Paradiddle-Diddle Drum Groove & Fill-in Ideas for Drummers Part 5! (BD Variations)
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s Drums By Liz lesson!
Thank you for all the continued support, subs, comments, likes and shares!!
I truly appreciate what all you fellow drummers and viewers do to help the algorithm push my content onward and upward!!
With your support, I’m hoping to reach over 10K subscribers soon so I can help even more drummers on their musical journey! ✨🙏🏻🌟🥁👍💯❤️
In this week’s Drums By Liz lesson, I demonstrate and explain how to play a Paradiddle-diddle groove and fill. The sticking pattern of RLRRLL helps to create some really nice patterns/combos as we experiment and orchestrate this. Start by getting comfortable with the sticking pattern of the Paradiddle-diddle. Learn the different ways to count this. As you progress, learn to count and feel this all in a Triplet format. Use the sticking pattern to your advantage and incorporate it with other sextuplets you play.
This pattern works in so many different directions and in so many different ways.
It works great as a groove or as a fill-in. Learn to move the orchestrations in such a way as to resolve the pattern. Please try to understand a bigger picture about your music theory and your drumming mindset. All of these things will lead to a more organized sound and more musical play.
After several weeks of hand pattern orchestration and study, it’s now time to ramp up our bass drum patterns and rhythms. These additions can significantly enhance the complexity and beauty of our Paradiddle-diddle concepts. Be patient because many of these are quite difficult coordinations. Remember, many of these patterns involve challenging coordinations, so patience is key. Take it slow, stay methodical, and use counting patterns to build confidence and familiarity with these advanced ideas. The goal is to achieve a smooth, fluid flow and a cohesive sound throughout.
These are technical, rudimental, sophisticated patterns and techniques to elevate your skill level and coordination. I have found it to be an outstanding tool for helping students achieve a high level of excellence.
As you progress as a player, utilize your rudiments and various sticking patterns to help you have a more fluid sound. It helps you play things faster with more artistic expression. It’s always a way to work smarter rather than harder. Many times it leads to very nice orchestrations and will inspire you to find more patterns within the complexity. Don’t be intimidated, just find a way to solve the puzzle for yourself. Everything can be broken down into digestible pieces. Find ways to conquer these harder, more skillful concepts, and watch the heads turn as you incorporate all of this into your playing style. It’s a wonderful thing!
On a very serious side note, please continue to pray, volunteer to help, send donations and support to Western NC Disaster Relief through RedTruckMen.org.
My husband Lance has been stationed now for over 2 months at Black Mountain, NC helping all these wonderful people who have lost absolutely everything. Unbelievable heartbreaking times. These mountain towns and people need so much help and support. Work crews are rebuilding homes and lives in the process. Red Truck Men is there to uplift, feed and help with all of the day to day in and out operations of helping this community somehow still have hope, band together in fellowship and recover.
Please continue your heartfelt prayers!!

Great varied combinations. I look forward to working more on these..!
You, already being a very skilled, creative and accomplished drummer, have been on the fast track with all our studies from day one. Fantastic progress Darron, as usual! We will find even more ways to creatively tweak things for lotsa continued happy drumming!😊🥁⭐️👍
These paradiddle-diddle concepts are great. Thanks. Any chance you could put these all into a playlist to make them easier to locate and study, please? That would be a great help.
I’m glad you are enjoying these concepts Ray! These Paradiddle-diddles have a lot to offer…we’ve been tweaking things for many weeks and may continue the fun for a bit. I did create a playlist. Thank you for the suggestion. I hope it helps you and others! Happy Holiday Drumming!🎄🥁

Good stuff. I use paradiddle diddles quite often. I think Buddy Rich used them a lot, too !
Thank you! As you know, paradiddle-diddles can be used in so many different directions for some really interesting grooves and fills. Expanding the concept opens up many doors to more advanced play. I’m really glad to hear you use them often. And yes Buddy Rich’s talent is still to this day so impressive…incredible skill…rudimental rhythm mastery and blazing speed! Loved those Tonight Show (Johnny Carson) episodes. Always outstanding!🥁🔥⭐️💯

Thank you very much for your super nice comments! The Paradiddle-diddle is so expansive and has so much potential. The sticking pattern leads us to many fun creative possibilities. Next week we will study different BD rhythms against the pattern, creating some variable grooves. It’s been weeks of study with the hand pattern and now it’ll be a few more weeks of study, adding in some footwork. After all is said and done, we should have a vast array of ideas to work with. It’s pretty amazing how expansive one little idea can get! Thanks again chased-penguins and Happy Drumming!😊🥁🐧
I was just commenting to my wife. "See. This is how you make a video. You play a little something and then explain it. If you don't like what you hear, you move on. I've clicked on so many drum videos where there is hardly and playing and 5 minutes in you still don't know why you're watching". Every video I've seen by you in engaging and makes me want to go play my drums. Simple and peppered with examples and enthusiasm. Love it.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments! I’ve made an effort to be mindful of the points you mentioned. It really is important to get straight to the point. Like you, I’ve often found myself skipping through videos that include unnecessary fluff. I also try to be detailed in explaining concepts for viewers who don’t read music, to ensure everyone can follow along and feel confident. At times maybe it’s a little overboard, but it’s a way to give students/viewers some self confidence and to provide reassurance and clarity. Adding music notation for those who do read music is something helpful I want to eventually do. I’m always looking for ways to get students further, faster. I’m super happy to hear the process works for you!! Thanks again for your feedback John! It is much appreciated. Happy Holiday Drumming!😊🥁🙏🏻🎅🎉

There sure is a lot to unpack in this idea, I love it! Happy Holidays to you and your family. I was the only female drummer through jr high and High school, and the only female in welding class in high school so I can relate to your experience. I have always kinda lived outside of the box. LOL

You see what I like about your paradiddle groove here is that is isn't like the standard UA-cam or tik toc paradiddle examples. for one thing, your stick work on the hi hat has an impressive eynamic consistency but also has enough human touch to not nearly border robotic nor automatic sounding. I sense a snare drum rudiment back ground that studied heights but also musical touch. The hi hat 16ths sound great! Then there is your back beat accent. It's strong and groovy. Right in the pocket and right in dynamics. I hear your absolute drumset control in your performance here and your ears are behind your musical adjustments dynamic wise and timing wise. You've a pocket and a feel.. I'm a drummer of years and I know practiced when I hear it. You sound organic and expressive. My honest opinion. You bring new life to an otherwise tired and beaten tik toc drum subject matter. I'd point to your example of proper rudiment application before I would towards others on this platform. You audibly exhibit your musical motives and I can't help but feel you'll agree with my assessment of which. Great performance and lesson and above all example. Keep up the hard work! It's noticed
I am beyond humbled by all your incredible comments Brian! Thank you so very much for all of your kind thoughts and remarks! I always feel very fortunately blessed to do what I do and I absolutely love to see all my students progress exponentially. After all these years and all our diligent practice crafting our skills, we get to a super grateful mindset and presence about our drumming …and life…lol Thank you again for your in-depth observations and blow my mind comments! I am trying my best to create something a bit off the beaten path to help a greater variety of students/drummers. Thank you very much for the inspiration!! Happy Holiday Drumming!😊🥁🙏🏻🎅🇺🇸
Sweet groove, nice bonus ideas as well. I really appreciate your teaching style. When I begin to feel nervous, I state that I am excited, and it lets my brain know that it is OK. I have found that instead of the nervousness continuing or developing into fear, it focuses my mind to see the excitement which helps me genuinely relax and enjoy.
Thank you CJ, I am happy to help! I’m glad you like the concept. I love how you have turned a negative into a positive by shifting your thought process. Like you’ve observed and overcome, anything intricate takes patience, diligence and a can-do attitude. Break things down into logical, digestible, shorter concepts to not become overwhelmed or fearful. Thank you for your insightful comments. I’m sure your openness in what you have observed will help others! Super cool CJ! Happy Drumming & Happy Thanksgiving!😊🥁🦃🙏🏻🇺🇸🎉
@@DrumsByLiz Thank you.
Your left hand index finger floating is blowing my mind. I was doing that earler today but I know it needs to be Closed to guide the stick on the doubles and downstrokes great video tho. i like the fill ideas. does anyone actually use Paradiddle fills in jam session and stuff.?
Yes, I play a heavier thumb control due to some nasty arthritis in my left index finger. It hurts to grip sticks too tightly. I have issues in a few other knuckles…not good. I’m sure it’s from 50+years of some pretty intense drumming. I also tend to not hold my left hand as vertical as it should be… Due to a neck injury. I find myself resting my left arm on my left leg so my neck doesn’t hurt. At 62 years old these things start to appear I guess? So I compensate. And you are so right. It’s very important to have proper technique to utilize all fingers for 100% control. Every finger has importance. I show students how to isolate fingers and stretch fingers, wrists, forearms, arms etc. We play a physical instrument and it’s important to address these things so we have endurance and longevity. Proper technique is so important and makes a huge difference. Paradiddles, Double Paradiddles, Paradiddle-diddles are all very popular rudiments that are used often in many different directions. As grooves as fills etc. As you progress, you will see how these sticking patterns are a shortcut to more fluid play. They also lead to some really nice flowing orchestrations. We want to always “work smarter rather than harder” so we use these sticking patterns/rudiments to escalate our level of play. All leading to lotsa “Happy Drumming!” I am currently working on expanding this idea and showing more fill-ins. I’m hoping to put these additional lessons out very soon, if not later this week. This drumming thing is never ending it seems… lol🤣✨ Thank you for your insightful comments Michael and Happy Thanksgiving!😊🥁🦃🙏🏻🇺🇸⭐️
Reminds me of my art teacher in middle school 45 years ago.
Drumming as an art form perhaps?… I could’ve fit that bill cuz I’m ancient..early 80’s days..memory lane, a great decade for Happy Drumming! Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!😊🥁🦃🙏🏻🇺🇸⭐️

You’re very welcome! It’s always great to expand upon our Rudimental work. Let’s always think outside the box and look for new ways to approach old ideas. Please stay tuned… I will expand on this soon for more insight, options and drumming fun! 😊🥁⭐️🎉
Also awesome for counting that pesky sixteenth note triplets
Yes, it’s so important to get the mental prep going. Counting is key 100% of the time. Thanks for commenting and Happy Drumming!😊🥁
Working with your ParaDiddle Diddle concept(s) has given me much more balance between left and right. However, this is not only from working the examples you have written, it's the understanding that you provide as well. Your teachings provide the bridge between the mind, and body, and the understanding usually comes later! Now that's wisdom.!! Your playing is for sure on an upper level, and so is your teaching. You could do various books on your concepts. Thank you for taking the time to share. Working with you has enhanced my playing forever. !!!😃
Thank you so much Darron! You’re a huge inspiration to me! Everything I share with you, you fully embrace and take to the next level. I love how we’re able to explore these intricate concepts in depth and stay on such a fast track of learning together. I think it’s very special how we truly connect in this intuitive way. Your natural creativity often leads to new ideas and insights which makes the process even more rewarding. I deeply appreciate all your kind words. It makes me so happy to know my explanations help you grow, feel more balanced and see things from a deeper perspective. Thank you again Darron! It’s always a pleasure brainstorming infinite ideas together for endless Happy Drumming!😊🥁⭐️💯👍🎉
