  • On this backpacking trip through the Gila Wilderness, I take you on a relaxing hike -- a guided wildflower identification tour of the stunning scenery of New Mexico. A perfect trip to bring a beginner or first time backpacker. We hike for 3 days and 45 miles, passing flowers, towering cliffs, and hundreds of river crossings.
    ---------------------------
In May of 2021, I took my cousin on a three day backpacking trip in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. We had originally planned a four day trip, but we moved faster than expected, and after I had a run-in with some poison ivy, I was ready to get out and under a shower. We crossed the Middle Fork and West Fork of the Gila probably hundreds of times, saw thousands of tadpoles and happened upon a rattlesnake. I enjoyed taking in the abundant wildflowers and after the fact, it has been very enjoyable to go through my footage and identify the plants I didn't know of.
I will readily admit that I am no botanist, so identification may not be 100% accurate. In fact, I'm almost certain I made some mistakes. I did my best, and would be happy to hear from anyone who has more insight into any of these amazing plants.
    TRIP GUIDES//
I've written two trip guides for the loop we hiked.
This one, at my website is longer form and tells more of the story behind our trip:

This one I wrote for the site Backpacking Routes and has all pertinent info to plan your trip:

OH MY! I knew I recognized you! It was odd that a simple gear video on a new channel felt so different...you oozed confidence, which is always nice. Great to see you making the vids, I hope all is well or going in that direction for you and I'll look forward to more video's....who knew you had a real name. Cheers

I've been trying to figure out whether to hike The Gila or not for a few weeks and couldn't make up my mind. This video has me completely convinced! Totally appreciate the shots of native flowers, one of my favorite things to look for. Be on that trail soon! Also nice to have a video of a beautiful without someone talking really loudly the whole time with a selfie stick and not many views hahaha. Cheers!

Some of those canyon shots really reminded me of an XXL version of West Clear Creek.

Great video! I live in Southern NM and love hiking the Gila. Your video is a great snapshot of exactly what someone will see going through the middle fork and beyond. Thanks for sharing it.

What a beautiful place that I never even knew about. You know I loved seeing the flowers, and their names. Looks like you ran into a tadpole convention, too!

Very nice! Thanks for adding the flower names. The Gila is one of my favorite places. I have hiked in the Cliff Dwellings area several times. I plan to do a loop this springs on the Middle Fork starting at Snow Lake.

The Gila is such a gem! I wish I had made it up to Snow Lake, but I'm hoping I'll get to see it when I'm on the CDT this year. Can't wait to be back in the Gila. Enjoy your trip!!

Hey Lotus! 👋 I'm so excited that you started making videos! This was such a great video, now I *really* can't wait for the Gila section on the CDT this year. I appreciated the plant IDs too... can't tell you how many times I've wanted to know what various plants are while hiking. I could only name the lupine and paintbrush out of the plants you showed, so I learned a lot 🙏💕 You rock!

Sugar! Thanks so much 😊 On the AT I carried a tiny wildflower id book with me which was a great way to learn and entertain myself along the way. So much I still don't know though! Oh and I'm also planning on the cdt this year so hope to see you out there :)

Love the flower names edited in! I wish every hiking video did that. Great first video, it put the Gila firmly on my planned trips this year :) looks like y'all had a wonderful time 🌼🌸

Thank you!! I wasn't sure if the flower names would work, but I figured some would appreciate it. Enjoy it out there! It's definitely worth the trip.
