Nice video. Took me ages to find that diagram with the cup washers when I overhauled my shifters as well. Thank the lord some people upload this stuff, huh?
@@dennymurphy8758 I didnt even know you could select between indexed and friction... The bike is an older Legnano with a Tiagra RD. I figured on using an older RD and thought That I would need to swap the shifters.. even though I will its nice to know these can be used as friction shifters as I dont have any bikes with indexed RDs.
I don't think the chainring side has indexing so no need for ball bearings on that side. That way you can use it for a double or a triple. The shifters that I'm rebuilding only indexes on the rear shift.
That is correct. The chainring side is friction. Should have made the clearer in video. The index shifter was the one that was giving trouble when I was rebuilding .
I have a question. I have a Nishiki Altron 7000 with this groupset. The chain is very worn. I am worried that changing the chain will screw up the shifting because I imagine that chain is kinda weird. What are you doing about replacing a chain?
When I replaced the chain I did not know the length so I went on the web and found a site that would tell me how many links the chain needed. It seemed to work well and I believe the chain length is correct. Hope it helps. www.bergfreunde.eu/chain-length-calculator/
Justin Coulter I bought a KMC X10 chain for the black lightning off of eBay. Just removed the links I did not need. As long as it is compatible for component and speed any chain would work. My regular road bike is all shimano components so I would buy a shimano chain in that case. Hope this helps.

Thanks..i just bought an old bike with these shifters and this video will definitely help.
To be honest just to help one cyclist restore an old bike makes it worth it.

Thanks Denny. I will keep this in mind for my sprint service.
Thank you!!! So helpful
Not a problem, just wanted to help those that like working on old bikes.

Same my front shifter is friction only for my SunTour Sprint 9000.

Thanks so much
Any time
The "mounting bosses", are they welded onto the frame or are they also possible to remove?
I am pretty sure they are welded. I have never removed one from a frame.
Alright, thank you! @@dennymurphy8758

Denny Murphy Did you just use a standard Shimano chain? I could maybe use a 6 speed Shimano chain?

Amazing video, thank you so much. It's so satisfying to get that click!
Glad to help! It was so great for me to get the click also. Bike is a lot of fun to ride.
