Removing Solar Panels before a Replacement Roof
My roof was only 15 years old when I got my solar panels and now it is 30 years old and really needs to be replaced. The roofer didn't want to touch them and a solar company wanted $4,000 to do the job and would not commit to a schedule because they were so busy. The hardest part was removing the MC4 connectors. I tried many different tools, but this one worked the best:
amzn.to/3XyHByc
I tried 2 other tools that were also specifically designed for MC4 connectors and they didn't work at all. I tried many tools that were not designed for the job, but the one that worked the best and every time was the mini saw:
My mini hack saw is very old and not longer in production, but this one is very close:
amzn.to/3Tiyore
I also tried these automotive tools
amzn.to/3XysJjn
All the connector problems could have been avoided if you use this grease during install:
amzn.to/3MEHQBL
You could also just cut the wires and install new connectors which I thought about. I didn't do it because I assumed 36 connectors with 18 panels, but there are only 19. Here is the tool to install new connectors:

Retrofitting Old Fluorescent Tube Light Fixtures with Modern and Efficient LEDs

    • @DYI
      @DYI 25 днів тому

      I wish I could tell you with certainty, but I only know it worked on my Toyota and what others have posted in the comments section. I can tell you that not only are the air wedges not too expensive, but I have found other uses. I installed a very heavy solid core door by myself using them. If you have another option, you might want to try it first as this method does potentially break the latch. You should purchase a new latch before trying. You can always return it if you don't need it. Good luck!

      Very true! I spent considerable time searching on the internet and trying everything I could think of and I was reduced to my method of force. One guy was half joking in the comments about using a torch, but I guess you could also use a Jaws of Life and rip the door off. Seriously, I don't think there is another option that doesn't cause major damage.

  • @carlosguerrero358
    @carlosguerrero358 Місяць тому

    Once you had it cracked open were you able to use something like a screwdriver to pop the latch open? Or did the wedges open it completely?

    • @DYI
      @DYI Місяць тому

      The wedges completely did the job on this car. They broke a weak part in the latch mechanism. The problem is that this method only works for cars that are designed with weak latches. It worked great on this Matrix/Corolla, but you can see from the comments that it failed on a Camry. Of course, a well built car shouldn't fail in the first place so if your latch fails, this method should work. How is that for logic?

When u put led bulsb for both front and rear. If it has a dual function. They will work and get hyperflash. Other times they won’t turn on because the wattage is very low. And u won’t be able to hyperflash at all. So it depends on ur vehicle.

    What do you think about adding magnets to the outside of an oil filter?

    • @DYI
      @DYI 3 місяці тому

      There are quite a few UA-cam videos dedicated to that very topic. On several of them they open up the filter and prove that some metal particles do indeed get trapped against the metal wall of the filter. Unfortunately, that trick will not work on this cartridge type filter and is yet another reason that I much prefer a conventional filter. The only good thing about the cartridge filter is they do cost slightly less if you compare an original Toyota element with a Toyota Spin on. Of course, you could get a cheap Fram Spin on for less than a Toyota element, but that is hardly a fair comparison. I only use Frame Ultra or WIX on my other cars, which usually cost $8-$10 and the Toyota Elements are only $6 in bulk. I have the link in the description. You could use after market element filters, but they are very close to the Toyota price and not worth it.

      No consumption issues. I believe that the 2AZ-FE engine is in the 2009-2010 Corolla XRS and this is a 2013 Corolla LE with a 2ZR-FE. Good advice about jackstands. You might add to look in your owner's manual for jacking points; the hoist and the jackstands are probably not located where the temporary tire-changing jack would go. Or provide guidance on how to intelligently select a strong member to jack up. That's a cool flexible tool for the drain plug! Another tip about oil filters: If they are mounted with the open end up (not like this one), you can pre-fill them with oil before mounting them. This will lessen the delay to get oil fully charged into the oil system when you start up again. That is an interesting method of measuring the correct amount of oil to refill; but you would have to do more arithmetic if you use the pre-fill technique with the oil filter!😬 You say your oil change interval is 5,000 miles. Is that what your manufacturer recommends? If not, maybe you should say why. You call the filter both a "cartridge" and "element". This type of replacement part is correctly called an "element". I am not familiar with this type of cartridge. You may want to note that this type of cartridge requires more torque to seat it properly because of the O-ring seal. You DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT TO use a wrench to tighten a spin-on oil filter. For those, you want it hand-tight, or maybe less than 1/4 turn past hand tight.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for all the feedback. Yes, I put the jack and stands on the frame. OK, not exactly a frame since this is a uni-body, but there are stamped beams that pretty much serve as a frame. I have a link to the drain plug tool in the description. It was only $9 and well worth it. There are not many cars that have a vertical filter that your trick will work with. I change the oil on 4 Toyotas in my family. This is the only one that has the "element" and the rest use spin on. However, they are all horizontal so it would be a mess to attempt to pre-fill. Scotty has a great rant about the "elements" and he refers to them as cartridges to I intentionally used both terms ua-cam.com/video/NaV1wvTpHCs/v-deo.html

    Hi Commander Dave! You said the replacement LED tubes are the same form factor as the original fluorescents. But I don't see you installing those new LEDs into the fixtures. The plastic-looking panel that you install doesn't look like a light. I'm so confused. It would be nice to see you wire up the new tubes or the end connectors.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment. I can see the confusion I caused with my edits. I heavily edited this video to get it down to under 3 minutes. The entire conversion took about 10 minutes, but I edited it to avoid boring anyone. I showed removing the old tubes but not inserting the new tubes because it is the identical operation, but in reverse. Just insert the tubes and twist a quarter turn. The only difference is that there is a up and down to the LED tubes as the LEDs are along the top side of the tube and point down. If you mount them upside down most of the light will go up into the fixture and not into the room where you want it. I also only showed placing the metal cover over the wires and not me removing it. It was removed by squeezing the cover and pulling away from the 6 tabs. Again, removing it was the reverse of putting it back. I literally converted a hundred fixtures so I got pretty fast at it. Your first one could take you more time and could have significant differences. What is important is to wire all the "hot" wires to one side and all the "neutral" wires to the other side. This is a huge simplification to wiring up fluorescents.

I guess it is good in some ways as your car is not so easy to break into. You might want to try going back and forth increasing the pressure on one at a time so you can use both of your hands on each one and get as much pressure on each as you can. Just be careful not to bend the body panel. You should be generate a tremendous amount of force with 2 hands. I guess you could drive over one with your back tire and see if you can squeeze hard enough to lift your car. Each wedge should be able to apply 550 pounds of force according to the manufacturer. That is about the weight under each of the Ford Focus rear tires. You could also try a slim jim or call AAA. Don't give up. @@christophercortez341I am not positive they will do it for free, but can tell you they are experts in breaking into locked cars from the outside. They do it all the time for people who lock their keys in their car. Just explain that you can't open your door and ask. You could also go to an auto body shop. They will both use a tool like this. It will, of course, not work on all cars either. www.amazon.com/Toughty-VR_124-Professional-Auto-Tool/dp/B0BVHH5QHL/ref

      Even if what I had to cut was solid stainless steel it would have been possible, but very difficult. The fact that what I had to cut was only a light weight aluminum alloy and copper tubes made it trivial to do with a corded multitool driving a quality carbide blade.

    Why, on earth, did you purchase another Kohler after all the frustration?

    • @DYI
      @DYI 6 місяців тому

      Great question. I did it because now that I figured a good way to remove the Kohler it will not be nearly so difficult the next time. Also, it is a a good value and good facet compared to alternatives. I complained about this facet costing $200, but there is really no upper bound. For instance a Moen Sinema facet at Home Depot is now nearly $800. There are other high end name brands that are north of $1,000.

    Hi awesome work man. What size lumber did you use for the center rail? I really want to make one of these because my son is in cub scouts and I’d like to be able to test run the couple different designs we’ve done over the last two years.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 6 місяців тому

      Same question I got exactly one year ago. Just scroll down. Yes, very good idea to build a test track, but you really need to make it very close to the one that they will be using as the track design can make a big difference. It really matters if the track has a sharp drop and goes flat or is a constant slope. In the first case it really matters to have the weight in the back of the car because it gives you more potential energy. Cub Scout Derbys are fun, but it really gets fun when you get to help your boys with Eagle projects. Enjoy you time with our son!

      Yep. Tell me about it. Very frustrating. I worked on it for months. Even purchased a endoscope to look inside the door. I was not under time pressure because the door didn't work for years and is a car owned by my new daughter in law who rarely used the back seat. It has been working great now for a year after my fix. Now she is having a baby so she will really need the door to work! I was concerned because I only replaced the mechanism with a cheap aftermarket one and not a Toyota. However, the cheap aftermarket one seems to be better than the original Toyota part.

    Note that I'm inexperienced in this field, but I'll take a gander. Hopefully it helps you to come up with the right idea. Start by using a borescope to investigate the reason why you can't pull it out. Afterwards either dissolve the wood with chemicals or cut it using a drain auger with a tree cutting attachment. This could allow you to pull it out.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 7 місяців тому

      Thanks. We did have a professional plumber scope it from the other side which is why we knew we needed to do some digging. The pipe is very old and made of some type of tar. The plumber thought that his drain auger would destroy the pipe. If anyone knows of a chemical that would dissolve wood and not hurt a tar pipe, I am willing to try.

    Does it break the mechanism? I’m selling my car which has this issue (i think it’s the cables inside the panel) and i spent so much on it i just want it gone. I’m wondering if this willow me to open it or if it will break the lock and i’ll have to replace it after.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 8 місяців тому

      Yes. It does break the mechanism, but it was not working in the first place which is why I needed to break it open in the first place. I got the replacement mechanism fairly inexpensively. I was not a Toyota, but and after market one from Amazon. I guess it could have been a cable problem, but in my case it was not. I tried many things including a scope camera and cutting out a piece of the plastic door panel to get access. For me there was no other way. One commenter was able to remove the panel on his Nissan by removing the back seat. This wouldn't work on my Toyota as the door panel clips are covered by the door frame.

      @DYI 8 місяців тому

      All the bicycle are plenty strong enough to carry groceries. If I go on a major shopping trip such as Costco, I use a Burley trailer and carry up to 100 pounds in it. I once made a ride to HomeDepot to get two sacks of concrete! I used to carry 2 of my boys in it when they were young so my Burley trailer is now nearly 30 years old and on its third set of tires. I highly recommend a trailer for heavy loads or taking a child. Much better and safer than having them up high.

      Thanks. The real trick is to find aftermarket LED lights that have the same form factor and work with your car. I didn't post a video of my turn signal replacement I did more recently. The LED bulb fit but because it is more efficient and draws so much less current it causes the turn signal to blink much faster than the stock bulb. @@DYI u get 4 options. In order to fix the hyperflash for when it comes to led turn signal bulbs. Either 1: get a sylvania - load equalizer resistors with T-tabs. 2: get a load equalizer resistor with connectors that comes with whatever the socket bulb size u have, and it’s a plug and play version kit. 3: u can get the led fladher relay. I recommend Novita - LM449. Which is the part number for any Toyota model. 4: if u don’t want to do all that, u can get the ultra bright led bulbs with a built in resistors, that’s plug and play and that’s all u have to do.

    • @DYI
      @DYI 8 місяців тому

      Yes, that would definitely work to add a resistor in parallel to draw the same current as a standard bulb. However, one of the reasons to go with the LED in addition to turning on faster and providing more time for a tailgater to stop is to have a lower power draw and adding a resistor would waste energy. Adding the resistor could defeat the energy advantage. However, the faster flashing rate may also burn more power so maybe it doesn't matter! I think the faster flashing rate draws more attention and is safer. Our van is now up to 220k miles so I will just live with it, but thanks for the suggestions as it might help others. @@toyotabrony

    Curious to know- how has it held up against rats? And termites?

    • @DYI
      @DYI 10 місяців тому

      Still looking like new after 3 years. Rats are not an issue as they are not a match for the chicken wire. I guess if they were smart enough to climb the chicken wire they could eat their way through the plastic bird netting, but that has not been a problem. If it was a problem you could over the top with chicken wire, but it would literally make harvesting a pain. I did start to get some rot in the corners after 3 years on the boxes I did with painted standard lumber instead of pressure treated lumber. Pressure treated lumber costs nearly 2x more, but it is probably worth it. Yes, some people have concerns about chemicals getting into food, but if you put on several coats of paint it is pretty well sealed. Additionally, the copper they now use is pretty safe compared to the chemicals they used to use.
