    Good grief! A Chrysler 180. I had a lift in one 50 years ago and have never seen one since.
    Barn Find section was fun - front end of the Hustler reminded me of the Aston Martin Lagonda.
    Good to see another GTA video, it's been a while.
    Like the newly coined word: "barnfindy".

    I think the Wartberg at 21:54 is Owen's from the OG Cars channel - a lovely couple who rescued a load of east european cars last year, including a Skoda Favorit Forum estate ... if it is, it broke down on the way to Rustival as the plastic fan belt pulley split into two halves

    Those Chrysler 180’s were sold in Australia as a Chrysler centura. They had a different font and rear end treatment. They were available with Chrysler Australia’s infamous hemi 6 cylinders of varying capacities. The largest of which was a 265 hemi, and with triple side draft webers, e49 camshaft and a good exhaust system,,, they proved to be absolute rockets in a straight line. They just weren’t the best handling vehicles with that big hemi 6 under the bonnet. But again,, scary fast and unreal in a straight line and we’re in direct competition with the scary fast mark 3,4 and 5 cortinas that ford Australia assembled and fitted with 4.1 litre 6 cylinder engines. Mk 3’s had the log head 250 cubic inch engine and the mk4’s and 5’s had the cast iron headed 4.1 litre 250 crossflow which breathed much better than the log head 250’s.
    I had a 72 tc/mk3 cortina station wagon that I fitted up with a bog standard alloy head 250 crossflow out of one of our xd ford falcons, which looks identical to a pre facelift mk2 Grenada, and fitted a 5 speed manual gearbox,,,, and I tell ya,,, that little corty wagon was like driving an oversize go kart and flogged the crap out of most modern cars at the time!
    Sigh…….. memories ay!

    • @Zeem4
      @Zeem4 9 місяців тому

      The Centura's different front-end treatment was specifically for the inline 6-cylinder engine to fit in there, as the original design was intended for 4-cylinder engines and was too small. I think the early Rootes development had a V6 in mind, but that never saw the light of day due to the car ending up being a Rootes/Simca mashup.
      Your talk of big-engined Australian versions of cars that don't handle makes me think of the Marina Red Six. They sound simultaneously fun and terrifying.

  • @Zeem4

    I love that Chrysler 180 - I'm a huge Avenger fan, and I love the 180's "Avenger on steroids" look. I really like FD Victors too, I think they're one of the best-looking cars ever made. Yours is the only video of this show so far that I've seen that features these cars.
    The Fiesta van caught my attention too, as I've got a Mk1 Fiesta (in bits) in my garage. Mine's staying with a 957cc Valencia engine though.

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto  9 місяців тому +1

      Ooh, I do like a mk1 Fiesta! I think they're a really well-proportioned design (and I agree with you about the 180 and FD Victor, too). Good luck with putting the bits back together :)

    Sounds like you had a great show Martin, I must admit the first car I saw at the show was the Chrysler 180. I haven’t seen one of these few years, for some reason my grandad had an ex company car example, but I’ve never seen one again until this orange example. I also enjoyed seeing the Uno Turbo, totally unmolested, which must be a rarity….having missed out the max power generation.

    That Chrysler 180 was designed in Coventry and was meant to be the next Humber Snipe, with a 60 degree V6 that was already designed and running. Unfortunately Chrysler, the company renowned for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, decided to have it made in Poissy, France, at the Simca factory, with four cylinder Simca engines, and inside it was given brown nylon cloth and brown plastic wood instead of walnut veneer, leather upholstery and power windows which is what Ryton had planned for it. The rest, as they say, is history. And so was the 180.

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto  9 місяців тому +2

      Thanks, that's really interesting - I never knew that, although I was dimly aware Roy Axe had at least a hand in the design. My aunt had an Avenger in the mid 70s and rather fancied upgrading to a 180, but it was too big for the garage.

    • @Martin-oy2cw
      @Martin-oy2cw 9 місяців тому

      The Chrysler 160/180 2 litre was regarded on the continent as a shrunk american car from 5 years ago. Not ugly but also not very attractive. Worden veneer would not have changed this impession

    • @rx6180
      @rx6180 9 місяців тому

      While I’ve not got all the info in front of me right now, it’s my perception the 180 sold reasonably well in Spain (I may need to fact check) but certainly in the past 5-10 years one or two have turned up as background scenery in TV commercials filmed abroad, for sunny weather and no doubt lower costs, the one I can think off right now for Churchills car insurance with a presumably CGI Churchill bulldog skateboarding through the street. I think that was in Spain. Although I’d read about the intention that the 180 was meant to be a Humber somewhere before, my source material tonight was Humber Cars the Post War Years by Stephen Lewis, the PVHCC historian. I think in 1970 the body style of the 180 was a fair enough interpretation of modern U.S. style in the same way Rootes had followed U.S. trends since the war. As a Humber it may still have had a tough job against the Ford Granada but then so did everything else in the same class. I would liked to have seen a V6 Humber Snipe. It might still have appealed to some British customers where a four-pot ‘Chrysler’ didn’t mean a darn thing.

      My uncle drove 2 Chrysler 2 litres ' With the famous torque flite " automatic gear box and loved it to pieces. So also in the Netherlands there were afficionados. My father drove a Simca 1100 & 1308 which imho was far more exciting.
      And indeed the car sold well in Spain and was also sold as diesel it seems. Maybe also because the car market was quite limited with import restrictions❤

    • @rx6180
      @rx6180 9 місяців тому

      I’ve just done an online search to try to discover where the ‘Chill’ Churchill Insurance TV ad, featuring the skateboarding bulldog, was actually filmed. Calle de la Virgen de la Roca, 28027 Madrid, Spain. Dressed up to look like the U.K. but the film company needed guaranteed sunshine! And quite prominent for a couple of seconds is a turquoise Chrysler 180 parked up with a couple of people sunbathing on the bonnet! 😀ua-cam.com/video/JIbaA66UPLs/v-deo.htmlsi=fS2YOulCcuF8L_3j

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, that would be an interesting one. The Hustler somehow has the look of one of those 1970s experimental EVs - and I agree that William Towns did like a bit of interesting tech.

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto  9 місяців тому

      Yes, that's very much the way I look at these things too - it's not the engine that makes the DeLorean special (no offence to the PRV V6, which is a fine thing in some other cars).

    • @GrandThriftAuto
      @GrandThriftAuto  8 місяців тому

      I get that, and agree in a lot of cases. I don’t mind it on this Gordon GT though, which originally had a generic Chevy smallblock - effective and sonorous, yes, but not really the star of the show. ECC’s conversions are all reversible too.
