I flew on Summit Air Let L-410 from Pokhara to Jomsom to discover what makes this flight one of the most challenging in the world. The flight took just 20 minutes at 10,500 feet and flew through a narrow valley passage around two 8,000m mountains (Annapurna and Dhaulagiri) en route. The video highlights flying in Nepal’s rugged and challenging Himalayan terrain.
Jomsom lies on the arid north side of the Himalaya and has operations only in the mornings because of high winds and cloud build-up during the course of the day. The route has seen many fatal accidents, and nearly all due to controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) during bad weather. The elevation of Jomsom Airport is 8,976 feet (2,736m) above sea level.
The weather was excellent in the dry season but soon the wind picked up and flight operations between Pokhara and Jomsom were temporarily halted. I managed to explore Jomsom and finally took the last flight back to Pokhara. It was a beautiful mountain flight with the wings flying close to the high mountain terrain.

Great video as always Sam. I was only in Pokhara a few weeks ago for commissioning of the VOR for the new Pokhara International Airport. The new terminal is a huge upgrade for Nepal which will allow international travel direct to Pokhara.

  •  Рік тому +35

Sam - nowhere in the video you mention that this sturdy aircraft (most of it's siblings are still flying in the republics of former USSR, including Siberia) is made by golden hands of plane builders here in Moravia, Eastern part of Czechia: In the town of Kunovice where the factory is located for the past 60 years there is also fantastic airplane museum - maybe you should pay it a visit! But your video is out of this world! In my younger days I've flown Twin Otter in west Nepal out of Nepalganj - then western hub of RNAC (Royal Nepal Airline Corp. of bygone days...) - and still remember the towering mountais flying in the valleys south of Dhaulagiri towards Dhorpatan... Nowhere in the world you fly at 18,000 feet and still have mountains above you on both sides!!!

Pokhara is about to open their new bigger regional international airport from this January 2023 which will be able to land airbus a320 like aircrafts so therefore this old small domestic airport which can land only aircrafts like ATR72 , is going to be closed . People from India and near by countries can directly fly to pokhara when the airport opens.
UPDATE : it seems the international flight is not going to happen as India keeps refusing to give permission to Nepali airlines companies from flying direct to some cities of India from these new airports. Earlier also they refused to give air route permission to Nepal ariines and other international carriers to fly and land from Gautam Buddha international airport to other countries because it has to fly above indian aerospace. It seems this is also one of the strategy to not allow your neighbour to develop because instead of helping, they keep creating difficulties for Nepal

Another gem Sam after the Lukla flight and helicopter to Everest BC! 😍 I flew from Jomsom to Pokhara in 2018 after doing the Annapurna trek, this video brings lot of amazing memories. It is cool how plane doesn't have to gain any altitude after takeoff from Jomsom, it's downhill all the way to Pokhara 😄 and it is crazy when you think that you are flying in a plane and Annapurna and Dhaulagiri are still over 5 kilometres about you, stunning flight and scenery 🙆‍♂️

So this was absolutely special and fantastic and I guess only possible in Nepal.
I also flew in and out of Lukla in 9N-AET. The Plane that crashed shortly after.
The highlight for me was to stand on the Runway at Syangboche, surrounded by Yaks...

In 1993..there was no tarmac in pokhara..I was a kid then..flew in from Kathmandu in Necon Air Avro/HS 748 or and we landed in a grass runway..and funny thing was there was a level crossing across the runway for people to cross the runway with a loud siren indicating the arrival or departure of a aircraft..the landing was very bumpy in the grass..we flew back to Kathmandu in Royal Nepal airlines Avro HS 748..stayed in the Fish Tail Lodge..🙂 Also we flew in from Kolkata and back in RNA's Boeing 727..wonderful experience..entering from the rear..my only flight in a 727..as india never had 727s..we had 737-200s and Airbus 300 run by Indian airlines..and Avros and Dornier 228s run by Vayudoot at that time..the Fokker friendships were already been retired by then..anyway..love you channel..much love..🙏🙏🙏👍

I had seen soo many things there in Nepal in 1993 for the first time in my life which was not there in India..the foreign made cars, the trolley buses in Kathmandu, casino in Yak and Yeti hotel..and also being a lover of aviation the various types of small turbo prop planes operating there as at that time only Tribhuban Airport in Katmandu was only paved. And Finally Indians love people from Nepal and why do u think there is so many Nepalis calling India home and vise versa. We have historical ties from ancient times. Brilliant flight operations- short turnaround time. The take-off and landings are hair raising because of the difficult terrain as also the high altitude with low atmospheric pressure and high winds . It requires nerves of steel as they say to fly an aircraft in such conditions- hats off to the crew . Thanks Sam .
