Sophos Firewall Home Edition V20 - A Free NGFW for your Homelab and a XG135 to run it on
Sophos have offered home use versions of there firewall solutions for years, first with the UTM(SG) range and then with the XG since Sophos launched it. Now V20 has become available for the home licensed users lets get it running on an older XG135 and compare it to a new XGS136 appliance to see how it stacks up
While not for use in production its always been a fully featured product with only a Core and memory limit which generally don't impact its use for most home lab environments, and as far as I'm aware its the only 100% free NGFW available
So join me in loading it up and getting full TLS inspection working to see the impact this has on performance

Rackstuds vs Rackstuds Duo vs /dev/mount - How do you mount yours?
Thought I just heard this! Had to check to make sure I wasn’t going insane 😂
There is no option to remove the router before I add a new router. There are only two options for the existing router. Locate and Restart. Maybe because it is a newer OS. What to do about this?
Just wondering if the XG135 has a dedicated switch chip for the 8 ports?
I don't know how much it matters but rack studs will act as an insulator between your rack and your device casing whereas the devmount is conductive.
HI Jim, thanks for the clear explanation; in my case I am replacing the ISP modem/router with an UXG-Pro but still have to keep the modem/router in pppoe passthrough mode (acting now as just a modem). When I plug the (non-adopted) UXG-pro into the ISP modem's WAN port (with just my laptop in the LAN port) I am able to connect the UXG to the Internet but then (after my successful unifi acct login) it starts searching for a cloud key, so I then plug the LAN port into the main switch where the Cloud Key gen2 lives. At that stage the UXG reports that its LAN port is disabled. I've tried that several times with the same result. Could I be some kind of loop protection? Any other idea?
Sounds a bit odd, have you tried adopting it first with all the correct settings and then swapping the internet connection over, is your ISP router handing out the same IP range that your LAN is using? Feel free to come over to the discord and ask away
Can it do dual or redundant wan's?
Yes load balanced or failover
I really like these but without PPPOE it's a no go for me.
Tempted to dislike but I don't want to screw with the algo
A bit late, gr8 comparison, thought I'd throw up my stats R730xd (LFF) ~ E5-2680 v4* 2 (56 threads), 12* drives 3.5" + 2* 2.5", NICs 3* 0Y40PH + 1* Y36FR Present Reading: 308 Watts (34.22% Capacity) ~ daily use (not at all idle) Present Reading: 490 Watts (54.44% Capacity) ~ Full load this is with 2* 750w..incase anyone was wondering No issues for me with Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM57800 or BCM57810 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet cards installed in either Loonix or Winderps (but must admit not much windows testing at all, drivers auto found & installed & working... only installed windows to do 3DMark..hoping for UNKNOWN Hardware steam achivement) IDRAC 8 is so much nicer than the old JAVA..stuff
Thanks for the video! For anyone reading, I was able to format the SSD by booting Gparted off a USB (using Rufus and formatting as DD) and clearing the existing partition table and formatting the whole SSD as FAT32. After that I booted the Sophos Home Edition off a USB and it let me install no worries
Thanks so much for posting as I'm looking at putting one of these in my house since I really like the features of our corporate firewall. Would you still recommend the xg135 rev 3 currently?
Id imageine this would work with the injector and no honeywell to just power the doorbell? I saw another video on this seems to be a perfict fix for me
We run a few like this
Are you running it like this ? this would be a good solution for me
Just a quick question. Why go for an appliance that costs more than a mini dual ethernet pc?
One reason I'm looking at this option is because of the 8 ports. If I was to use a pc, I'd either have to buy many more nics or an additional managed switch which would be the same cost
I see no issues here
I ordered a Sophos XG 125w today. For 150€. I'm curious to see whether I'll regret the purchase or whether it's perfect for my HomeLab.
I trust Russia more than most, as an American. At least they hold true to themselves.
The dev/mount is actually cheaper than the the studs in rhe Netherlands it seems, the studs duo sell for around €56 and rhe dev/mount are €50 for a 50 pack
Tenda i29 has the possibility to add second SSID using a different vlan of management vlan?
Yeah mine did die today ....haven't jet opened it up. Is it safe to keep it running via USBC?
Thanks so much. This video gave me so much information. Great work 👍.
Where can I buy something like this?
how did you add i29 to cloudfi?
I’ve got a t410 with perc h700. 12tb disks are working just fine.
Who cares about Unify NAS when we have Synology which will shut down when the UPS is running low on juice. While unify DM pro max raid 1 will not and you will lose data what a joke 🤦♂️🤮👎
I had a ticket, but had to bail. Gutted 😢
What time horizon is the EOL? Did they just announce that, or has it been EOS and is now EOL?
It was already in Eos and vintage so no updates except security, now it's no longer updated and may not be supported going forward in new versions
Give me the useless servers if possible
Where do you get power from? I'm thinking of implementing a few of these with cameras and APs on my campsite
Often from caravan hookups
@@JimtheITguyhave you ever had someone “accidentally” unplug it? I’m opening my own campsite and doing a full UniFi setup but the flex utilities will be directly wired into a hook up
@@djgeorgevdg no as they are well looked after by the campsite owners, alot of the time we also just get dedicated spurs off them aswell so they can't be, makes it very easy to pop up and point aswell for more coverage if needed
@@JimtheITguy sounds good
From an otherwise fantastic product line, what an absolute stupid design for something that could have been great. If this is meant for discrete installation having a giant dongle that you can't stick into a wall is a BIG miss (side not, what is the purpose of a screen?). How is this supposed to be mounted in an area where discretion matters?!?!
Finally, I can replace (soon) my dream machine first-gen
interesting update thanks
Basically a camera records ONLY on what NVR its adopted to, so when you want to move it the second NVR it erases all your recording and starts fresh on the other NVR, this makes no SENSE.
Doesn't auto balance, must be down manually.
There appear to be alot of flaws with stacking UNFI NVRs right now.
No need to add a static IP to the second NVR because once it's stacked, it sees it as one component and you cannot get to the 2nd GUI interface if you tried. The other issue is that you also have access running, if you have one of your doorbells linked to a camera on he same NVR and that NVR fails the link will break between the cam and doorbell, and they bot won't failover.
It's a flawed idea so far.
8:51 if you want to skip the verbal diarrhea. You're welcome.
I'm loving it. I'm already using the ecosystem. Now I can afford to buy a stack of them to dot around the outside of my home.
Thanks for the Video - i just performed the Migration from USG3 to Gateway lite. I was working like a charme.
Nice video, well presented. When you did a screen share we could not see any of the details on the admin panel. I think it would be better to be able to see it clearly and test how it looks on a mobile device.
hi, new to the homelab here, thanks for the video, it helps a lot.
Hello. I just got this same server from a recycler. It looks great but has no drives. When i plug in some HP SAS drives from another older server, they are not recognized. You mention that this machine has SAS connectors but it appears you are installing SATA SSD drives. Do those plug into the SAS Connectors? If so, can you send me a link to the drives you are purchasing in the video so I can get something that I know will work on my machine?
nowerdays a 13th gen i5 gets 24k cinebench points. running VMs on E-cores sounds kinda dumb though sadly there aren't any power efficient, affordable cpus that dont rely on E-cores
Just to add in I had to go into the app and change chime to digital to work 😂😂
In one use-case I've deployed this setup to support a remote camera linked to the NVR network by a Unifi Loco M5 pair. Great setup. The only downside to these boxes is no screw to keep the box from being slid off of the mount. I mitigated by custom fabricating using flexible PVC conduit terminating in the bottom of the flex utility, and conduit anchors.
Couldn’t someone just cut that exposed wire?
is possible to have 2 AP and 1 SSID with this device in the same house?
Nice video :) Need to install XG V20 again, I've missed a 135 Rev 3 a few times recently from eBay, so still on a XG 125 Rev3 at the moment. Family member wise, waiting for UK stock of the Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra. I've deployed a Unifi Express to another family member and pretty ok, but not sure I'd get another. XG230 Rev 2 under my desk with 10Gb SFP+ module card installed, but not using it atm. My XG125 Rev 3 has a pfsense + license on it until 2025. One thing that is dead completely now and I don't think many care is Untangle Home
I Love it! I'm buying every one so far I have the cloud gateway ultra, swiss army knife and the 60w switch. deffo going to get the new turret and dome camera
