Sandy Koufax is my all-time favorite sports hero! Sorry, Magic. You got 2nd place. I grew up on Koufax and Drysdale. I didn't really get into baseball until 1961 when I was 7 years old. But when I caught the big, bad, blue, baseball bug, I got it bad. I'm still not over it and don't have plans to be. I lived through all these times and read about most of them in the newspaper. It helped having learned to read that year. 😅 My mom was a huge Brooklyn/LA Dodger fan. She would catch me up on the years I missed, usually over and over again. But, if the subject was the Dodgers, I was all ears. I've read just about everything I could find on Sandy, including his excellent, authorized biography. In '61 we moved to San Jose, CA. We'd make the trip up to Candlestick a few times. I did get to see him pitch at least once, maybe twice. The first time he was facing Juan Marichal. It seems like I might have seen him pitch against Gaylord Perry, but that might've been Claude Osteen in blue. My mom had a story about Sandy and Roy "Campy" Campanella. She said that Campy learned to put a beefsteak inside his glove to protect his hand. Gloves weren't like the ones we have today. According to one article, somebody had calculated Sandy was pitching up to 102 mph while he was still in his wild Brooklyn days. They didn't have radar guns in those days. This was the "Jet Age" and some smart guys figured out a way to time his pitches. I had never seen a pitcher timed after that until the late Fernando Valenzuela. So many memories, most of them cherished. I infected my firstborn with Blue Blood. He's been working on one of his sons, but so far, it's too close to call. After my mom passed in 2005, I had to clean out her room. I couldn't believe all the Dodger paraphernalia (mostly Sandy's) she'd amassed over the decades. I think I may still have some of it - somewhere. 😂 One important point that's been mostly overlooked, I learned from his Bio. The Dodgers signed the first negro baseball players to play pro. Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcomb, and a lot more to follow. Blacks in the MLB were new, and a lot of folks weren't too thrilled with that idea. This left a lot of on-the-road free time for the ballplayers to kill. Except for a couple of White Dodgers, Whites would hang out with Whites, and Blacks hung out with Blacks. But those same White guys mostly would ostracize Sandy, too because he was Jewish. So Sandy and the Black players would often hang out together, often breaking out into a spontaneous basketball game. Lastly, here's some trivia for you. When Sandy was signed, as you mentioned, he went straight to the big leagues. However, the Dodger's roster was already full when he joined them. So, somebody got bumped off the roster to make room for him. Maybe you've heard of him? A guy named Tommy Lasorda! I don't think Tommy ever got back to the bigs until Walt Austin retired. They're both interesting guys, too.
Loved watching him ❤❤❤at 7 years old
If they had Tommy John surgery back then, he could have played several more years.
Koufax a brilliant pitcher and pure class as a human being.
Look at those ERAs.......Sandy Koufax was a gentleman.
God look at this guys numbers. I never seen anything like it..
overrated
Low baseball IQ.
Don’t forget Steve Carlton , one of the greatest lefthanders of all time . LEFTY won I believe four Cy Young awards .
You guys are mentioning a lot of pitchers and Koufax was one of the greatest for a short time , but never overlook the Cardinals great Bob Gibson who could pitch with the best of them .
There were several outstanding pitchers during that time, including Gibby.
6 for 6 stolen bases. Wow. Thanks for highlighting this amazing performance!
Sandy next to Yogi at the HOF. That would have been a hell of a battery.
The cubs “curse” is so dumb and forced. They never even came close they just sucked.. the Red Sox didn’t suck they were actually very good that’s what made the curse narrative more apt in their case. A goat give me a break
I got to see a double header where Sandy threw a one hit shutout in game one and Don Drysdale threw a two hit shut out in game 2. To be honest - I was bored.
Sandy is still one of my top 5 sports heroes of all time!

Thank you!
@ quality video mate,
Correction- nobody was upset Sandy didn't pitch game 1 in 1965 World Series!
He sure meant it when he said he had a lot of years to live after baseball. It’s 2024 and he still goes to the dodger games and he is still so handsome gorgeous
Mattingly was a great player. But his numbers weren’t good enough for the HOF. Probably the best first baseman ever he only had around 64 errors in his career. but I don’t think his Hall of Fame material Dwight Evans one of the greatest right fielder ever, he was one of the best right fielders ever. And what a rifle of an arm he had, his numbers, I thought, were worthy of the hall of fame. And I’m a big Evan’s fan. but I now understand what they’re looking for. However, they did make a big mistake when they let the Jim Rice in. But that’s a story for another day.
Glad to see someone covering guys before 1970 finally. My dad said Koufax was the best pitcher he ever saw and probably of all-time.
I was at a doubleheader in Dodger Stadium with Both Koufax and Drysdale pitching, they won both games, but Cardinal Curt Flood went 7 for 8 against them, the only Cardinal who could hit them that day.
Yes he was, until he ran into the Orioles Jim Palmer and Wally bunker in the 1966 world series.
His body finally gave out. The Dodgers criminally overworked him.
He had a great motion to the plate and follow-through snap.
Hitting a foul ball off Koufax was a moral victory. Koufax and Drysdale were a dominant pair.
NY seems bloated & slow compared to Dodgers. Maybe lay-off the late night pizza? Go Dodgers!!! It was fun watching you guys. 🎉
Can't tell you how much i wanted to see Sandy in person.
Grew up in LA. Koufax was so dominent. I now live in the central coast of Cali. Koufax still lives here. See him once in a while, around town. Still looks healthy and happy.
Go Dodgers champions❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 see thats how its spelled flipping foreigners
Go Yankees champioon❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
You obviously missed last night’s game❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉dodgers win
I was a kid in the late 80s and would watch or listen too or go to every A's game possible. When Eck came out you knew it was lights out game over. Even though he is on the wrong side of a legendary homerun it dont take away his legendary status on the mound back then , i was in awww of those 80s A's. I knew his stats cause as a kid in oakland in those days baseball was everything and i had a baseball stats almanac and would carry it with me everywhere i went. I think eckersleys 1990 year was his best but then he tops that with the legendary 1992 season mvp cy young and a whole lotta nasty. Thank you Eck for the great memories you gave me and all the 40somethings that were living and dying with the A's as kids back then. Oakland and The bay area is proud of you .
Keep these type of videos up absolutely awesome!
Nice and easy to follow. Rodney was one of my favorite relievers. I loved the arrow 🏹
Wow The team with the 400 million payroll Defeated the team with the 90 million payroll Man that's "surprising" And I would have watched it But the ALCS is not on network TV You know Like football The real national pastime That thing is back in 1989 or 90 when the gateway project got passed 52 to 48 had they told the taxpayers the 25% of the public who can't afford cable or satellite or whatever would not get to watch the games on TV the thing would have failed by something like 5 to 1 And nobody's ever going to vote for a new baseball stadium in anywhere except the large markets So my tax dollars go to build the thing and and maintain the thing but I do not get to watch games being played on the thing And you know what Baseball did me a favor I've come to realize that there are a thousand times more important things to You know like my faith in God My recognition that Jesus is the son of God and my faith in him leads to eternal life And how reading the Bible is a smart thing to do So dear baseball Please disregard this letter....
Veo mucho resentimiento y amargura en tu escrito. ¿Todo bien en casa?..
Sorry to correct you but Stanton had 7 RBIs in the series.
Good catch, thank you!

Good video. I found myself dozing off a little, I think you would benefit from a little more confidence in your voice. I could see you going viral with one of these.
