    I'm loving this series, your metal folding is so impressive and your explanations really great. Plus this is a car worth saving I've got a Mk1 Rav4, which needs a bit of welding by the rear sill. The Rav4 triggered the (crossover) SUV movement (which has gone way too far - the isolation they provide from the 'dangerous roads' is just encouraging driving that makes them more dangerous!), maybe not something to celebrate! I'm wondering if the Matra Rancho was one of the inspiring factors in the Rav4 ... is it uni body or is the rear half chassis rails?

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto 13 годин тому

      Thank you! Good point about the Rav4, it was a bit of a revelation at the time that an ‘offroader’ could handle well. The Rancho is technically a unibody in that it doesn’t have separate chassis rails, but the outer shell of the back half is fibreglass. I’m looking forward to finding out what its road manners are like, but there’s a fair way to go yet as you can see 😬

    As a fellow Matra owner ( 89 Espace Quadra ) just wanted to say how much I am enjoying this series. Shows what excellent work you can do with basic tools. It also motivates me to get on and start work on a rusty Mini that I have lurking behind my workshop. Thankfully it looks a lot better in the rust department than what you are tackling. Not having salted roads mean cars have lasted better in New Zealand than in my country of birth.

    In 1976 traveling back home to the isle of man by train there was not one spare inch of ground not covered in plastic wrapped TR7's, please do not think that I mean a couple of hundred cars, there were too many to count several thousand and these were just the ones visible from my side of the train. I really don't think production numbers were the problem. Production quality more likely the issue. I closely inspected the first TR7 to arrive at the main Triumph dealership at Burgh heath Surrey. To say I was appalled would be an understatement panel fit and styling, were the first offences to the eye. I got in the car got down on the floor and checked under the dash and seats. Under the dash there was a wiring loom capable of running NASA never seen anything so ridiculous before but often since. I stuck my hand up to feel this monster and as I feared there must have been half a ton of copper. Cheap and nasty plastic mouldings featured heavily throughout the cab. Under the bonnet hoping to see a sprint engine or better still the six with a sprint style head more disappointment, The country [as tax payers we all had a small share in BL] had been let down on our investment by BL management, who could not have arranged a piss up in a brewery and a bolshie work force controlled by lefty nutters in the pay of the soviets. Over the years the only thing that has grown on me is the styling exterior not interior. I should also add that I spent some time watching the Manx rally that autumn of 76 BL made a bit of a show with maxi's Dolomite sprints TR's and if my memory serves Allegros notable by it's absence from the stand BL's best rally car the Mini. I suppose it could be argued as there were so many privateers running minis BL did not need to bother, still it was a mistake. By the way the mini's were astonishing on those unmade Manx roads they were giving all the big boys a run for their money and the Allegro was going far better than I ever expected.

    • @GrandThriftAuto

      I’m matching what’s left of the car, which is mostly 0.8mm (including the piece in this video). There’s a thicker strengthening piece inside the door post though, which I’ll tackle soon. I don’t have any dollies that fit in the hole in the anvil yet but I wish I did!

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto 5 днів тому

      It’s a budget one from Metz Tools. It works well enough on 0.8mm (it’s better at stretching than shrinking) but for 1.2mm steel I’d advise something heavier duty.

    • @NigelWoods-u6v
      @NigelWoods-u6v 4 дні тому

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto 4 дні тому

      @@NigelWoods-u6v I haven’t. It’s rated up to 1.2mm maximum but I think it would take a long time to make much of an impression on steel that thick, especially shrinking. Metz Tools, Frost etc do heavier duty ones that would probably be a wiser investment if you regularly work with thicker metal.

    Cool, that panel was a "Fitzee cut'n butt". I take it that you are using genuine drmmel cutting discs, my ebay ones turn to dust in about 5 seconds.... if I attached a damp aldi digestive biscuit it would probably cut better. That repair looked good, you are right about grinding the welds, the most likely outcome is thinning the original parent metal and the repair peice. For it's age it's surprisingly free from rust. Coming along nicely, enjoy watching your work.

      I ended up finishing it up on a frosty day 😀 it was flaking so I decided to remove it all inside and out. In African market it was popular did the job. It was the inside that was a nightmare polystyrene with bitumen. In UK climate I wasn't having that. In terms of rust a 412 can put a Matra Rancho to shame lucky mine is solid . Prevention by removing the sound deadening and interior floor bitumen.

    You can always weld the back side to add more strength and then grind back or even leave if not seen. Try to get it tacked in then if using the small welds try over lap them as if doing tig welding you’ll get a better weld and clean copper will aid it from sticking to weld when using as a heat sink. Small things I’ve learnt from welding cars for over 30 years and when fitting on car check back of area to weld to for undercoating or paint and especially waxoyl as waxoyl is highly flammable I found that out when fitting new sills on an old mk3 escort it set fire to rear quarter luckily I always have water spray bottle or air line and a co2 extinguisher to hand. Fire blankets are good especially to cover glass as grinding sparks burn glass badly so does weld splatter

    • @GrandThriftAuto

    A little tip is the mig wire you throw away as can’t use once it’s at end of spool don’t throw away cut into 16 inch pieces then stick one end of the 3 pieces in vice and the other 3 ends in cordless drill and slow run drill till the 3 pieces twist together you can then feed in like a tig welding rod with your other hand as you weld with mig gun it perfect for when you have slightly to big a gap on repair panel or welding up a hole. I’ve used it many times over 30 years and you can use brass to back metal instead of copper when welding up a hole both metals work great.

    Thanks Martin, for a very good, informative video. I recently went along to ‘take a look’ at a tired 1979, Elite 501 finished in gold. Despite not being particularly interested in the Elite, as soon as I saw the car ‘in the flesh’ I soon changed my opinion. The car is incredibly low and sleek - features that aren’t captured well in photographs. I then watched all of your Elite videos to learn a little more about them. I now own a tired 1979 Lotus Elite 501 finished in gold 🤔

      Ha! I should have thought of this - it's no worse than what lots of other people do with buckets of filler... Too late now though, I've made the schoolboy error of showing how rusty it is on UA-cam.

      @GrandThriftAuto About 20 years ago, I bought a Fairlane from a dealer only to find the bottom of the door inside was a sticky tape.

    "This MDF IS 18 mil thick, which is about the width of your finger, if you're still using inches." WHAT??? Why not tell us in inches then, or say it's about the width of your finger - if you're still counting on your fingers!

    I worked in a (NZ) Fiat/Lancia dealership in the early-mid 70's, the exhaust note on the 124 Coupe & Beta was very sexy. The twin cam engine as a jewel especially the late model 1800 which had heaps of torque and the long head bolts didn't stretch. They were all advanced for their time, fun cars to drive and easy to fix if you were familiar with their quirks.

    I worked in a (NZ) Triumph specialist garage in the mid-late 70's, all great cars for their time especially the sports car models :)
