNW too and used to be an avid hiker and backpacker, but an injury about six months ago put that on pause. To rebuild my strength, I started biking-and now I’m completely hooked. Biking has become a huge part of my life, and I ride everywhere! This winter, I’m training for my first bikepacking trip in the spring, and your content has been a major source of inspiration.
Awesome! Glad that you're enjoying the content! Which route are you thinking next year?
@pnwbikepacking i was thinking of doing the trip from portland to tillamook via the trask trail. If you have any suggestions on a good first bikepacking trip, I am all ears. If you ever wanted to do a video taking someone for their first bikepacking trip, I would be so down for that.
@@WalkHikeExplore Check out Portland to Timothy Lake. It's magical!
hi🌷 Looks SO COOL MAN!! 😎 Would you possibly be interested in doing the GMBR in’Spring iof 25 ? I’m an older Lady but Bad Ass ! I want to go to Az. too! Someday! Lmk Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! ~ take care 🥳 Cheryl
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
Outstanding effort fellas! You are inspiring others!
What size does the fish suppose to be to eat?
So fun and nice vibes. Thanks a lot for your movie. I rode from Seattle to Spokane last May during a 4 day ride mostly along the XWA. It was fantastic. Spent a night in the same motel in Northbend, totally soaked too ;);)
What bike frame are you riding on this trip?
Revel El Jefe (Formerly Why Cycles El Jefe). It was great for the ride.
Loved the video, keep up the great work and the amazing storytelling
Thank you!
This is bikepacking. @CADEmedia should take note
What bike are you riding? 120mm Fork?
In this video I was on a Surly Karate Monkey, I was running a Pike with 140mm! These days I run 120mm on my hardtail and 130mm on my full suspension
This was great to watch! Where can we see more of your photos?
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I don't really post my photos anywhere and make them public. I may look into th at in the future!
Missing your videos!!!!!
What bike do you have? And fork travel?
This ride was on my trusty Why Cycles El Jefe with 120mm fork!
Mosquitoes repellent...
What bike brand do you ride? 120mm fork?
If you're going to stay at motels you can pack a whole lot lighter. Just a credit card will do. Pussy.
What bike are you and paul using? Thanks for making these fantastic videos.
Hey! Hope your enjoying making your way through all the videos! For this ride, I was on a Why Cycles (Now Revel) El Jefe, 120mm up front with 2.6 Rekons. Love this bike. Paul was on a Niner Air with 120mm front suspension. Not sure which tires he was rocking. He was pretty happy with his set up too. I agonized over full suspension (Transition Spur) vs. my hard tail. Both would have been great, but I think the hardtail was probably the better choice for this route given some of the longer water carries.
Dude can I marry your channel? Its fucking awesome.
Dude, this was brilliant. Thanks for making this.
Subscribed! whats parkers handlebar cradle thingo called?
Hey Gmack! Parker is rocking a Salsa Anything Cradle with a Hyperlite Mountain Gear dynema dry bag. I would advise AGAINST using that dry bag for a front cradle, at least as the primary bag. It's a bit too fragile in my opinion. Parker got a hole in his after like 2 trips. It might be good as a redundant waterproofing solution. Put the dynema bag inside a more durable stuff sack.
@@pnwbikepacking But his cradle works all good? I'd never get a dyneema dry bag. I don't think I'd buy anything dyneema again personally.
@g_mack cradle is solid!
@@pnwbikepacking legend thank you so much.
Thank you for watching. Garrett just launched his video showcasing his perspective on the OTT. He did an awesome job, not to mention HE DID IT ALL ON A DROP BAR FULLY RIGID BIKE! Check out his video here: ua-cam.com/video/vDhA5U0doqY/v-deo.html
