Testing the New Sony A1ii for Wildlife Photography - Safari Vlog
Sony sent me the new A1ii to test out in the field for a couple of days, and in this vlog I'm bringing you along as I put it to the test at Kings Camp (www.kingscamp.com/) in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, Greater Kruger. We have some incredible sightings including mating leopards, several prides of lions, wilddogs chasing zebras and cheetah.

Very interesting to see the thought process behind a professional photographer! It feels like a lot to take in at the moment (I mostly freeze in stressy situations with wildlife and forget to even check my settings), do you have any tips to start feeling more comfortable and being able to think clearly in these scenarios? Also have just started listening to your and Craig’s podcast, and I’m hooked! Absolutely love it!!
You are getting great videos with professional editing, images and narrations. May I suggest to reduce the noise of the shutter since it distracts from the quality of the whole production.
@@JoseHernandez-ir2sm thanks very much glad to hear! Unfortunately can’t do that since it would affect the quality of my photos (which are always my priority) with rolling shutter issues of my electronic shutter. I’m also with my guests who I can’t ask to turn shutter sounds off just for my video. I also personally feel it gives a more realistic idea of what it’s like to be on safari, which is the whole idea behind my videos 😊
Fabulous review. Glad I found your channel.

Way too much useless filler. Stuck vehicles, hotel rooms, who cares? I came here for camera information. Get to that!
@@Blukenator okey sorry, this is a vlog and this is the type of content I like to post. If you don’t like it you should probably watch someone else’s videos 👍
What lens combination would you choose for Maasai Mara & India (Tigers) - 1) Sony 300mm f2.8 + 100-400mm + 2x TC (for the prime) or, 2)Sony 300mm f2.8 + 70-200 f2.8 + 2x Tc (for use with both lenses) or, 3)Sony 300mm f2.8 + Sony 200-600mm

Absolutely love how this video brings the safari experience to life! The leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas are captured so naturally-it’s a treat to watch. Wow, this safari video is incredible! Leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas are such fascinating animals to capture on camera. How do you guys sit in that jeep with no protection?
Yes, the vehicle is our protection. The animals don't associate it with food or threat, and therefor don't mind us being there, so as long as we stay in the car we are perfectly safe.
We spent days on the Chobe with Pangolin in 2023. An amazing place and great folks.

People just like to complain got my a1ii yesterday and the AI and pre-cap alone are a solid reason to upgrade. The body, lcd, ibis too and then my guess about 50 smaller updates. Did i have to pay yes, did it sting a little yes but after 4 years using the a1 i am looking forward to 4 years with the a1ii.
@@scb2scb2 couldn’t agree more!!
I picked up the A1 for $2800 les than the A1 II so it depends on the price. Let people voice their opinions because that's what Sony needs to hear. It blows my mine when people are afraid of what other people have to say. Sony can also improve its color science system and make improvements so that shooters and photographers get solid accurate colors without having to tweak Sony's in camera settings. Nothing major but that's why Canon color is appreciated more. Sony's cine line has to have accurate colors at every base. Color shouldn't have more brown / pink shadow base or blue in the shadows. Look at the video and photos in the OP great video? Pink brown under tones in gamma. Color accurate but also color balanced.
@ yes absolutely, people are always allowed to voice their opinions, and there is always things all camera brands can improve. At the end of the day, the camera you choose comes down to your personal preferences, needs and priorities. The A1 will definitely be cheaper now and you can get it for a great price which brings amazing value for money, since it’s a fantastic camera. However, personally for me, the ergonomics and autofocus of the A1 was dealbreakers for me, which is why I choose the A7Rv instead. Because it suited my needs better. But as I said in the video, those things have now been fixed with the A1ii which is why I think it’s now the perfect camera. But for other people there’s other things to prioritize and that’s why they might choose another camera, and that’s perfectly fine, I’m simply stating my opinion in my video 😊
@@karolinanoreewild Indeed its not that i mind the complaining i do that a lot and directly to sony at times or other brands. But we all know that many comments are more like a sport of some people and have little relation with what they use themselves or how others use the product your example is a good one the egro's where so important you switched models 2 times. I personally just designed or help design things to fix it just designed a new extender and have worked on several products in the past helping companies.

No internal raw in 2024 for $6500, no thanks 😢
… yes, yes, it’s so disapointing. 😂😂😂 eh, no …
NO internal raw codecs in 2024 is so disappointing and to charge $6.5K for it, is an absolute crime.
She is using the camera as in a perfect setting showing why its in sony's lineup and all you are sending as a signal that its not for you as a video shooter given its not a crime its just someone who demands his usecase is all our use cases.
@@scb2scb2… yes, stupid post.
Look, that is not going to be important until Sony includes it and then its 1000% all about that. That's the Sony user mentality.
@@KungPowEnterFist …in 2028, internal is game changer for Sony(A1iii). LOL.
@@vivalasvegas702 When Sony includes a 1.4xTC in their next 400 f2.8 and 600 f4, it will totally be about that and how everyone else needs to catch up.
Since you are using a prime do you crop a lot?
No not much at all actually. I will if I have to but, none of the photos in this video are cropped much at all. I simply just frame it in different ways depending on how far away the animal is, and just work with the focal length that I got 👍
@@karolinanoreewild Thank you. These are some of the best pictures of wild life I have seen.
It really excites me that you seem to really enjoy the A1ii with the 300+1.4tc. Because I invested in the 300+1.4tc and I have the A1 which I’m really pumped to take on safari! Do you feel when you have the 300 that you need to be wider often? Or does the 300 pretty handle most situations?
Yes it’s such a great combo I’m very happy with it! I feel that 300mm is a great focal length for wildlife. Very rarely do I feel the need for something wider, but in the future I’ll be investing in a 70-200 for those situations 😊
Great video and wonderful pictures.
Fantastic video Karolina, some lovely sightings and what a hide that is...better than some motel rooms !!! Safe travels !!! 🤠😎
Thanks very much! Hahah yes absolutely agree!
As good as cameras are these days, no one touches Sony’s AF for sharpness when the distances get farther off & in low light. Great to see them giving their customers what they ask for with the ergonomics, Focus Stacking (I would use that). So how many fps shooting full raw & buffer with the A7R5?
Absolutely agree!! I think with uncompressed raw a you can get up to 7fps or so. I usually shoot compressed L and get 10 fps with that 👍
@ Thank you
Fantastic, can't wait for the A1 II as well and take it on your tour in July.
That’s awesome! I’ll definitely be a bit jealous of you then 😅

hi karolina really like your videos. i have a question. how many kg is your bag and gears? and how do you lug it to everywhere? thank yoou
hi karoline good to see u here
For vlogging, go and get a DJI Pocket 3, they are really rather good for this type of use, been loving mine!
I have the 200-600, it’s an amazing lens, and a ‘no brainer’ for anyone on the Sony system requiring a long lens for the money. When I bought mine (in a double sale), I was not that excited by it. In my head, I desired the 400/2.8 as being the ‘optimal’ long lens, the longest 2.8 you can get, and if you needed longer, put a converter on it. I just could not bring myself to spending that kind of money on a lens (the 300/2.8 was not out or rumoured). My 200-600 sat unopened for several weeks, it was a ‘head’ purchase, not a ‘heart’ purchase. Then I started using it. Very quickly, the more I used it, the more I started to appreciate it, to the point where, for me, I think it is probably a better lens for my usage than the 400/2.8 would have been. Crazy thought I know. Two things make me feel this, one is the weight. If I had both lenses, I know that I’d pick the 200-600 a lot purely on weight grounds. Secondly, Locating your subject at 200, then quickly zooming in to 600mm is a lot easier for the less experienced long lens shooter. So, while theoretically, the 400/2.8 looks like the optimal option to me, the pragmatic side appreciates the 200-600. Now the 300/2.8 is available, I’ve been struggling with that dilemma. It has a weight & size advantage to the 200-600, with converters covers a similar range (300, 420, 600) all at faster f-stops. It’s very, very tempting. However, on the flip side, at 600mm the 300+2x is only a third of a stop faster. Even at 300mm where the prime has a 2 stop advantage (the 200-600 switches from f5.6 to f6.3 around 300mm), as you observed, with hi iso plus post noise reduction as good as both are now, it somewhat mitigates the need for a faster lens, so it then comes down to bokeh & subject isolation as the key advantage. I’ve seen shots from both and the 300/2.8 is superior for sure, but the ‘cost’ is then having to faff about juggling converters when you need more reach, potentially missing shots, potentially letting dust & dirt get onto your sensor vs the convenience of the 200-600. The 200-600 seemed to hold up pretty well in the sharpness too, maybe not quite up to the 300, but not that far behind either. I’ve also seen others who have done a back to back comment that they didn’t feel there was a huge AF performance difference either. Would like to hear more of your thoughts specifically on the 200-600 vs 300/2.8 plusconverters…..do you think you will change? The heart is still pulling me toward the 300/2.8 though, but it’s not a totally clear cut thing for me. I switched from Canon to Sony at the end of 2017, getting the A7R3, after 3 decades on the Eos system. I picked up an A7S3 for low light use a few years back (I used to do a lot of astro imaging, with telescopes & motorised/computer controlled EQ mounts), then this year, added an A93 primarily due to the pre capture, but also the various handling improvements. If the A7R6 gets pre capture, I may well be tempted with it….if I’ve not picked up an A1 ii by then!
@@TheLDunn1 hi! Thanks very much for the comment and the input! With regards to your question about the 200-600 vs the 300mm, is does very much come down to personal preference, budget and usage. I have just purchased the 300mm 2.8 and super happy with the purchase. I was recently using it on a project with the 200-600mm side by side, and the sharpness difference was very noticeable. For me personally the 300mm is a very easy choice over the 200-600mm, due to the low light intake and background separation. The lightweight and small size is also a massive game changer. But I’ve also always personally preferred the quality with a prime over the versatility of a zoom. Again, a lot of it comes down to what works for you personally, and weighing pros and cons against eachother for each persons individual needs. Hope that helps!
@ this was one of the comparison vids I recently watched. ua-cam.com/video/KxNvZnplMaU/v-deo.htmlsi=dhzGgn0sHWYqX70q It would seem that your finding and the ones in the above video are not well aligned, that is not saying that either one of you is ‘wrong’, I’m in no position to judge either of you, just observing that there is a difference. Interesting regardless. I must say, you showed some amazing shots in your video here, brilliant! And thank you for sharing those, and your experiences with the Sony equipment. I still have a dilemma on what to do myself 😀
@ yes this video compares them at 600mm with the teleconveter, which is very different to using the 300mm natively. Which is what I’m mostly using the lens at. Again, for me personally and my needs, the 300mm 2.8 is an obvious choice. But for other people the 200-600mm might be a better choice 👍
The owl shot, 135mm @f3.5 - I dare say the 70-200 2.8 @3.5 would have got you an almost identical shot…..& you’d have had the flexibility to crop in/out as required. I can only see the 135 being an advantage when you are shooting wider than 2.8….but then you run into the too shallow DoF as you also observed. Personally, I’d favour the versatility / flexibility of the 70-200 2.8.
For me Masai Mara 400mm f2,8 is the sweet spot 🤌🏾
Nature is a beautiful art of God’s creation! Thank you for sharing with us who might not be able to travel and experience the exotic wilderness ❤ ❤️❤️
