episode 14 Knotty Giraffe Knits
Welcome back to my knitting chats.. It’s been a few months since I recorded last. This episode features my Stephen West Color Popportunity socks as one of two finished objects and the Helga sweater I’m currently knitting. I’m hoping for some help as I try to navigate the uncharted territory of changing a pattern from knitting flat to knitting in the round. Thanks for any tips you can offer!
Over half of this episode is reading as it's been more than two months and I read a lot. Feel free to sign off after the knitting if you're not a reader. Good to see you back! Shame that the Helga is giving you so much grief. I recently did a sweater that used a set in sleeve: pick up one row of stitches around sleeve opening and the (starting up at shoulder) use short rows to work the sleeve cap…..might work well for the Helga. Since you sound like you’re over it…doing a few rows of ribbing and call it a vest might be the best solution! Life is too short!!

      Thanks Beverly! I've just discovered another mistake in it, that I missed decreasing on the outside so I'm ready to frog the entire thing...or maybe just try and finish it the way you've suggested, picking up stitches and doing short rows for the sleeve cap. Honestly, I am starting to think this wool is cursed as I used it first to knit a Felix cardigan but it never looked good so I frogged it in hopes of making the Helga with it. Sadly, I am obsessive about finishing things so I will probably just power on through it. Thank. you so much for taking the time to offer help, I truly appreciate it!

      @@knottygiraffe I also tend to power through and just finish projects….even if I hate them by the end! Maybe if you finish it and put it away for a few months you’ll be able to see what a beautiful sweater you’ve created rather than the grief it has caused you, Good luck!!

    Looks like you have been really busy! I do not have any experience/advice to offer re: Helga, but I will be watching to see how you figure this one out! Love the color. Love your socks. I got "the bug" from watching you and now I've knit eight pairs since June! Very fun---lots to learn but in a compressed format! I'm totally hooked on them. Loved the book roundup, added a few titles to my wish list at the library. Have a wonderful autumn season and happy knitting. I don't see where you mention what yarn you used for your Humulus, but I recall it was Drops? I bought some of that yarn because you mentioned it and am nearly finished making the Cloud Sweater by PetiteKnits and it's turning out so nice. It's so lightweight.

      HI Anne! I am not surprised that you're hooked on knitting socks--sorry for that, ha ha ha :) They are addicting, and once you start wearing handmade socks, it's hard to go back to store bought. I knit my second Humulus in the Drop Sky but my first one, the one I was wearing in this video, was actually knit with a different yarn. It's a tweed and very rustic feeling. I didn't save a label from it, it was before I'd started documenting my knitting on Ravelry, so I don't know what it was. It's nice and warm, though, just a bit too scratchy to wear without something underneath. The Cloud sweater in the Drops sounds lovely! I've never done a Petite Knit pattern before. One of these days... Anyhow, thanks so much for your comments and I hope you have a great autumn season as well.

      What an honour to see a comment here from you as I am an avid Knitty Stew fan! I just finished watching your podcast from PEI. I was there back in 2019 and loved it so much, thought about moving there! Skinny dipping at Greenwich beach (twice!) was a highlight. You should put in for a flight to Deer Lake NL next summer and see if you can get a layover so you can explore Gros Morne. It is unbelievable and you'd love Molly Made yarn store in Woody Point. I was just back there again in August for the Woody Point writers festival. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to comment, it means a lot <3.

    Just found you. Am a knitter who loves to read. Sadie Smith is a very talented writer. Her writing is lots of things to different people. I read The Fraud a few months ago and found it a interesting challenge but did finish the book and was glad I did. The short chapters did not affect me like you but I understand that this aspect of her style isn't for everyone. Hope you will pick the book up again sometime in the future. You always have so much going on! Nice to hear a little about your recent trip to Newfoundland and loved the photos you shared. Your pink ranunculus looks so nice on you, really pretty, really summery. So scary about the car accident. Gosh, you never know, right? So glad you are OK (and the dogs.). I've gone down the Summer Lee "The Sock Project" rabbit hole for a while, getting excited about playing with color and design on various sock projects for myself and my family. Also learning how to modify various parts of a sock to get a really good fit. For now, that's what I'm working on and other projects are "waiting" for me. haha. Gosh, I share your horror of the Starry Night-mare sock yarn. It does not evoke any aspect of the masterpiece of the same name. An abomination! haha. But you made nice socks and they will keep your feet warm next winter. Love how you hid the remaining traces in your Jelly Roll blanket. 😁

      Thanks for your positive feedback. Definitely try the forestland sweater! AS for y fingerless gloves, I originally goofed when I wrote up the pattern by taking the stats off of a pair I made with a sport weight yarn. They stitch count for cast on is the same but sometimes I'll add an extra couple of rows before starting the thumb increase and a row or two before or after the short rows on the hand. I'm not a professional designer, just wrote it up how I make them so I suggest just trying them on as you go. I LOVE the island! Spent a month there last summer trying to dodge the smoke here in the Okanagan. Lucky you! And yes, check out your local fibre arts guild. Cheers!

      Hi Anne, you'll LOVE knitting The Shift. It's one of those addicting patters that makes you want to keep knitting it. Your Forestland sweater is gorgeous and I can tell how excited you are about it. I still am so happy with my Humulus, wearing it almost every day in the mornings. I also finished my Ranunculus and want to make another one! I've just cast on a Versal sweater by Ailbiano McLochlainn to experience a Susie Myers-type, top-down, contiguous construction with beautiful saddle shoulder shaping--all seamless. So far, it's just beautiful. But now you inspired me to look at Jennifer Steingass' designs and I am very drawn to several of them. And right now, they are 50% off on Ravelry, so there's that! Congratulations on your writing achievement, very happy for you. Enjoyed your episode. Love The Shift that you made, beautiful colors. Thanks for posting the Etsy link for the wooden tags. I read The Thirteenth Tale many years ago now, when it first came out. I loved it, also. My Humulus is coming along--would be nearly finished by now if I didn't have other projects that I'm working on, but that's how I roll. haha Ordered more of the Papyrus yarn for a spring/summer Ranunculus, short sleeved tee-style and waiting for it to arrive. The quantity of balls I ordered before didn't seem like enough once I settled on my gauge to create the fabric I'm wanting (not see-through.).I'm very happy with the yarn. It's a dream to work with and I love the fabric of my swatch (very smooth, cool-feeling and drapey.). Happy Knitting.

      Thanks Anne! The Shift was a lot of fun to make. I'm pretty sure the link I posted to Etsy is the one I purchased it from. For some reason, it didn't show up in my history. I, too, am thinking of making another Ranunculus. Someone gave me a lot of yarn (see episode two with the moths!!!!) and I have saved some I thought would be perfect for a long sleeved winter one. Just need to finish the Soldotna first. I remember thinking the sleeves would go on forever with my Humulus and I even made them too short, I think, just wanting to finish it! Happy knitting and thanks for your kind words.

    Great to see your year of knitting! Love the variety and I agree that your Trinigan is gorgeous. I'm coming along with my Humulus, working on the body now. I also love my Wintergreen Headband and I agree: quick to make, warm to wear! I don't know how I missed that you made a Ranunculus. However, I have seen it so many other places and I all of a sudden realized that I might like a summery top, so I ordered some cotton/silk yarn from Hobbi to try my hand at making one and the delivery is expected today! I will re-watch your prior episode to get all of your tips and tricks! Happy knitting in 2024.

      Thanks Anne. The biggest tip I can give you on the Ranunculus is to print out the pattern. I made the mistake of trying to read it off my tablet and somehow missed a section of instructions that threw me straight into the German short rows after casting on the collar. I tried both of the cast-ons they suggested and honestly can't remember which one I used in the end as I cast it on three times before getting it right. Also, it's a good idea to use stitch markers for each section of the pattern repeats in the lace section. It's a really fun pattern full of tricks and turns and I hope to make another one soon. I remember finding the sleeves taking forever on. my Humulus as I just wanted it done. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers and happy knitting to you too :)

      You're welcome! It's a great pattern that people should know about. Sorry I don't have more subscribers or views but I'm not that good at this or promoting my channel, it's more just a fun thing I do once a month for myself more than anything, and maybe in hopes of inspiring a few people here and there. Cheers and I look forward to knitting more of your patterns in the future, especially the Canadian hat I've seen on your Ravelry page!

    I'm so glad you decided to keep the hat for yourself and are knitting a shift for yourself too! Sometimes we create and gift with the joy of giving handmade love to others and forget ourselves. Often I've loved a particular gift project so much, I've thought I will make one for myself after the holiday passes, but never get to it as I pick up WIP's to move along with. It's nice to see your joy as you talk about the fun of spinning again, can't wait to see your progress and first project. Enjoy the process!

    Happy New Year! Loved seeing your knitted gifts. Thanks for the tip re: yarn pom pom vs. faux fur, related to comparative weight. Love your knitted-square blanket and decorated tree (I even see a trailer/camper ornament on there!). I've started my Humulus sweater and it's going well. Love your solution to the yarn dye lot issue on the Silver Stag sweater. Happy Knitting and stay warm. Love the piano piece you use in your intro? What is it called or what is it from?

    • @knottygiraffe
      @knottygiraffe 9 місяців тому

      Hi Anne! Happy New Year to you too!!! Yes, there is a little camper ornament on my tree that was a Christmas gift from my step-daughter last year, as I have a little ancient Boler camper. Congratulations on starting the Humulus. It's a pretty straight forward pattern as I recall, and it's where I learned to do short rows and actually started using UA-cam as a resource for figuring out any new-to-me techniques. The piano piece at the beginning is just something I kind of made up, a tune I like to improvise on when I first sit down to the piano as a way to warm up my fingers and get reacquainted with the keys. Happy Knitting to you too and sadly, no effort needed to stay warm here in the Okanagan at the moment as we are still up above zero celsius with no snow. While it's lovely to still be able to get that extra hour a day of knitting in while I hike with the dogs, I'd rather be snowshoeing or skiing in winter. Wishing you all the best in 2024 and good luck with the Humulus!

    Enjoying your videos and wanted to comment that your Trinigan is just gorgeous. Your earlier recommendation for the Humulus has inspired me to start one with some yarn I have on hand. I also enjoy your book recommendations and "slice of life" segments with the fires and moths! I like your pattern recommendations and I'm halfway through a Wintergreen headband and I have the vanilla sock tutorial playlist in my queue as I love your knitted socks. Thanks for sharing. • @knottygiraffe
      @knottygiraffe 11 місяців тому

      Hello back from BC :). The Stripe Hype is a lot of fun. If you're a fast knitter and get to the neck before I post my next video, consider yourself warned in advance that the Italian bind off she calls for might not work and you might want to add a life line a few rows before you start the bind off just in case. I had to rip out the entire collar because I couldn't get it over my head. I had to cut the bind off with scissors (the alpaca yarn just wouldn't undo. properly) and then re-do it with Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy bind off.

    • @sandracroley9784
      @sandracroley9784 11 місяців тому

      @knottygiraffe thank you! I rarely bother with any kind of sewn bind-off...I'm happier with others that aren't as fiddly (for me) 😊

    I'm glad to have found your channel today! I enjoy your seeing your various projects and plans. I've also been working through old acrylic stash this year, for afghans, large bulky baskets (holding 3 or 4 strands of assorted colors together) and other scrappy items. My mothers 50 years worth of yarn passed to me, and she never knit with anything but acrylic, so I'm using it up in blankets and throws for non-wool loving friends...😊

      Thanks for your comment. The one thing you can say about acrylic yarn blankets is that you have to love how durable they are. You can toss them into the washer and dryer without worrying. Glad to hear I'm not the only one working through their old stash. I'm curious about the large bulky baskets??? Sounds interesting.

    Hi Glenna! I love the name of your channel. I am currently making a ranunculus and enjoying it very much. I live on the north-eastern St. Lawrence shore of Quebec and we had the fires in June. It was scary and I almost had to evacuate. I can relate to walking my dogs with a mask on. Best wishes from another Canadian podcaster!

    • @knottygiraffe
      @knottygiraffe Рік тому

      Thanks! Good luck with the ranunculus. I found that putting stitch markers in all the way around when I was doing the yoke, separating each pattern repeat helped me SO SO SO much, especially after having to rip it all out again. Not sure what you're knitting yours on, (I will check out your podcast and see!) but with the slippery fingering weight cotton on the big needles, I found it impossible to rip back only part of it and get the right number of stitches back onto the needles and even tinking to be tough with all those twists and increases. I was born in Pointe Claire! So I can easily envision where you might be. Thanks for taking the time to comment and yes, I will definitely check out your podcast! Cheers~

      Mothballs are toxic as well, not good to have in your environment. And who doesn't love the smell of cedar! I've also discovered that lavender works well too so I bought a handful of lavender sashes at the farmer's market and have stuffed them into my drawers.

Tina is one of my favourite podcasters in knitting and her tutorial really does take you step by step - I believe there is a series of 7 videos, from casting on right through to doing the kitchener stitch to close up the toe. She knits hers on 9" circulars but I prefer magic loop. Here is the link to the first video of Tina's: ua-cam.com/video/WSwHiQdpwF8/v-deo.html. If you dont' like hers, the Crazy Sock Lady also has sock knitting tutorials. Good luck with it!
