Klickitat Bikerafting Adventure

  • Since our first bikerafting trip on the Deschutes River, Rob and I have been scheming our next river adventure. We ended up doing a bikerafting loop on the Klickitat River. In total we probably rafted about 17 river miles of Class I and II. Next year we may try to extend the length of rafting section.
    We did the ride in Mid September where the river was running very low (at the lowest recommended CFS ~980). We didn't have too much trouble, but I had run the river a few months prior (without a bike) and there were noticeably less exposed hazards.
    Overall this was a super fun trip. Thanks for watching!

      @@pnwbikepacking Yeah, we have floated it a couple of times, putting in at Service Creek and taking out at Clarno. About 48 river miles over 3 days/2 nights. Depends on the river levels, but lots of class 1s and a few class 2 and 2+ when we did it. Could probably bike raft it, but possibility of a repeat on the Lower Deschutes. • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching Richard! Yeah, you can purchase these boats with TiZips which allow you to have that gear storage. It comes at an additional cost, but for bikerafting it is so useful. These boats are made by a company called Alpacka. More specifically, we got the Caribou model which is designed for bikerafting. Hope this helps!

  • @andreallanbusarello
    @andreallanbusarello 3 місяці тому

    Nice video Chris! Have you ever tried to paddle your packraft without a bike attached to the bow? I am looking at the same model but I want to use it for some day trips without my bike as well.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! Yes, I have done a bit of paddling without the packraft, including this very same section on the Klickitat. It definitely changes the handling. Without the weight of the bike, the front end moves around a lot more... it's almost kind of squirrley. Keep in mind, I don't have anything else to compare this to.
      If you plan on doing pretty chill stuff (no more than Class 2) I'd probably go with the Caribou. If you were thinking of getting spicier and doing MORE paddling without the bike, I'd email Alpacka and see what they would recommend.
      Hope this helps!

      @@pnwbikepacking Thanks for the info! I ended up getting the Wolverine as it fitted like a glove and I want to run class 3 too. I went to a lake today to test it with my bike strapped on the bow and it works fine, probably not as good as on the Caribou but does the job.

    Hey guys, I’m up here in Wenatchee, Wa. An overnighter I had planned this weekend has been changed because of the smoke. Now we are going to ride tarmac around Mt. Rainier over two days.
    Anyways, curious if you two have had much experience packing bikes to hike a section? Due to rd closure we have to hike 3.5 mile on the wonderland trail. We have to have the bike broken down to do this per NPS. Thanks for any input.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  Рік тому

      Hey Nicholas, apparently Rob made a lengthy response that for some reason isn't displaying haha. I personally have not loaded a bike onto/into a backpack and schlepped it around for 3.5 miles. Doing the Arizona Trail is on my list which requires a walk through the Grand Canyon with the bike on the back, so I see this in my future at some point! My advice to you would be, spend a few hours practicing how the hell you're going to strap the bike to the backpack so it is moderately comfortable. Check out Laels AZT video at 22:47 at how she packed it. Alternatively, there are a few awesome routes close(ish) by if you're willing to drive a little further.
      Rob and I goofed off out in this area last week and caught some fish at Deadman Lake last weekend: bikepacking.com/routes/goat-mountain-overnighter/
      I also really love the Mount St. Helens Epic weekender: bikepacking.com/routes/mount-st-helens-epic/
      This upcoming weekend Rob and I are planning on doing the first part of the MSH Epic Weekender but will deviate and head north up to Iron Creek campground, so if you venture down that way, we may see you!
      Good luck and have a great time on whatever you decide!!!
