  • Dennis Eckersley was a great starting pitcher, but several injuries led him to a crossroads in his career. Through one genius decision, he suddenly became one of the most dominant closers of all time, entering a club that he’ll forever be the lone member of.

I was a kid in the late 80s and would watch or listen too or go to every A's game possible. When Eck came out you knew it was lights out game over. Even though he is on the wrong side of a legendary homerun it dont take away his legendary status on the mound back then , i was in awww of those 80s A's. I knew his stats cause as a kid in oakland in those days baseball was everything and i had a baseball stats almanac and would carry it with me everywhere i went. I think eckersleys 1990 year was his best but then he tops that with the legendary 1992 season mvp cy young and a whole lotta nasty. Thank you Eck for the great memories you gave me and all the 40somethings that were living and dying with the A's as kids back then. Oakland and The bay area is proud of you .

I had the pleasure of watching several of his saves live during his time at Oakland.. baseball was glorious back then ⚾

As a kid I was on the same flight with him and McGwire on the way to the 1992 All-Star Game and in my #1 most cherished baseball memory managed to get his autograph in the terminal. Absolutely warm, genuine guy. Eck has given half a century of his life to baseball as a player and a commentator, overcoming some personal challenges along the way with great success. He deserves a happy retirement back in California with his grandchildren.

Coined the phrase "Walk off"....and instead of Bases Loaded....."Bases Drunk".... gotta love that from a recovering alcoholic

I started as a closer in the shower 2018 for Detroit. In 2021 I won mvp and the cy young coming from the long relief number 1 spot. Winning 17 striking out 330 in 180. Didn't have the saves for reliever of the year
Couple years later I was the ace starter.
Had no idea someone did something similar in real life 100 wins and 100 saves and the accolades.
Big respect to Eck. I'm a fan

So, even though Eck’s most memorable moments were in Oakland where he won a cy young and a WS ring…his years in Boston were key to him getting to the necessary counting stats to enter into the HOF.
That’s why Eck was a first ballot Hall of Famer, and Lee Smith didn’t get in until the veterans committee voted him him.

The switch from starter to closer was super important in saving his arm!

Great vid. Giants fan here. The 90's A's greatness was hard on me because the Giants fell short or outright stunk. And, what has happened to the A's is sad because it destroys historical continuity. Booooooooo, John Fisher, boooooooo. You suck!
