Continental Divide Trail Southbound Thru-Hike | Post-Trail Gear List
From June-November of 2022, I thru-hiked the Continental Divide Trail from Glacier National Park at the Montana/Canada border south to Crazy Cook Monument in New Mexico. My thru-hike spanned 5 states, 134 days, 5 pairs of shoes, 10 pairs of socks, 4 zeroes and 21 moose.
Before I left, I posted a video going over the gear I was bringing, but now that I'm back, I'm here to talk about how that gear worked out for me. What I loved and hated, the items that lasted and the ones that failed completely. Did my 11 pound base weight serve me well? How did my custom pack last? Did I survive with a flimsy foam sleeping pad? There's only one way to find out.

CDT Gear List (SOBO) 11 lbs / 4.9 kg
Переглядів 11 тис.2 роки тому
Soon, I'm embarking on a southbound (SOBO) thru-hike of the 2800 mile Continental Divide Trail. In this video, I go through the lightweight gear I'm bringing on this trek. Since I'm starting in Glacier National Park, I will start with an ice axe, micro-spikes and some other specific snow travel gear that I'll eventually send home. My new pack gives me the option of removing the hip-belt and sta...
My Attempt at Healthy Stoveless Resupply Boxes (CDT)

Soon I'm starting a southbound thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail, heading southbound from Glacier National Park. I tried to put together some healthier resupplies than in the past, and I include recipes and an example of everything that will go into one of my boxes. I'm cold-soaking this trip, but the dinners can absolutely still be heated up on a stove. They are mostly gluten-free, and...
Hiking 80 Miles Alone in the Sonoran Desert

In January of this year, I decided I needed a break from the cold Northern Arizona winter and headed south to the Black Canyon Trail near Phoenix. I backpacked the 80 mile trail in 5 days, traversing through the Sonoran Desert as a solo female hiker. Even though I was hiking by myself, I was constantly reminded that civilization wasn't far away. The trail parallels I-17, goes through popular BL...
Lightweight Backpacking Gear List (11 lb / 5 kg)

If you're new to lighter gear, working your way towards ultralight or going on a desert winter backpacking trip, this lightweight backpacking gear list keeps comfort and warmth in mind without an extreme base weight in either direction. This is the gear I brought on a January trip of the 80 mile Black Canyon National Recreation Trail in central Arizona. The BCT took me five days, and I had to c...
Relaxing Hike Through the Gila Wilderness (w/ Wildflower Identification)

On this backpacking trip through the Gila Wilderness, I take you on a relaxing hike a guided wildflower identification tour of the stunning scenery of New Mexico. A perfect trip to bring a beginner or first time backpacker. We hike for 3 days and 45 miles, passing flowers, towering cliffs, and hundreds of river crossings. In May of 2021, I took my cousin on a three day backpacking trip in the G...

    The 2.5 oz diff between those quilts🤔. One of the ratings has gotta be off. How much of a logistical challenge was it to swap. Given the minimal diff in weight I'd imagine it'd be easier to just stick with the 0F and stick a foot out as needed to vent.

    I'd be inclined to ditch the camera (I have) and go with the phone. I carry an extra older phone for emergency use and would shoot video's and photos of the newer one, which in my case is the iPhone 14 max pro. I shoots better quality than the small camera's can, and has from 13mm ultrawide to reasonable a magnified view of 135 mm. It's always interesting to see the choices of other hikers. It gives a lot of ideas that I need to try out. I come from a cycling backround, and have to think more like a hiker. In my case I have always carried gear with "ultra redundancy" as my motto.

    NIce video. I'm soboing the CDT this year and was just surfing. I sobo'd the PCT in 19 and have lots of the same gear you do--including the rain pants. I used Montbell Dynamo rain pants on the PCT but that's a dryer trail. I heard pretty good reviews on the versalite pants so I'm curious how it will turn out. After I get through the bob if they suck I'll just get my windpants sent to me. I also just bought a versalite jacket, I used Frogg Toggs on the PCT but again, the CDT is a wetter trail. Happy trails!

    Thanks for making this! It was very helpful as I'm giving the CDT a go starting this upcoming early May. I also have a SWD pack and love the floating hipbelt. You mentioned the bear hangs being a pain. Was this due to lack of good options to hang it or more so the time needed to set them up and take them down? Did you or anyone you met have issues with mice or other critters chewing up the Ursacks? I know they make that Allmighty one to help with rodent teeth, but it weighs so much more. I'm back and forth between a dcf food bag or just using an ursack xl the whole time. I hope your transition back to home life was nice and smooth. I've had some issues getting back to "normal" life after longer trips. I'm looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks again!

    • @tessmullaney
      @tessmullaney Рік тому

      Hooray on starting the CDT this year, best of luck! It was both issues with bear hanging. Most of Montana/Idaho trees are conifers that don't have many horizontal branches, a lot of them are small and there are tons of dead trees due to pine beetles and fires. That meant that most hangs weren't ideal. I never had an issue with rodents or anything getting into the ursack major. I have only encountered rodents at very popular sites/campground type sites so that's something to keep in mind with campsite selection. Wishing you luck!

    My Montbell jacket drenched me on the inside in one of the first heavy rain storms in Montana. I tested it again in my neighborhood. It kept me dry for about 1 minute before water was running down my body. I kind of wonder if the gear shop on the trail in Montana sells seconds because that's where I got it.

  • @janefreeman995
    @janefreeman995 Рік тому

    Hi I had the very same Montbelle jacket in the same color on the pct. It hardly ever rained but wore it for added warmth sometimes. The zipper broke after relatively little use, so I was pretty disappointed since it was expensive. Plus, it wetted out pretty quickly in the rain. But I did like the pit zips. I made myself a hoodie from alpha fabric from Timmermade. Love it, but my design ended up looking like a "Knight who says Ni!" (Monty Python). Your post has inspired me to plan a new thru.

      @@tessmullaney That is helpful to hear. I am debating between the Movement and Long Haul. On those days with a full food carry when you said that pack was uncomfortable the first few days, how much weight do you think you were carrying? Did you consider the Long Haul? The reason Sawyer filters slow down is because horrible things, bacteria & virus, are growing inside. Bacteria & virus love dark wet places, grow like mold in a bathroom. Everyday I put 2 drops/qt Clorox for 30 minutes in my CNOC dirty water bag then let that chlorinated water pass through the filter. Chlorinated water is safe to drink because it kills bacteria & virus, taste like city water. Sawyer filters only filter bacteria, not virus (like E-Coli).
