Fix More Waste Less
United States
Приєднався 28 бер 2023
Hi, my name's Justin.
While modding a Wii U (shhhhh) I discovered you could actually repair broken consoles. And not just like cracked scenes, but completely bricked ones as well. So here I am, trying to repair more than I break, with a mod or two thrown in there for good measure. Anything to prolong the life of the consoles I love and those I never got to know but now can.

This sums up to the fact that hot air stations with a fan in the handle are worthless..... I wonder if there is any cheap hot air station with pump/diaphragm available out there
Awesome fix. Have a colleague that's supposed to drop of her ps4 for a clean since that one also sounds like a jet-engine. Now I know what to do. Hope her APU-clamp is there 😅. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks! Best of luck with the clean!
Good advice, nice video. Carry on!
Thanks!
I would like to ask you about these links you added below, can I order them and if the prices are still the same, please answer me. I live in Greece.👍
I don't have the issue with the sound and my PS2 Slim lets my game work properly. That being said, if I move the mechanical part down were you have to put the disc, the laser ribbon is banded up and I'm afraid it could damage my games. I don't know what to do, if I have to repair that or if it's something to not worry about. I'm very ignorant on this topics.
Hi, if the ribbon cable’s bent up high enough it can end up scratching your discs. Something as simple as a piece of tap can help keep it down or super glue. Just be sure not to tap it down too far out. You don’t want the cable pulling on the connector on the laser. It’ll just wear down the ribbon cable leads. You only have to take the top cover off to get to the area you need. Best of luck!
@ thank you so much! Very kind of you! ❤️
You can use cheaper HotAir Station,Just use Low Temperature Soldering Lead,It will remove easy
My ps2 is not working I can turn it on. but when I put a game in, it says in browser reading disc and won’t do anything else any thoughts?
I'd try cleaning the laser to see if that helps. If not, it might need a replacement laser.
"What if in this day and Age... you used Batocera to play all the Games.." Joking aside, i have a pair of Phat ps2's myself one FMB modded. Runs fine, but i honestly use Batocera more for ps2 anymore, less hassle and PS3/4 Controller support. Don't get me wrong, i grew up with with the PS1/2 <and other older systems -_-;;> and i do love the old Systems. Cool vid man, new sub yo
You forgot to update OPL, it's essential to get the new features like exfat support and BDM
Hello, I would recommend that you read out the Syscon. You have the consoles there anyway and the device you need for this costs 4-5$. This way you can say with certainty what is defective. It's true that it's mostly the RSX, but only on the consoles that use a 90nm RSX, on other Ps3s it's other defects like the NEC/Tokins or other components that are easy to replace with hot air because the 65nm RSXs that came out afterwards are relatively robust. You may also be interested to know that the Ps3 in the video has a blue light because there is a disk in it. You can remove this despite the YLOD by switching off the Ps3 at the switch at the back of the power cable, then holding down the eject button and then flipping the switch while pressing the eject button, which puts it into a cleaning mode and the fan turns on and the drive gets enough power to eject the disc. You can also test whether the power supply is working. If the fan doesn't spin up or it stops immediately when you eject the disc, the power supply is broken. It rarely happens, but I've replaced the power supply before and then the YLOD was gone. And only the models with the 4 USB ports are backwards compatible with the PS2. So the models CECHA,CECHB,CECHC and CECHE. Ps1 games play all Ps3 consoles up to the super slim.
Thanks for the tips. I do plan on taking a look at the syscon at some point as I have two that are ylod and am curious if they’re salvageable. Didn’t know that about a game being in it still. I’ll have to pull it back out and see what’s in there!
Recap it. Disc read problem solved.
Somone gave me one they found in the mud recently. I Detailed the heck outta it, and it works/ turns on. but the drive is dead, Im about to do Exactly this, but it would be nice getting the drive working again.
Nice! It’s a good mod, easy and reversible. Games load faster as a bonus!
@@FixMoreWasteLess Oh Yea, I Used to SoftMod the hell outta OG Xbox's 20 yearrs ago, PS2 was Awesome, but once I figured that out Everyone tradded in so I could pimp the xboxs lol
I feel the hot air station is definitely nice but not necessary if you know how to use a butane torch (note the butane torch is very hot and requires a Fair amount of practice to get good results). The addition of hot tweezers makes removing surface mount component's alot easier and faster.
I can fix it for you if you’d like. No charge. Just pay the shipping.
Thanks for the offer. I think I’ll give it a shot first but keep you in mind if I can’t fix it!

What temp was the hot air?
All I know is that something bad happened, and that the parts should not pull of the board like that. Can you explain to me what happened here in a little more detail?
The solder on the pads and hdmi port pins wasn’t fully melted but the solder on the legs of the port was. When the port dropped down it took the pads with it, ripping the traces as well. I should have added leaded solder to the pins like I did the legs (low melt solder would have been even better). Less chance of a catastrophe like this lol.
@@FixMoreWasteLess So TL:DR you overheated the board and melted something that shouldnt have?
No, it wasn’t hot enough or at least the pads for the hdmi connector weren’t hot enough to melt the solder even though the legs of the connector were melted.
I would suggest thermal camera. With regards to multimeter even a cheap multimeter will do
This seemed to do the trick. Thanks!
Nice tip since i will buy sugon or quick heat gun rework for first time . What you suggest me to buy ? Im all new learning on YT . i bought hakko 888d & fx 971 hakko . Microscope and fluxes , solder etc .. . Now going for rework air gun any suggestions?
If you’re willing to spend for it, I’ve had great results with the Atten 862d (this video’s failure not withstanding). The quick 861d appears to be very similar in ability. That said, you can get good results with something cheaper like the Yihua 959d I’ve reviewed before. It’s only like $60-$70 so you can’t expect too much from it but it can work well with enough skill.
Dang... unfortunate
LMFAO, thanks for the upload. Had a good laugh. Next time consider having the board right side up, and heating it up from underneath with your hot air gun. That will allow you to better see what's going on.
Yeah good tip. Considered that way after the fact lol. Doesn’t look like the One X ports have as much exposed plastic either which I’m always concerned about melting
Hi @FixMoreWasteLess I have a question, my PS2 fat was working perfectly without any issues. I disassembled it to clean it, and when assembling it again, one end of the power/eject cable lost the little blue tip on the other end of the cable. Despite being able to put it back in manually by inserting the blue piece, when I screwed everything on again I was getting no power to the power/eject button. Do you think that with a new ribbon cable this may solve the problem, or is it likely that something is wrong with the power supply despite it working perfectly before? Thanks!
I’d start with the ribbon cable first. They’re really fragile. If you have a multimeter you can test the power supply and rule that out. Then you could pretty much narrow it down to the ribbon cable.
@ Thanks for responding! I’ve ordered a couple new ones since some of the ribbon cables I saw online didn’t look exactly like the one that broke (i.e different colors but same number of pins) and also ordered an original one just in case. I’m almost sure it’s the cable because the blue tip fell off one end and it got a bit squished when trying to reinsert it after reassembly. Hopefully it’s not the power supply because everything was working perfectly before I disassembled 😅 Unfortunately I don’t have a voltage tester to rule out the power supply. Thanks again!
How can u manage and solv all problem
Could I use any kind of tape if I don't have the blue one?
I mean for the power ribbon
You mean the little blue piece on the end of the ribbon cable? It’s not really tape just a thicker piece of plastic glued to the outer side. You need it or something similar to keep the ribbon cable wedged in place. Otherwise it just tends to fall out of the power button.
You’re missing a cap right above the encoder. In the middle of the lines that lead to the hdmi filters. 5:02 at the top of screen.
Would definitely recommend a bit of solder wick on bridges like that. Those pins and pads are fragile and a quick wick up and rework is far tidier and less damaging than loads of flux and dragging. Overall though, very nice video. Also agree it's too time consuming to clear those holes.
My 2ds XL has its bottom screen MisAlined which is causing some parts of that area to not function when tapped, id be great to know how to re-aline the screen so it works
You should get an ESR meter to test capacitors. Capacitors go bad in other ways than only losing capacitance. The problem was most likely the bootstrap capacitor that you initially removed.
That’s a good suggestion. I did swap some parts with another power supply I have before going for the replacement but it didn’t lead to anything.
You should just change this channel to Repair Less Buy more, facepalm. I cringe whenever noobs just zoom in to capacitors and ignore other components or in your case, just not check it and just buy. Unsubscribed.
I mean I did test some other areas and swap some parts around with another power supply I have but it didn’t yield any results. An hour of probing and swapping parts just didn’t make for a very compelling video so I decided to cut it out. Sorry you didn’t like it.
Nice
Thanks!
have quick 857dw it's been 4year's working fine and all board including high end GPU don't set your hot air always max temp, the heater will die fast, just around 400 or 380c lastly always use large nozzle
Thank you for this video, replaced the disc array and started getting this issue, tried reseating the cable but no change. Installing a new ribbon cable and now the PS2 works as intended!
The big underchip pad was giving you problems on that IC. The solder wasn't melting on it so the chip couldn't sit down all the way. Watching 12:08 again you can see that the bottom pad might have just got to temperature but still hadn't sat down all the way. Probably takes the longest to get that up to temperature. Can add more flux at edge of chip when heating to make sure it sucks down there. A bit more heat, more patience, maybe more flux or under the board preheating with something like a MHP30/MPH50 could make this easier.
Yeah I’m always worried that too much heat will kill the new chip. Though, I’m not sure that’s ever happened to me so maybe I shouldn’t worry about it too much? Probably worse for the chip to have to keep applying heat over and over again to get it to sit right. Thanks!
@@FixMoreWasteLess It's a risk but these modern boards suck a lot of heat. A longer board area preheat can help too or a small preheater.
A few options I can think of. Flat trace repair pads or thinner wire or bend all the pins connecting with pads down a bit more and leave the ones mating to a trace repair wire alone. I think I would just order trace repair pads and you should be good.
I think I’m going to try using flat pad strips and see how that goes. Hopefully, it’ll sit flush then and I can see about replacing P13!
@@FixMoreWasteLess I think my other comment got deleted but googled rippedtraces. Thry offer a flex pcb with new usb pads that solders in place. Its exactly what you need.
@@FixMoreWasteLess check out rippedtraces. They offer a flex pcb that you solder in place and then solder the usb on top of. It's ingenius use of a flex pcb.
@@FixMoreWasteLess google rippedtraces
@@FixMoreWasteLess UA-cam is nuking my comments but there is a product you can get that is a flexpcb that you solder in place and then solder the usb-c on top.
My PS2 has a similar issue but the only difference is that mine seems to catch signal on the TV/Monitor, but for some reason, it doesn’t have any audio or show any video. This issue has been driving me crazy 😅
Yea all I can figure is to use those flat trace repair pads which you mentioned or even thinner wire. Micro Mage Repairs does this stuff all the time, there may be some good pointers on his vids dealing with this situation. That guy is amazing.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have to check those videos out. I do have some pad strips so I’m thinking about giving it another go with those. Can’t make it much worse, right?
This is the exact problem I'm having on my switch! It's so good to see it might be possible to repair the screen. Thank you so much!
I like how he sets the motherboard on a metal heatsink, while power is going to the board as well as a bunch of other metal stuff laying around. You prob shorted the CPU from the back.
im not even joking as a quick fix i found out which shoulder button wasnt working on my dsi because i couldnt soft reset and blew very light air with my mouth on the shoulder button for like a split second and it started working again. never had to take it apart which was my goal lol.
omg man! that’s crazy but it’s works for me! i’ve been suffering from frozen tray for years so i just use it horizontally the only position it works fine. and now in 2024 with a piece of plastic between two magnets it fixed completely and my fat baby get vertical look again 🥹👍 thanks a lot!
That’s awesome! So glad it helped.
Hi there. Since a couple of weeks, my (first gen) Nintendo Switch's battery is draining fast. Waaaay too fast. I changed the battery, but this didn't help. Do you know what's causing this? If it's a power management chip on the PCB, do you know which, and how to change it? I have some soldering experience, but I'm lacking. Willing to learn though.
It could be the BQ chip that’s near the USBC port. It’s responsible for charging and could cause a power drain. Have you tried recalibrating the switch? It could just be that the indicator is off and needs recalibration. Changing the BQ chip requires a hot air station and a soldering station suitable for microsoldering. www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Support/Nintendo-Switch/Troubleshooting/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-Displays-Incorrectly/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-Displays-Incorrectly-1250816.html?srsltid=AfmBOoq5l4i63Me_ev7U6r4TzOonDTIZV3jGVTwHVH0FVG3C_oALGTlT
