I started towing when I was 19 years old, I enjoyed calling myself a tow man for over 26 years.
During that time I learned so much, also shared that knowledge with many new to the industry.
After my departure from towing I had chosen a path driving tractor trailer with a major organization. I spent 8 1/2 years in that position.
Currently I am a driving safety instructor for that organization.
Like so many of you I have struggled when my equipment didn't work.
I also watched many hours of UA-cam videos, then started working on my own equipment. Then began working on equipment for others.
As you watch my early videos, those were learning experiences as I made those videos.
I hope you enjoy the videos.
DON'T EVER GIVE UP

Thank you! I have a question, is it possible to disassemble the carburetor and clean it instead of replacing it with a new one?
@@zhengyunli800 you could try, however I like I mentioned the rebuild kit costs more than a new OEM carburetor.
white lithium wd40 works better. i tried regular wd40 before and it just jammed up on me.
@@jd83241 you could survey 100 people, you would have multiple different preferences as to what each prefers. I recommend using what works best for you. Thanks for stopping by and watching the video.
Good, clear directions. Thank you!
@@AllenBlackwood you're welcome, I truly appreciate when someone takes time out of their busy schedule to leave me a kind message of appreciation.
The new carburetor has an extra screw on the side. At 5:25 you can see the screw on the right of new carb, but not on the old.
Only screw I see is idle adjustment, which I see on both.
Please next video say "da bears"
Please explain
Why are small engine carburetors having problems - is it the ethanol? I don't remember so many failing years ago
Yes majority of carburetor repairs I do have to do with ethanol. Regular unleaded didn't cause these problems. I used non-ethanol gas and never have issues with my own equipment. Cost roughly dollar more per gallon though.
Great job - you helped me tremendously (I'm another old guy over 60) I liked that you explained & showed everything clearly. BTW you are 27 1/2 twice - it sounds better
Glad it was of help. As for the age, I wear 55 better.
I just purchased the exact mower used and it hardly could move so I purchased a new Toro belt for it. This video had great step by step directions and illustrated just where everything is. I ran into the additional fun of having one of the motor mount bolts snapping g off (it is a 12 year old machine that appears to have spent some time out in the weather) After drilling that out, everything else went smoothly. One additional point is that the travel cable may need some adjustment where it bolts to the handle with the additional traction of a new drive belt
I have not had the fun of a broken engine bolt, lot's of left side engine mount bolts working loose. They sound like a noisy engine upon start up. Thanks for mentioning cable adjustment, will have to make a video on this. Appreciate your stopping by and long comment.
I don’t understand why you took the wheels off
Easier to remove bolts holding underside cover into place.
Great video. I had trouble, however. I'm confident I did everything correctly... but I had fuel flooding the carburetor, filling th little cup behind the air filter, etc... which I stopped quickly with the vice grips. I mopped it up, etc. Now I'm stuck on what to do/try next.
Fixed it. I watched "Small Engine Guys" video titled " toro recycler smart stow carburetor repair. briggs and stratton 7.25 163 cc carb clean"... around the 9:25 mark, they talk about the float... and mine got all screwy while I was fiddling with the other stuff. I reseated it with the little needle pin in it's right spot and BINGO! Runnin' like a top. Thanks again.
If it's got gas running like that, the needle isn't seating properly. Check to make sure float and needle is not sticking. Verify rubber tip on needle isn't damaged.
Excellent presentation
Thank you for your kind words
I tipped my lawnmower the wrong way amd your video just saved me.
Glad to hear that
1:10 - instead of taking off the rear drive wheels...raise them to the highest setting, then remove one of the bolts (to the plastic rear baffle/bagger assembly)...then lower the wheels to the lowest setting, to finally remove the last screw to the rear plastic baffle. It was UA-camrs like you that empowered me to fix rather than replace my 22 inch Toro Recycler. Just paying it forward thanks for sharing and what you do!
Thanks for information, I personally find it easier to remove wheels so you could remove any debris and inspect gears.
Thanks for a great video. I have the same engine with the same exact problem. Problem solved.
The 10mm bolts that fasten the bracket, that holds the adjustment cable to the deck (4:22), do you know their length? I'm missing one and have to replace it. Also, if I turn the deck over to clean the underside, will the belt remain in place, or will it fall off? Thanks.
Sorry I do not know the length. As for belt, I do not know as it's been a while since I worked on it.
Good video!
Thank you! Exactly what I needed to get my l100 torn down😊
Glad it was of help. Thanks for watching.
OMG taking so much tuff off to change the belt. Hurts to watch. I've changed many many drive belts and never taken so much apart...
Good video. Thank you so much. Very detailed. Which is what I needed.
great video, i just did this job on my neighbors Toro Personal Pace..she got half way done cutting her lawn and the belt came off the pulley near the transmission..i noticed when you were done with this job, the belt seemed to have some tension on it, hers seemed to be fairly loose and have a bit too much slack..not sure if that's what caused it too come off the pulley or not? any ideas? i took it apart and put the belt back on but i'm not confident it will stay on once she starts cutting the lawn again?
Try adjusting the cable. Spring on cable keeps some tension on it.
@@LazyGrandpasGarage hmmm, i've tried adjusting the cable but the slightest amount of tension causes the self propel to stay engaged? i'm wondering if the spring is worn? or possibly another issue?
It won’t start because the carburetor is in your hand? 🙃 (kidding)
Shhhh, don't tell anyone or the secret will be out.
its clean from the inside!
Sparkling clean now
I lost all my interest watching the way you disconnected the tool in the first minute.
Thank you, very helpful. Can you show us how to remove the cover please?
Which cover you asking about?
@@LazyGrandpasGarage The red one - on top of the machine

I’m so sorry to hear you lost a grandchild.

FUCK PLASTIC CARBS!!! But god bless you, thanks for the video. I fixed mine but next time the plastic carb is going in the bin.
Nice thing about plastic carburetors is they don't require paper gaskets. Also much easier to clean.
Thanks!
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Bought a set of four metering blocks on Amazon for eight bucks swapped out in about 10 minutes. You don’t need to take the carburetor off if you have nimble fingers just the four screws and the two bottom screws for the ball and yank out your metering block and swap it out.
I am actually waiting on new ones to come, I am planning on doing a video on that. If I can get caught up on other work first
We highly recommend him
Fantastic job. You are very good . Thank you.
Thank you, your kind words are appreciated.
Is your ultrasonic cleaner the 3Liter size?
Yes it is. Very satisfied with that investment. Sometimes I wonder if I should have got larger, but most carburetors it's sufficient.
Thanks so much! Didn't have to stumble through the figurin' it out phase. BTW 3/8" socket fit a bit better on the cover screws (than 10mm)
Thanks for stopping by and watching the video. Glad it helped you. Thanks for the heads up on 3/8" .
Easy video to help a diy guy out
Thanks, I try to be helpful.
Got the same OEM B&S carb 3 days ago. Changed it out as per your video. One pull, one start. Cut great for an hour then I called it a night. Got a break in the rain today so went to mow some more. It was hard to start, had to use some ether. Got it started, engine smoothed out in about 30 seconds. Cut for about a half an hour then backfired and died. Let it cool down. Checked oil and gas. Won't start at all now not even with the ether. It doesn't even sputter. Just nothing. Any ideas would be super helpful. Thanks!!
Pull the plastic cover off the engine, check if chock is closed or stuck open. Sometimes chock lever on top of carburetor rubs against metal plate on left side. If so, bend the plate slightly so it clears. Also I had a couple where choke spring fell off after using, verify the spring is in place. Verify valves are set properly.
Great video, very helpful. Thanks!
You're welcome , thank you for stopping by and the kind comment.
the spring you remove at 3:15 ..... does the opposing hook on the gas tank side supposed to hook back to anything? Thanks
I totally missed that, thanks for noticing. Yes it hooks to the governor also. I better wobble to my neighbors and fix it

Hi from Kentucky talking about age I’m 69
First time I was in Kentucky I fell in love with the state. While I was towing, I was sent to Chattanooga TN. I couldn't believe how beautiful Kentucky is. That was in 1999 or 2000. 69? That's still young yet old enough to have plenty of wisdom. Thank you for stopping by and commenting, have a great day.
Put some rubber feet on bottom
Feet will only help it walk away.
Briggs must have the market with those carbs. I would bet there are 10's of millions of them on the market. I watched your video on changing them. I was able to change mine out with no problem. It was really was after watching your video. Not much to it at all. Paid 17 bucks for it on Amazon. It was even a n official Briggs. Thanks for the help!!
Briggs is only on using that design. Yeah they are cheap and easy to replace. Thanks for watching and commenting as I appreciate your feedback.
Can you help me with mine. Have the exact splitter brand new and takes 10-15 pulls to start.
If you're in Minnesota I may be helpful.
That's a 6.25 lb-ft motor not 6.25 hp. I have the same one but 5.5 lb-ft and it makes 3.2HP. They hide that number. That one is 3.5 hp. High torque models advertise the lb-ft to let you know they are fixed at low RPM to save on gas. But if they get into tall grass they stall easier. But they use almost nothing in gas. Old ones advertise HP as the power at top RPM gives a good cut but as it goes into tall grass it falls into its torque band and doesn't stall.
Oop's, yup I did say horse. Thanks for heads up.
I've got a Toro Recycler that has a similar Briggs engine. I tweaked the governor shaft lever and stiffened the spring to make it rev higher. It now doesn't struggle in tall or thick grass.. The RPM is higher thus it revs higher when needed. I also added a fuel cut off valve. You have to add a longer fuel line to do that though. When I'm through cutting grass, I turn off the fuel and let it run till it runs the fuel out of the carburetor. That eliminates the fuel messing up the carb.
@@rutbuster1 Careful, if you rev up too high will cause internal damage. 3200-3600 RPM is more than plenty.

This is a fantastic video. I spent the whole weekend looking for videos on this topic and this was perfect. My mower started right up after following these instructions. Thanks so much.
You're very welcome, glad it was of help.
Removed spark plug but still can’t pull rope
Pulled the spark plug but I still can’t pull the cord
Next step would be pull the recoil off the engine, make sure recoil isn't bound up. See if engine spins by hand.
I should mention, I had one that a small piece of wood fell down into the coupling cage and became wedged. That caused issue of not being able to spin engine.
Nice to see you soder instead of crimp connectors
I've nothing but bad luck with cheap connectors.
