How cool would it be if you could expand on these excellent show videos into extended ones covering each of the clubs and the cars therein, getting an even closer look at the cars AND driving them! Lots of work for you but it'd be worthwhile I feel. Keep doing what you do, I'll keep watching for sure 🙌
That would be very cool! People do occasionally invite me to feature their cars, which is so generous - there should be a couple coming in the new year. It would be great to develop more of a ‘brand’ and so get more access, although that feels a long way off at the moment - but thanks for watching and supporting along the way 😊
@@GrandThriftAuto Yes, a great variety. I also enjoyed seeing cars that we think of as just totally normal everyday cars rightfully being recognised as classics - the Audi 80, BMW 5 series, the Honda Aerodeck etc... Doesn't half make you feel old though 😂
I always thought 7:53 the Multipla, was a curious looking car, but it’s really grown on me. Honda had a car with 3 front seats I remember. My dad bought my sister and I one of the first Fiat Panda’s for us to drive about in when we passed our test. I loved it. Simple, roomy, reliable and very cheap to insure for 17 year olds. I was doing some freelance design work for Conran design when they were working on the Range Rover interior (I was doing graphics for mothercare😢) I remember walking through one of the studios above Heals on Tottenham Court road and seeing the sketches on the wall for the seats and dashboard
It was a great show and quite a few brands I’d also heard nothing about previously, and a few you filmed that I’d sadly missed! However, I agree with you the Panther stand was one of the best. I knew you’d be checking out the Accord Aerodeck.. to be fair justifiably a classic given their rarity… must have been one of the last upper medium 3 door hatches made? I really liked the Pathfinder on the Riley stand…hard to believe it was 70 year old!
Thanks! I certainly do remember the R30, frequently in my dreams. There was a lovely one at last years' Festival of the Unexceptional. I very much would.
Love that Vauxhall Sports Hatch and the Honda Accord Aerodeck. And the Toyoata Crown! That silver MG Maestro is identical to the one my parents had. It was an early one bought used when it was 5 years old. The digital dashboard would go completely blank on hot summer days. I also managed to break off the passenger door handle as a weedy 11 or 12 year old. Funnily enough that happened outside a Unipart shop!
Excellent coverage again. Great to see nice, RHD versions of many of those old Italian and French clsssics. I think its fair to say the Scimitar, Beta HPE and Aerodeck are variations on the same thing.
Agreed, and I fully admit to a great weakness for 3-door estates. Happily there were lots of them - Borgward Isabella Combi, Vauxhall Sportshatch, Volvo 1800ES and the Peugeot 504 Riviera for example, as well as the ones you mentioned. Heaven!
Saw the Vauxhall Sportshatch thumbnail - never clicked on a video so fast! I’ve seen that gorgeous dark blue FIAT 124 - the Italian car specialist I used to use to service my Alfa had it in for some work - a lovely little car.
@@GrandThriftAutothat Sportshatch is stunning - dark wine paint with red stripes, and all of the tartan inside - delicious! Didn’t the great Wayne Cherry have one as a daily driver when he was head of design for Vauxhall?
@@simonhodgetts6530 I _think_ he had a one-off estate in silver like the Firenza HP Coupé, which was the inspiration for the Sportshatch. This is from memory though so might be wrong.
The Ami Super looked fabulous. A late model (very late) with wind-down front windows. These things were never going to change the world.... Probably the most significant consequence of their production was in adding invisible extra pep to Dyanes in later years. Lovely cars....
I hadn't noticed the wind-down windows, you're right - in fact I never knew that was a thing. I mainly remember having Amis and Saab V4s in a similar category in my head, for their distinctive sounds and for denoting someone who voted Liberal. (Which would've been me last time.)
Really enjoying your coverage of the show, think the alphabet system works well. Never really thought the Multipla was that ugly, and compared to today's BMW's and some of Rolls Royce's latest efforts, I think it's a looker.
Thanks! I agree about the Multipla, I was more commenting on the prevailing view than expressing my own - they're a bit quirky but as you say, there have been plenty of much more wilfully ill-styled monsters since.
I don't understand why people are simple minded and only box and label designs as just "ugly or beautiful", "black or white". The Multipla is not beautiful. It's not ugly. It's cool. It's hip. It's imaginative and wild and fun...etc. Design is an endless grayscale so to speak, different ways to appreciate it. Now what BMW is doing though is criminal because it's an assault to the vista lol.
The Renault van - you missed the joke! Cafe Rene was the focal point of the tv series Ello Ello! - - I didn't see any Marcus cars mentioned, or are they too young? And that factory that made a few expensive cars, based in Blackpool, I'm blowed if I can recall the name of them.
26:20 that's the 1st chassis production. The show didn't look that busy. Last time I was at the NEC I was bumping into people's breaths. Needs a revamp the show.
Ah thanks, I did wonder about that Triumph - the number plate looked vaguely familiar. I did most of my filming early on - the show got quite a lot busier later, though it wasn't unpleasantly packed. I'm not big on huge crowds these days.
@@edgarbeat2851 Thanks! Interesting about the lighting - I found it ok for me at the NEC but I know what you mean and respond badly to some striplights and very high contrast lighting, so I can sympathise.
@GrandThriftAuto I knew certain cars were going to be there. Lp 400 is one I'd would have loved to have seen but the rope around it combined with lighting arrrgh. One day, I hope at Hampton Court or an outdoor show I will see an Lp 400. Too many reflections etc. Allot of stuff I photograph to use in potential art pieces i prefer natural light for shadows. Absolute last resort, I'll take indoors if I have little chance of seeing in the wild. I'm a fussy bugger.
@@GrandThriftAuto Thing is, the lighting is an upgrade on what it was in the tens/teens. It's not ideal but the earlier halogens set off my SAD something chronic; where white balance went to die.
Tough choice that, they both have their pros and cons. Don't know if you've seen it but I did a video a while ago comparing them back to back - that was a fun day. Here's a link to it: ua-cam.com/video/RGx17mUIL4M/v-deo.html

Was the cafe mentioned on the side of the Citroen H van a reference to Allo Allo?
I was thinking the same !
Vauxhall Sportshatch......owned one in the 70s .......stupidly sold it ! . RFS 400P if its still out there
Sadly it appears to have vanished in the mid 1990s from the DVLA records :( You never know though, it might still be lurking in a barn somewhere...
